20m Africa rice distribution map in 2023
<p>This dataset provides a 20 m Resolution Annual Rice Distribution Map in 2023 of 34 African countries with rice area statistics over 5000 Ha(FAO, 2022). The accuracy of the dataset achieves an overall accuracy of 86.30%, with both user’s and producer’s accuracies exceeding 85%. Mapping the potential habitat suitability, and opportunities of bush encroacher species in Southern Africa: a case study of the SteamBioAfrica project.
<p>Senegalia mellifera (Benth) Seigler & Ebinger. , Dichrostachys cinerea (L.) Wight & Arn. and Terminalia sericea Burch. Ex DC., are three important bush encroacher species that contribute to the well-known ecological process named "thicketization" in Southern Africa. This issue has persisted for many years, impacting species distribution, plant communities, soil, and fauna dynamics. According to climate change projections, Southern Africa is expected to become drier and warmer in future scenarios, creating favourable conditions for proliferation of bush encroacher species.</p> <p>In the paper, we analyze the habitat suitability of these bush encroachers through MaxEnt 3.4.4 under three different future climate models and scenarios. Future projections were made using the shared socio-economic pathways (SSPs) for greenhouse gas concentrations, specifically SSP245-585 across two-time horizons: 2041-2060 and 2061-2180. We utilized <a href="https://www.worldclim.org/data/cmip6/cmip6climate.html">WorldClim 1-km resolution climate data</a> from three global Earth System Models (ESMs) from the sixth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) that obtained better results than CMIP5 models (Bouramdane 2022; Mmame and Ngongondo 2024): the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology Earth System Model (MPI-ESM1.2-HR), the Hadley Climate Center Earth System Model (UK-ESM1.0-LL) and the Institute Model for Numerical Mathematics (INM-CM5-0). </p>
Comparison of the phytochemical composition and bioactivity of the latex of Hura crepitans L. from Peru and Africa by metabolomic approaches
<p><em><span>Hura crepitans</span></em><span> <span> </span>(Euphorbiaceae), is widespread in the Amazon rainforest and on plantations in sub-Saharan Africa. This tree produces an irritating milky latex rich in secondary metabolites, notably daphnane-type diterpenes and cerebrosides. Previous studies have shown that huratoxin, the main daphnane in the latex, significantly and selectively inhibited the growth of colorectal cancer cells through a unique mechanism involving the activation of PKCζ. One major challenge in isolating active molecules from natural products is the accessibility of the resource. This study explores the phytochemical composition and cytotoxic activities of latexes collected in Peru, Benin, and Togo using UHPLC-MS and metabolomics tools to identify a renewable source of bioactive compounds. Significant inter- and intra-continental differences in chemical composition have been highlighted, with daphnanes being concentrated in the Peruvian samples. Extracts form latexes collected in Peru showed cytostatic activity on Caco-2 cells, correlated with the presence of daphnanes, while some African samples exhibited cytotoxic activity on Jurkat and Hela cancer cell lines, leading to the identification of potential other new bioactive compounds such as sterol and cerebrosides.</span></p> <p><span> </span></p>
