Water level data (15-min frequency) from 18 instrumented playas in the Jornada Basin, southern New Mexico, USA, from 2016-2022
This dataset contains water level data collected at 18 playas starting in June 2016 for a long-term study of playa inundation at the Jornada Basin LTER site in southern New Mexico, U.S.A. Playas are located throughout the Jornada Basin and are instrumented with dataloggers and attached pressure transducers located at the lowest point of each playa. Instantaneous measurements of surface water level are made every 15 minutes. Data are processed to flag errors and identify periods of playa inundation (floods). This is an ongoing study and the dataset will be updated yearly.
Stable isotope (δ¹⁸O and δ²H) measurements of water column and benthic samples from Lake Joyce, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, November 2014
Water column and benthic samples were collected from Lake Joyce, a perennially ice-covered lake in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, to support stable isotope analyses. Water column samples were collected in November 2014 at depths ranging from 6 to 53 m using a Niskin bottle deployed through a borehole in the lake ice. The deepest sample (53 m) was collected with concurrent live-drop camera observations to ensure that sampling did not disrupt the underlying sediments. Benthic water samples were collected by divers along the delta front on the north side of the lake, targeting topographic low points at depths between 10 and 28.2 m to assess potential pooling of hyporheic discharge. These samples were taken within ~5 cm of the sediment-water interface using 60 mL syringes. This data package includes stable water isotope measurements (δ¹⁸O and δ²H) to support investigations of spatial variability in lake water isotopic composition and potential hydrologic inputs.
MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Water Column microbial community data in lagoons of Moorea, French Polynesia
Microbes process a significant fraction of organic material in marine systems, and the composition and activity of their communities are strongly modulated by fluctuations in nutrient availability. To investigate the distribution and dynamics of microbial communities in tropical lagoon ecosystems, bacteria and archaea were quantified from water column samples collected in lagoons around Moorea, French Polynesia during May 2021, April 2022, and April 2023 using eDNA sequencing. Environmental DNA was extracted and sequenced to assess microbial community composition, with data processed using the QIIME 2 platform (version 2023.7). Microbial communities in fringing reef habitats differed from those in mid-lagoon and back reef sites. These differences in microbial communities were related to patterns of water column nutrients and fluorescent dissolved organic matter, providing a baseline for understanding how lagoon microbial communities respond to spatial and temporal variability in reef environments.
Como and Phalen lake ChatBot water quality and recreation text survey, 2022 and 2023
We collected data from visitors to two urban lakes in Saint Paul, Minnesota, using a conversational chatbot to assess visitor perception of current lake water quality, trends in water quality over time, and other questions relevant to park managers. Data were collected at Como Lake in 2022 and 2023, and at Lake Phalen in 2023. Signs were installed at three locations around each lake with high pedestrian traffic. Each sign had a hook question (“How many watercraft are on the lake right now? Text the number to XXX-XXX-XXXX”). Visitors who responded to this question initiated a series of optional follow-up questions, using a conversational chatbot run by software that automates the sending and receiving of text messages. Survey questions included asking respondents about their primary purpose for visiting the lake today, how often they have visited the lake in the past 12 months, and whether they perceive that water quality in the lake is improving, getting worse, or remaining about the same. Respondents were asked to provide their ZIP code, used to estimate distance traveled to the lake. Respondents also had the opportunity to opt-in to future data collection via phone or text. An AI language model was then used to process the information and parse and synthesize responses. Unique anonymous identifiers were used to key survey response data.
Abundance, biovolume, and biomass of Synechococcus, eukaryote pico- and nano- phytoplankton, and heterotrophic bacteria from flow cytometry for water column bottle samples on NES-LTER Transect cruises, ongoing since 2018
These data represent the abundance, biovolume, and biomass of prokaryotic phytoplankton, eukaryotic pico- and nano- phytoplankton, and heterotrophic bacteria from discrete flow cytometry samples collected during the Northeast U.S. Shelf Long-Term Ecological Research (NES-LTER) Transect cruises, ongoing since 2018. Samples were collected and preserved from the water column at multiple depths using Niskin bottles on a CTD rosette system along the NES-LTER transect, and analyzed post cruise. Cells were identified and enumerated from the flow cytometry data files based on their scattering, SYBR (525 nm), phycoerythrin (575 nm) and chlorophyll (680 nm) fluorescence signals. Gating was completed manually in the Attune NXT software interface.
Dissolved inorganic nutrients from NES-LTER Transect cruises, including 4 macro-nutrients from water column bottle samples, ongoing since 2017
Dissolved inorganic nutrients are measured from water column bottle samples taken on NES-LTER Transect cruises (ongoing since 2017) and include nitrate + nitrite, ammonium, silicate, and phosphate. Sampling frequency is approximately seasonal. Samples were filtered, frozen, then processed at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution's Nutrient Analytical Facility. Each sample may have up to 2 replicates, indicated by a or b in the data table. These macro-nutrients are analyzed in seawater using a colorimetric assay in which light absorbance is measured versus known standards, and final concentrations are calculated in micromole per liter. Some of the data are from cruises in collaboration with the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI).
Size-fractionated chlorophyll from water column bottle samples collected during NES-LTER Transect cruises, ongoing since 2017.
Size-fractionated chlorophyll a and phaeopigments are measured from discrete bottle samples collected during CTD-rosette casts on Northeast U.S. Shelf Long-Term Ecological Research (NES-LTER) Transect cruises (ongoing since 2017), as a proxy for phytoplankton biomass. Sampling frequency is approximately seasonal. Samples were processed by three lab groups using different methods. Size fractions in addition to whole seawater (>0.7 micron) include >5 , <10, >10, and >20 microns with some samples pre-filtered <200 microns. Pigments were analyzed using fluorometers in which fluorescence was measured versus a blank and a standard, and final concentrations were calculated in micrograms per liter (or mg per cubic meter). Some of the data are from cruises in collaboration with the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI).
Globally distributed lake surface water temperatures collected in situ and by satellites; 1985-2009
Global environmental change has influenced lake surface temperatures, a key driver of ecosystem structure and function. Recent studies have suggested significant warming of water temperatures in individual lakes across many different regions around the world. However, the spatial and temporal coherence associated with the magnitude of these trends remains unclear. Thus, a global dataset of water temperature is required to understand and synthesize global, long-term trends in surface water temperatures of inland bodies of water. We assembled a database of summer lake surface temperatures for 291 lakes collected in situ and/or by satellites for the period 1985-2009. In addition, corresponding climatic drivers (air temperatures, solar radiation, and cloud cover) and geomorphometric characteristics (latitude, longitude, elevation, lake surface area, maximum depth, mean depth, and volume) that influence lake surface temperatures were compiled for each lake. This unique dataset offers an invaluable baseline perspective on global-scale lake thermal conditions as environmental change continues. Saint Louis River Estuary Water Chemistry, Wisconsin, Minnesota, USA 2012 - 2013
These data pertain to water and sediments collected from the Saint Louis River Estuary (SLRE) and its nearby water sources by Luke Loken and collaborators for his Masters thesis and additional publications. In brief, we sampled SLRE surface waters and sediments for a variety of physical, chemical, and biological attributes. Ten estuary stations were sampled approximately monthly from April 2012 through September 2013. On four of the sampling campaigns, water was collected from an additional 20 sites. Sites were selected to represent a gradient from the Saint Louis River to Lake Superior and included several tributaries that drain directly into the estuary. This design aimed to understand the spatial and temporal mixing pattern of the estuary as it receives water from several rivers, 2 waste water treatment plant, and Lake Superior. We sampled the estuary to assess the magnitude and timing of source water contributions to the estuary and establish a baseline of chemical and physical measurements to aid in future limnological research. Additionally, we performed nitrogen and carbon cycling rate experiments to determine the estuary-wide influence on nitrate, ammonium, and dissolved organic carbon. This included 8 sediment denitrification, 1 nitrification, and 2 breakdown dissolved organic carbon (BDOD) surveys. This work was funded by the Minnesota and Wisconsin Sea Grant and in coordination with the establishment of the Lake Superior National Estuary Research Reserve (LSNERR).
CLA Yahara Lakes Citizen Offshore Water Quality Monitoring 2016 - 2017
In 2013, Clean Lakes Alliance (CLA) launched a Citizen Water Quality Monitoring pilot. Objectives included evaluating and tracking nearshore water quality conditions on all five Yahara lakes: Lakes Mendota, Monona, Waubesa, Kegonsa and Wingra. In 2016, in order to fully understand the interaction between the offshore and nearshore environment, CLA volunteers will begin sampling the deepest point (deep hole) of all Yahara lakes. The offshore monitoring program will focus on two components: water clarity sampling and dissolved oxygen and temperature measurement. Data from the offshore monitoring program will be compared to data from the nearshore program.
Lake Mendota water temperature secchi depth snow depth ice thickness and meterological conditions 1894 - 2007
Data for water temperature at different depth and different frequencies assembled from various sources by Dale Roberson. A table with additional parameters collected at the same time is also provided for dates when available. These parameters are weather observations, secchi depth, snow and ice depths.
Chloride Concentrations, Conductivity, and Water Temperature Data from Upper Yahara River Watershed Tributaries in Dane County, WI: December 2019 – April 2021
Conductivity and chloride were measured for 2 years in nine tributaries of Lake Mendota and Lake Monona in Dane County, WI. HOBO Conductivity loggers continuously measured absolute conductivity and water temperature every 30 minutes. Breaks in data collection were due to a calibration period or if the loggers were out of the water. Grab samples for chloride concentration occurred weekly or biweekly. Conductivity and water temperature were measured with a field meter at each sampling excursion. This data was needed for a master’s research thesis with the goal of characterizing the spatial distribution and loading of chloride in the Upper Yahara River Watershed.

PIE LTER Year 2022 15-minute interval water quality measurements of water column temperature, salinity, oxygen, pH, and depth at four sites in the Plum Island Estuary.
Four YSI EXO2 water quality sondes were deployed from June 2022 to October 2022 at four sites in the Plum Island Estuary. One was at the mouth of the sound at the Ipswich Bay Yacht Club, one in the Rowley River, and two in the Parker River. The sondes measured water column temperature, salinity, oxygen, pH, and depth in 15-minute intervals.

Dissolved Organic Carbon Concentration, Dissolved Organic Matter Optical Properties, and Water Quality Indicators in the Plum Island Estuary (PIE), Massachusetts, USA (2018-2023)
This is a data set of paired in situ measurements of water quality parameters, total suspended solids concentration, and concentration and optical properties (absorption coefficient spectra and fluorescence indices) of dissolved organic matter (DOM) collected between 2018 and 2023 in the Plum Island Estuary and nearshore waters. In situ water quality measurements (salinity, temperature, optical dissolved oxygen saturation, turbidity, and dissolved organic matter fluorescence) were collected with a water quality sonde from the surface (top 1 m of water column), along with corresponding samples that were processed and analyzed in the lab for dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration, chromophoric DOM (CDOM), absorption coefficient spectra, DOM excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence, and total suspended sediment (TSS) concentration. The data were used in multiple studies (see manuscripts listed below) focusing on the dynamics of DOC and CDOM in the Plum Island Estuary.
SBC LTER: Ocean: Ocean Currents and Biogeochemistry: Nearshore water profiles (monthly CTD and chemistry), ongoing since 2000
This data package contains water chemistry measurements taken monthly at these reefs in the nearshore areas of the Santa Barbra Channel, CA, USA: Arroyo Quemado, Bullito, Naples, Arroyo Burro, Mohawk and Carpinteria. Measurements include standard CTD parameters, nutrients, pigments, particulate CN, total dissolved N and P, stable isotopes of C and N (not all parameters are measured at all stations). Sampling began in November 2000. Some stations are sampled only occasionally. During the first 2 years, CTD data were collected with a SBE19 Seacat Profiler and water samples with a pump. Starting in February 2003, a SBE19-Plus with a rosette sampler was used. There are 3 tables in this dataset. Water chemistry and profiles from "registered stations" (see geographic coverage) are in 2 tables with "registered" in their name. CTD profiles are often collected ad hoc, or as "stations of opportunity". These have been collected in a third table as "non-registered". The station codes for these may be reused, and are not recorded in metadata (but can be found in data).
