Changes in arthropod community but not plant quality benefit a specialist herbivore on plants under reduced water availability

<p>Plants growing under reduced water availability can affect insect herbivores differently, in some instances benefitting them. However, the forces mediating these positive impacts remain mostly unclear. To identify how water availability impacts plant quality and multitrophic interactions, we conducted manipulative field studies with two populations of the specialist herbivore <i>Pieris rapae</i>, and its host plant, <i>Rorippa indica</i>. We found that <i>P. rapae </i>larvae experienced higher survival on <i>R. indica</i> growing under low water availability compared with plants grown under high water availability. Higher survival of eggs and larvae was related to the reduced abundance of other herbivores and natural enemies. Water availability had differential impacts on other members of the herbivore community by altering plant quality. Low water availability decreased the quality of <i>R. indica</i> to most herbivores, as indicated by reduced abundance in the field and decreased relative growth rate in laboratory feeding assays. In contrast, <i>P. rapae </i>larval performance was not affected by sympatric <i>R. indica </i>grown under different water availability. These results indicate that local <i>P. rapae</i> populations possess physiological adaptations to overcome fluctuations in host quality. Our findings illustrate that reduced water availability is beneficial to a specialist herbivore but detrimental to most other herbivores. Our work highlights the complex effects of the arthropod communities associated with plants in determining the impacts of water availability on insect herbivores.</p>

Water quality data sets of the Gozyo catchment and the four U.S. watersheds

<p>This zipped file contains three excel files. Table GZ_Solute.xls and Table GZ_Tb.xls are high-frequency water quality data in the stream&nbsp;of the small forested catchment, Gozyo cattchment (12.14ha), Nara, Japan. The high-frequency on-site Water quality (WQ) measurements of K, Cl, and Na in the stream using flow-injection potentiometry method with 15-minute interval were interpolated to 10-minute interval data. The SS concentration in the stream was estimated by linear transformation from the observed 10-minute turbidity value. Table GZ_Solute.xls gives observed 10-minute solutes data with discharge, rainfall, and temperature from 2009 to 2011, and Table GZ_Tb.xls provides the observed 10-minute turbidity data from 2012 to 2014. SS value (mg/l) is calculated as 1.09 Turbidity + 6.19. The data value of -999 means missing observation.</p> <p>Tables US_daily_WQ_datasets.xls contains daily water quality (WQ) and discharge data from the four watersheds in the United States. The data value of -999 also means missing observation. The names (USGS station numbers) of four WQ monitoring sites are Muskingum River (03150000), Rock Creek (04197170), Skunk River (05474000), and Vermilion River (04195000). Daily WQ data were composed by following the procedure described in the Appendix S1 in Hirsch (2014). The WQ data for Muskingum, Rock, and Vermilion river were retrieved from Heidelberg University&#39;s National Center for Water Quality Research site (https://ncwqr.org/monitoring/data) and suspended sediment discharge data were downloaded from the USGS National Water Information System (<a href="http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/">http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/</a> or https://doi.org/: 10.5066/F7P55KJN). All the daily discharge data were acquired via the USGS National Water Information System.</p> <p>These data were used to evaluate the performance of the unbiased load estimates and confidence intervals of river loads based on the Rating curve method using importance sampling in the listed article below. Coastal squeeze on temperate reefs: long-term shifts in salinity, water quality, and oyster-associated communities

<p>Foundation species such as mangroves, saltmarshes, kelps, seagrasses, and oysters thrive within suitable environmental envelopes as narrow ribbons along the land-sea margin. Therefore, these habitat-forming species and resident fauna are sensitive to modified environmental gradients. For oysters, many estuaries impacted by sea-level rise, channelization, and municipal infrastructure are experiencing saltwater intrusion and water-quality degradation that may alter reef distributions, functions, and services. To explore decadal-scale oyster-reef community patterns across a temperate estuary in response to environmental change, we resampled reefs in the Newport River Estuary (NRE) during 2013-2015 that were previously studied during 1955-1956. We also coalesced historical NRE reef distribution (1880s-2015), salinity (1913-2015), and water-quality driven shellfish closure boundary (1970s-2015) data to document environmental trends that could influence reef ecology and service delivery. Over the last 60-120 years, the entire NRE has shifted toward higher salinities. Consequently, oyster-reef communities have become less distinct across the estuary, manifest by 20-27% lower species turnover and decreased faunal richness among NRE reefs in the 2010s relative to the 1950s. During the 2010s, NRE oyster-reef communities tended to cluster around a euhaline, intertidal-reef type more so than during the 1950s. This followed from faunal expansions farther up-estuary and biological degradation of subtidal reefs as NRE conditions became more marine and favorable for aggressive, reef-destroying taxa. In addition to these biological shifts, the area of suitable bottom on which subtidal-reefs persist (ultimately regulated by up-estuary intrusion of marine waters) and support human harvest (driven by water quality, eroding from up-estuary) has decreased by &gt;75% since the natural history of NRE reefs was first explored. This "coastal squeeze" on harvestable subtidal oysters (reduced from a 4.5-km to a 0.75-km envelope along the NRE's main axis) will likely have consequences regarding the economic incentives for future oyster conservation, as well as the suite of services delivered by remaining shellfish reefs (e.g., biodiversity maintenance, seafood supply). More broadly, these findings exemplify how "squeeze" may be a pervasive concern for biogenic habitats along terrestrial or marine ecotones during an era of intense global change.</p>
