Risky sexual behaviours and utilization of HIV testing services among the adolescent girls and young women aged between 15-24 years in Kibra Sub County, Nairobi County, Kenya
<p><strong>Introduction: </strong>HIV remains a significant global health challenge, disproportionately affecting adolescent girls and young women (AGYW). HIV testing is crucial in controlling the infection and reducing its prevalence. Understanding risky sexual behaviors among AGYW is pivotal in aligning prevention interventions. Despite global prevention efforts, testing gaps persist among AGYW, linked to risky sexual behavior (RSB). This study explores the association between these behaviors and HIV testing utilization among AGYW (aged 15-24) in Kibra Sub County, Nairobi.</p> <p><strong>Methods: </strong>A cross-sectional study sampled 379 AGYW from three wards in Kibra Sub County in Nairobi County. To be an eligible participant, one must have been a resident for at least one year before the time of the study and aged between 15-24 years, employing standardized structured interviewer-administered questionnaires and statistical analyses. Results were analyzed using Chi-square tests and logistic regression. Data was collected between June to July 2023.</p> <p><strong>Results: </strong>Overall, HIV testing prevalence was 60.7% (n=230). Those aged 20-24 were 71.3% (n=164), with secondary education were 63.5% (n=146) and married 28.7% (66) were more likely to undergo testing. Participants engaging in risky behaviors such as lack of condom use (3.96 times more likely), experiencing gender-based violence (4.65 times more likely), or contracting STIs (2.85 times more likely) had higher odds of seeking HIV testing services.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>This study establishes a clear link between risky sexual behaviors and HIV testing among AGYW, with a 60.7% testing prevalence; however, gaps still exist. Efforts to enhance testing rates are vital. Interventions should align with acceptable methods, focusing on this high-risk group to ensure effective HIV care and prevention.</p>
Formation of meandering streams in a young floodplain within the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon in the Tibetan Plateau
<p>For submission to the Journal of Geophysical Research Letters, the accompanying dataset comprises seven Excel sheets that encapsulate comprehensive measurements and observations of two meandering streams within the Cuoka floodplain, located in the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon. REXCO Project :Physical exercise increases overall brain oscillatory activity but does not influence inhibitory control in young adults
<p><strong>Methods and design</strong></p> <p><em>Participants</em></p> <p>We recruited 20 young males (19-32 years old, average age 23.8 years old) from the University of Granada (Spain). All participants met the inclusion criteria of normal or corrected to normal vision, reported no neurological, cardiovascular or musculoskeletal disorders, were taking no medication and reporting less than 3 hours of moderate exercise per week. Participants were required to maintain regular sleep-wake cycle for at least one day before each experimental session and to abstain from stimulating beverages or any intense exercise 24 hours before each session. From the 20 participants, one was excluded from the analyses because he did not attend to the last experimental session and another one because of technical issues. Thus, only data from the remaining 18 participants are reported. All subjects gave written informed consent before the study and received 20 euros for their participation. The protocol was approved in accordance with both the ethical guidelines of the University of Granada and the Declaration of Helsinki of 1964.</p> <p><em>Apparatus and materials</em></p> <p>All participants were fitted with a Polar RS800 CX monitor (Polar Electro Öy, Kempele, Finland) to record their heart rate (HR) during the incremental exercise test. We used a ViaSprint 150 P cycle ergometer (Ergoline GmbH, Germany) to induce physical effort and to obtain power values, and a JAEGER Master Screen gas analyser (CareFusion GmbH, Germany) to provide a measure of gas exchange during the effort test. Flanker task stimuli were presented on a 21-inch BENQ screen maintaining a fixed distance of 50 cm between the head of participants and the center of the screen. E-Prime software (Psychology Software Tools, Pittsburgh, PA, USA) was used for stimulus presentation and behavioural data collection.</p> <p><em>Procedure</em></p> <p>Participants completed two counterbalanced experimental sessions of approximately 120 min each. Sessions were scheduled on different days allowing a time interval of 48–72 hours between them to avoid possible fatigue and/or training effects. On each experimental session (see Fig. 1), participants completed a 15’ resting state period sitting in a comfortable chair with closed eyes. Subsequently, they performed 10’ warm-up on a cycle-ergometer at a power load of 20% of their individual VO<sub>2</sub> VAT, following by 30’ exercise at 80% (moderate-intensity exercise session) or at 20% (light intensity exercise session) of their VO<sub>2</sub> VAT (see Table 1). Upon completion of the exercise, a 10’ cool down period at 20% VO<sub>2</sub> VAT of intensity followed. Each participant set his preferred cadence (between 60-90 rpm • min-1) before the warm-up and was asked to maintain this cadence throughout the session in order to match conditions in terms of dual-task demands. Later, participants waited sitting in a comfortable chair until their heart rate returned to within their 130% of heart rate at resting (average waiting time 5’ 44’’). The first flanker task was then performed for 6’, followed by a 15’ resting period with closed eyes. Finally, they again completed the 6’ flanker task.</p> <p><em>Flanker task</em></p> <p>We used a modified version of the Eriksen flanker task based on that reported in Eriksen and Eriksen (1974). The task consisted of a random presentation of a set arrows flanked by other arrows that faced the same or the opposite direction. In the congruent trials, the central arrow is flanked by arrows in the same direction (e.g., <<<<< or >>>>>), while in the incongruent trials, the central arrow is flanked by arrows in the opposite direction (e.g., <<><< or >><>>). Stimuli were displayed sequentially on the center of the screen on a black background. Each trial started with the presentation of a white fixation cross in a black background with random duration between 1000 and 1500 ms. Then, the stimulus was presented during 150 ms and a variable interstimulus interval (1000–1500 ms). Participants were instructed to respond by pressing the left tab button with their left index finger when the central arrow (regardless of condition) faced to the left and the right tab button with their right index finger when the central arrow faced to the right. Participants were encouraged to respond as quick as possible, being accurate. A total of 120 trials were randomly presented (60 congruent and 60 incongruent trials) in each task. Each task lasted for 6 minutes approximately without breaks.</p> <p><em>EEG recording and analysis</em></p> <p>EEG data were recorded at 1000 Hz using a 30-channel actiCHamp System (Brain Products GmbH, Munich, Germany) with active electrodes positioned according to the 10-20 EEG International System and referenced to the Cz electrode. The cap was adapted to individual head size, and each electrode was filled with Signa Electro-Gel (Parker Laboratories, Fairfield, NJ). Participants were instructed to avoid body movements as much as possible, and to keep their gaze on the center of the screen during the exercise. Electrode impedances were kept below 10 kΩ. EEG preprocessing was conducted using custom Matlab scripts and the EEGLAB (Delorme & Makeig, 2004) and Fieldtrip (Oostenveld et al., 2011) Matlab toolboxes. EEG data were resampled at 500 Hz, bandpass filtered offline from 1 and 40 Hz to remove signal drifts and line noise, and re-referenced to a common average reference. Horizontal electrooculograms (EOG) were recorded by bipolar external electrodes for the offline detection of ocular artifacts. The potential influence of electromyographic (EMG) activity in the EEG signal was minimized by using the available EEGLAB routines (Delorme & Makeig, 2004). Independent component analysis was used to detect and remove EEG components reflecting eye blinks (Hoffmann and Falkenstein, 2008). Abnormal spectra epochs which spectral power deviated from the mean by +/-50 dB in the 0-2 Hz frequency window (useful for catching eye movements) and by +25 or -100 dB in the 20-40 Hz frequency window (useful for detecting muscle activity) were rejected. On average, 5.1% of epochs per participant were rejected.</p> <p><em>Spectral power analysis</em>. Processed EEG data from each experimental period (Resting 1, Warm-up, Exercise, Cool Down, Flanker Task 1, Resting 2, Flanker Task 2) were subsequently segmented to 1-s epochs. The spectral decomposition of each epoch was computed using Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT) applying a symmetric Hamming window and the obtained power values were averaged across experimental periods.</p> <p><em>Event-Related Spectral Perturbation (ERSP) analysis.</em> Task-evoked spectral EEG activity was assessed by computing ERSP in epochs extending from –500 ms to 500 ms time-locked to stimulus onset for frequencies between 4 and 40 Hz. Spectral decomposition was performed using sinusoidal wavelets with 3 cycles at the lowest frequency and increasing by a factor of 0.8 with increasing frequency. Power values were normalized with respect to a −300 ms to 0 ms pre-stimulus baseline and transformed into the decibel scale.</p>

Features of speed-strength training of young taekwondo athletes
<p><strong><em>Abstract.</em></strong> <strong><em>Sanсharova N</em></strong><strong><em>.</em></strong><strong><em>, Ogar G</em></strong><strong><em>.</em></strong><strong><em>, Сych D</em></strong><strong><em>. Features of speed-strength training of young taekwondo athletes. </em></strong><strong><em>Purpose: </em></strong><em>is to work out methodology of speed-power preparation for young taekwondo athletes 14 and experimentally to ground her efficiency. <strong>Material and methods:</strong> Twenty young taekwondo athletes, 14 years of age, participated in the experiment. They were divided into 2 groups: experimental, training sessions in which were conducted according to an experimental technique and a control one, the athletes of which were engaged in the usual technique common in most sections of taekwondo. Each group had 10 subjects. The effectiveness of the methodology was determined by the dynamics of the fitness indicators of young athletes, where the overall physical preparedness and special shock preparedness of the subjects were assessed. Research methods: analysis of scientific sources, pedagogical observations, pedagogical testing, video shooting, mathematical and statistical processing of research results.</em> <strong><em>Results.</em></strong><em> a study of the dynamics of the fitness of young taekwondo athletes of the experimental group, during the experiment, showed a significant improvement in the results in all the tests (p<0</em><em>,</em><em>05-0</em><em>,</em><em>001). In young taekwondo athletes of the control group, during the experiment, significant changes occurred only in four tests out of nine (p<0</em><em>,</em><em>05-0</em><em>,</em><em>01). Thus, the dynamics of positive changes in the preparedness of athletes of the control group is significantly inferior to positive changes in the experimental group.</em> <strong><em>Conclusions:</em></strong><em> The experimental methodology of speed-strength training of young taekwondo athletes with the use of a wide range of means was developed, the effectiveness of its influence on the special shock training of athletes is proved by the results of the study.</em> <em>Thus, it can be argued that the speed-strength orientation of the training process of young taekwondo athletes allows athletes to better realize their technical and tactical potential. Trainers, teachers, during the training sessions, should not be limited to competitive and special means, especially when working with young athletes.</em></p>
Association between decreased ovarian reserve and poor oocyte quality in young women.
<p>Young women may present with decreased ovarian reserve (DOR) and/or poor oocyte quality. These may lead to poor reproductive outcomes. Our retrospective study evaluated the association between oocyte quality and ovarian reserve in women aged between 18 and 35 years and undergoing controlled ovarian stimulation (COS) for in vitro fertilization. We defined DOR when anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels were <1.2 ng/mL, basal follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) levels were ≥10 mIU/mL, or the antral follicle count (AFC) was <10 and analyzed the association between the number of mature or immature oocytes and the presence of alterations in oocyte morphology. We also evaluated the association between gonadotropin dose used in COS and oocyte quality. The study included 49 patients with a mean age of 31.0 ± 3.3 years; 348 oocyte images were evaluated. Patients with basal FSH levels of <10 mIU/mL had more mature oocytes than the group of patients with elevated FSH levels (6 vs. 2; p < 0.001). Patients with AMH<1.2 ng/mL had fewer mature oocytes and increased basal FSH levels (p < 0.001). Each unit increase in serum basal FSH levels represented a 42% increase in the likelihood of having an oocyte with cytoplasm abnormality (p = 0.006), while patients with AMH levels of <1.2 ng/mL had 5.3 times the risk of having an oocyte with cytoplasm abnormality [p = 0.004] and were 3 times more likely to have an abnormality in the perivitelline space (p = 0.018). When the AFC was <10, an increased risk of abnormally shaped oocytes was observed (p = 0.035). In summary, DOR was associated with poorer quality oocytes in women up to 35 years of age who underwent COS.</p>
A set of synthetic spectral energy distributions for "diskless", intermediate-mass young stars
<p>These models were published in conjunction with <em>The Duration of Star Formation in Galactic Giant Molecular Clouds. I. The Great Nebula in Carina, </em>by <a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1906.01730">Povich et al. (2019)</a>. They will also be used in subsequent papers in that series.</p> <p>The format of these models conforms with the standards of <a href="https://doi.org/10.1051/0004-6361/201425486">Robitaille (2017)</a>, so they are compatible with the <a href="http://sedfitter.readthedocs.io/en/stable/installation.html">python implementation</a> of the <a href="https://doi.org/10.1086/512039">Robitaille et al. (2007)</a> SED fitting tool. We have pre-convolved these models with a number of useful filters, including Johnson/Bessel <em>UB</em><em>VRI, </em>UKIRT <em>ZYJHK, </em>VISTA <em>ZYJHK<sub>S</sub></em>, 2MASS <em>JHK<sub>S</sub></em>, <em>Spitzer/</em>IRAC and MIPS. </p> <p>A software pipeline implementing these models to constrain the age and mass distributions of young stellar populations is also <a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3234101">publicly available</a>.</p> <p><strong>Limitations of these models</strong></p> <p><em>These models produce the best results for stars more massive than the Sun and older than about 0.5 Myr. </em>They employ the pre-main-sequence evolutionary tracks of <a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/astro-ph/0003477">Siess et al. (2000)</a> and <a href="https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/1996A&A...307..829B/abstract">Bernasconi & Maeder (1996)</a>. Numerous modern tracks offer significant improvement in the treatment of subsolar-mass stars. In addition, the Kurucz stellar atmospheres used in these synthetic SEDs work best for T<sub>eff </sub>> 4,000 K; for cooler temperatures other models, for example the PHOENIX photospheres, may be more appropriate.</p> <p>Newer evolutionary tracks covering the intermediate-mass range are now available, for example the Geneva pre-MS tracks of <a href="https://doi.org/10.1051/0004-6361/201935051">Haemmerlé et al. (2019)</a>. The principal innovation of these modern models is the treatment of accretion and location of the intermediate-mass stellar birthline. The coolest, most luminous models in this set are likely <em>unphysical</em>, representing fully-convective stars of >2 solar masses and <0.5 Myr isochronal age.</p>
Sequencing data from: Divergent lineages in a young species: the case of Datilillo (Yucca valida), a broadly distributed plant from the Baja California Peninsula
<div> <div> <p><strong>Premise: </strong>Globally, barriers triggered by climatic changes have caused habitat fragmentation and population allopatric divergence. Across North America, oscillations during the Quaternary have played important roles in the distribution of wildlife. Notably, diverse plant species from the Baja California Peninsula in western North America, isolated during the Pleistocene glacial–interglacial cycles, exhibit strong genetic structure and highly concordant divergent lineages across their ranges. A representative plant genus of the peninsula is <em>Yucca</em>, with <em>Y. valida</em> having the widest range. Although a dominant species, it has an extensive distribution discontinuity between 26° N and 27° N, suggesting restricted gene flow. Moreover, historical distribution models indicate the absence of an area with suitable conditions for the species during the Last Interglacial, making it an interesting model for studying genetic divergence.<br>Methods: We assembled 4411 SNPs from 147 plants of <em>Y. valida</em> throughout its range to examine its phylogeography to identify the number of genetic lineages, quantify their genetic differentiation, reconstruct their demographic history and estimate the age of the species.<br>Results: Three allopatric lineages were identified based on the SNPs. Our analyses support that genetic drift is the driver of genetic differentiation among these lineages. We estimated an age of less than 1 million years for the common ancestor of <em>Y. valida</em> and its sister species.<br>Conclusions: Habitat fragmentation caused by climatic changes, low dispersal, and an extensive geographical range gap acted as cumulative mechanisms leading to allopatric divergence in <em>Y. valida</em>.</p> </div> </div>

The Keck/NIRC2 Young M-star Survey Data Products
<p>The Keck/NIRC2 young M-star survey data products consist of complete preprocessed <em>L'</em> coronagraphic frames, associated parallactic angles, unocculted PSF frames, Super-RDI reduced images, and final optimal contrast curves for 155 targets observed in the survey. A FITS file is associated with each target in the survey. All FITS files have been compressed together into "super-rdi-mstar-survey-data-products.zip". The file naming for the FITS data product follows the convention "<target name>_<observation date>.fits", where target name corresponds to the "Name" column and observation date corresponds to the "UT Date" column in Table 1 of Sanghi et al. (2024). The Jupyter notebook "read_fits_product.ipynb" provides an example on how to access the data products. Skin eruptions in acute hemorrhagic edema of young children: systematic review of the literature
<p><strong>Background:</strong> Acute hemorrhagic edema is a skin limited small-vessel leukocytoclastic vasculitis, which affects infants 4 weeks to 2 years of age and remits within 3 weeks. The diagnosis is made clinically in not-ill appearing children with acute onset of raised annular or nummular eruptions and edema. In this vasculitis, type, distribution and evolution of the rash have never been systemically investigated. To address this issue, we employed the data contained in the Acute Hemorrhagic Edema Bibliographic Database, which incorporates all reports on acute hemorrhagic edema. <strong>Summary:</strong> Key features of rash were documented in 383 children. Annular eruptions in strict sense, usually targetoid, were reported in 375 (98%) cases (many children also presented polycyclic or arciform eruptions). Nummular eruptions were also very common (N=358; 93%). Purpuric eruptions and ecchymoses were reported in the vast majority of cases. Macules and wheals were described in a minority of cases. Edema, detected in all cases, was mostly painful, indurated and non-pitting. Following regions were affected, in decreasing order, by annular or nummular eruptions: legs, feet, face, arms, ears, trunk, and genitals. With the exception of feet, which were very often affected, the same distribution was reported for edema. The initial eruption was often a wheal or a macule that evolved into a nummular or an annular eruption. Nummular eruptions successively evolved into annular ones<strong>. Key message</strong>: this study carefully characterizes type, distribution and evolution of skin eruption in acute hemorrhagic edema. The data help physicians to rapidly and noninvasively make the clinical diagnosis of this vasculitis.</p>
Indicative distribution map for Ecosystem Functional Group T3.4 Young rocky pavements, lava flows and screes
<p>This archive contains indicative distribution maps and profiles for <strong>T3.4 Young rocky pavements, lava flows and screes</strong>, a ecosystem functional group (EFG, level 3) of the <a href="https://global-ecosystems.org/">IUCN Global Ecosystem Typology</a> (v2.0). Please refer to Keith <em>et al.</em> (2020) for details.</p> <p>The descriptive profiles provide brief summaries of key ecological traits and processes, maps are indicative of global distribution patterns, and are not intended to represent fine-scale patterns. The maps show areas of the world containing major (value of 1, coloured red) or minor occurrences (value of 2, coloured yellow) of each ecosystem functional group. Minor occurrences are areas where an ecosystem functional group is scattered in patches within matrices of other ecosystem functional groups or where they occur in substantial areas, but only within a segment of a larger region. Given bounds of resolution and accuracy of source data, the maps should be used to query which EFG are likely to occur within areas, rather than which occur at particular point locations. Detailed methods and references for the maps are included in the profile (xml format).</p>
An organizing feature of bumble bee life history: worker emergence promotes queen reproduction and survival in young nests
<p>Bumble bee queens initiate nests solitarily and transition to living socially once they successfully rear their first cohort of offspring. Bumble bees are disproportionately important for early season pollination, and many populations are experiencing dramatic declines. In this system, the onset of the social stage is critical for nest survival, yet the mechanisms that facilitate this transition remain understudied. Further, the majority of conservation efforts targets the social stage of the bumble bee life cycle and do not address the solitary founding stage. We experimentally manipulated the timing of worker emergence in young nests of bumble bee (Bombus impatiens) queens to determine whether and how queen fecundity and survival are impacted by the emergence of workers in the nest. We found that queens with workers added to the nest exhibit increased ovary activation, accelerated egg laying, elevated juvenile hormone (JH) titres and also lower mortality relative to solitary queens. We also show that JH is more strongly impacted by the social environment than associated with queen reproductive state, suggesting that this key regulator of insect reproduction has expanded its function in bumble bees to also influence social organization. We further demonstrate that these effects are independent of queen social history, suggesting that this underlying mechanism promoting queen fecundity is reversible and short lived. Synchronization between queen reproductive status and emergence of workers in the nest may ultimately increase the likelihood of early nesting success in social systems with solitary nest founding. Given that bumble bee workers regulate queen physiology as we have demonstrated, the timing of worker emergence in the nest likely impacts queen fitness, colony developmental trajectories and ultimately nesting success. Collectively, our findings underline the importance of conservation interventions for bumble bees that support the early nesting period and facilitate the production and maintenance of workers in young nests.</p>
