Measurement of interstellar extinction for classical TTauri stars using FUV H2 line fluxes

Machine-learning-based validation of Microsoft Azure Kinect in measuring gait profiles

<p>The dataset was used to validate Microsoft Azure Kinect in measuring gait profiles, employing machine learning techniques to investigate the impact of residual errors due to environmental, methodological, and processing factors on the accuracy of gait profile assessments. Data were collected from healthy and post-stroke subjects using a motion capture system and a 3D camera-based system with MAK, and corresponding gait profiles were estimated and compiled into a dataset. Coping with branch excision when measuring leaf net photosynthetic rates in a lowland tropical forest

Measuring leaf gas exchange from canopy leaves is fundamental for our understanding of photosynthesis and for a realistic representation of carbon uptake in vegetation models. Since canopy leaves are often difficult to reach, especially in tropical forests with emergent trees up to 60 meters at remote places, canopy access techniques such as canopy cranes or towers have facilitated photosynthetic measurements. These structures are expensive and therefore not very common. As an alternative, branches are often cut to enable leaf gas exchange measurements. The effect of branch excision on leaf gas exchange rates should be minimised and quantified to evaluate possible bias. We compared light-saturated leaf net photosynthetic rates measured on excised and intact branches. We selected branches positioned at three canopy positions, estimated relative to the top of the canopy: upper sunlit foliage, middle canopy foliage, and lower canopy foliage. We studied the variation of the effects of branch excision and transport amongst branches at these different heights in the canopy. After excision and transport, light-saturated leaf net photosynthetic rates were close to zero for most leaves due to stomatal closure. However, when the branch had acclimated to its new environmental conditions – which took on average 20 minutes –light-saturated leaf net photosynthetic rates did not significantly differ between the excised and intact branches. We therefore conclude that branch excision does not affect the measurement of light-saturated leaf net photosynthesis, provided that the branch is recut under water and is allowed sufficient time to acclimate to its new environmental conditions.

Data from: Dynamic measurements of black oystercatcher (Haematopus bachmani) predation on mussels (Mytilus californianus)

Intertidal zone mussels can face threats from a variety of predatory species during high and low tides, and they must balance the threat of predation against other needs such as feeding and aerobic respiration. Black oystercatchers (Haematopus bachmani) on the Pacific coast of North America can depend on the mussel Mytilus californianus for a substantial portion of their diet. Observations suggest that oystercatchers tend to focus on mussels beginning to gape their valves during rising tides, following periods of aerial emersion. We present detailed, autonomous field measurements of the dynamics of three such predation events in the rocky intertidal zone. We measured accelerations of up to 4 g imposed on mussels, with handling times of 115 to 290 s required to open the shell and remove the majority of tissue. In each case a single oystercatcher attacked a mussel that had gaped the shell valves slightly wider than its neighbors as the rising tide began to splash the mussel bed, but no other obvious characteristic of the mussels, such as body temperature or orientation, could be linked to the oystercatcher's individual prey choice.

Optical traits perform equally well as directly-measured functional traits in explaining the impact of an invasive plant on litter decomposition

<p>1. Functional traits can help elucidate and predict the impact of invasive plant species on ecosystem functioning. Yet, this approach requires comprehensive and labor-intensive trait collection campaigns, covering intraspecific trait variation of both the invader and native species in the invaded community. One potential way to overcome these logistic constraints is using hyperspectral remote sensing technology to efficiently quantify functional trait values. Although such spectrally derived or 'optical' traits are known to closely link to directly-measured functional traits, little research has explored how well these optical traits perform in assessing invader-induced ecosystem impact. 2. Here, we explored the trait-mediated impact of the invasive Rosa rugosa on litter decomposition and evaluated whether optical traits perform equally well as directly-measured traits in predicting litter decomposition variation. We collected data on species-specific functional traits, leaf hyperspectral reflectance and standardized 'tea bag index' litter decomposition across 25 invaded and 25 uninvaded coastal grassland plots. The selected traits were all potentially related to litter decomposition and covered the leaf economics spectrum, additional leaf structural components and competitive ability. Optical traits were quantified through a combination of a physical radiative transfer model inversion and vegetation indices calculations. 3. Invasion significantly increased the stabilization factor, i.e. the amount of resulting recalcitrant litter. Invader impact on litter decomposition could be entirely explained by changes it induced in the functional traits of the native community, rather than by the invader's traits itself. More specifically, the invader pushed the invaded community towards traits associated with high litter quality. Optical traits performed equally well as directly-measured traits in explaining the invasion impact on the stabilization factor (R2= 41.9% vs. 38.5%). Furthermore, the interpretation of the results based on optical traits resulted in a similar functional understanding of the invader impact. 4. Synthesis: Our results indicate the potential of hyperspectral data to explain changes in ecosystem functioning. The combination of radiative transfer models and vegetation indices allowed to extract all relevant trait information from the hyperspectral data. This framework thus presents a practical short-cut to assess relevant leaf traits, requiring only a limited amount of field trait measurements.</p>

An automated sensitive approach for measuring whole gut transit time

Background <p>Commonly used methods to measure whole gut transit time in rodents have yet to combine high sensitivity, objectivity and automation. We have developed a novel method using oral gavage of non-toxic fluorescent dye particles and their detection by fluorescence imaging to enable unbiased automated detection of gut transit time simultaneously in 8 cages.</p> Methods <p>Naïve mice (n=20) were gavaged with a 4.4% suspension of fluorescent dye in CMC in 3 groups on 2 occasions. Each group was imaged in 8 cages at 5-minute intervals using blue LEDs for illumination and a Sony full-frame mirrorless camera with a green band-pass emission filter. Custom Matlab code counted the number of fluorescent boli per cage post-hoc and provided graphical and spreadsheet output. Boli counts across a wide range of parameters were compared to blind assessments by an experimenter.</p> Results <p>Fluorescent boli were detected with high sensitivity, while unstained boli were readily rejected. All cages showed no fluorescent boli for the first ~20 frames (120 minutes), after which many cages gradually show a rise to 1-6 fluorescent boli. The mean time to first fluorescent bolus in each session was 264±141 and 223±81 minutes post-gavage, with no within subject consistency. There was high correlation between automated scores and that of experimenter (r=0.95±0.02), being robust to parameter changes.</p> Conclusions &amp; Inferences <p>This novel approach provides a reliable, automatic and low-cost method of measuring gastrointestinal transit time in mice.</p>

A common measure of prey immune function is not constrained by the cascading effects of predators

<p>Simultaneously defending against predators, stymieing competitors, and generating immune responses can impose conflicting demands for host species caught in the entanglement of a food web. Host immunity is not only shaped by direct interactions among species, but also many indirect cascading effects. By reducing competition, predators in particular can affect resource acquisition necessary for hosts to mount energetically costly immune responses. However, identifying the links between predators and host immune responses determined by resource acquisition is a complex affair, because predators can (i) reduce host density and thus competition among hosts, (ii) exert non-consumptive trait-mediated effects on host resource acquisition behavior, and (iii) generate natural selection on host resource acquisition behavior. To examine the relative contributions of these potential predator driven density- and trait-mediated effects on a key aspect of immune function (total phenoloxidase activity, total PO), we conducted mesocosm and field experiments with larval damselflies ( Enallagma signatum ) and their dominant fish predator ( Lepomis macrochirus ). Although we expected to observe declines in total PO activity with increases in damselfly density, we found no relationship between density and total PO activity. We also found no support for the prediction that total PO activity would vary as a result of either non-consumptive trait-mediated effects or selection on damselfly foraging activity underlying resource acquisition. Despite the lack of trait- or densitymediated effects, we did find that total PO activity increased with damselfly prey density among lakes, implying resource limitation for this aspect of immune function. These unexpected results point to the need to better understand the ecological conditions whereby predators and competitors constrain immune functions necessary for species to defend themselves in complex food webs.</p>

Chloroform fluxes measured at the tundra on King George Island, Antarctica

<p>In this study, the first <em>in situ</em> static-chamber measurements were conducted at coastal Antarctica tundra for CHCl<sub>3</sub> fluxes, which showed that CHCl<sub>3</sub> was naturally emitted from the Antarctic tundra. This dataset includes the chloroform fluxes measured from the tundra at the Fildes Peninsula and Ardley Island based upon static-chamber measurements and lab-based incubations under different manipulated conditions. Chloroform&nbsp;concentrations were analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with a mass spectrometry (GC/MS; Agilent 6890N/5973, Agilent Technologies, Santa Clara, CA).&nbsp;</p>

<p>Co2 concentration, temperature and humidity in primary classrooms during the Covid-19 Safety Measures in Spain.&nbsp;The data presented were collected between 1 May 2020 and 23 June 2021 using a low-cost CO<sub>2</sub> sensor called SCD30 (https://bit.ly/3dDWXu1). This sensor can messure CO<sub>2</sub>, temperature and air humidity. Six nodes were built and deployed in six classrooms in two different schools in two different periods. In the first school, located in Vilafam&eacute;s (Castell&oacute;n, Spain), a total of 38,891 observations were carried out. Altogether 34,570 measurements were captured in the second school located in Vall d&rsquo;Alba (Castell&oacute;n, Spain).</p>

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy visually evoked measurements and Autism Questionnaire score in adults and children

<p><strong>Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) visually-evoked data collected from healthy adults&nbsp;and children. The validation of new phase-dependent gait stability measures: a modelling approach

<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Identification of individuals at risk of falling is important when designing fall prevention methods. Current stability measures that estimate gait stability and robustness appear limited in predicting falls in older adults. Inspired by recent findings of phase-dependent local stability changes within a gait cycle, we used compass-walker models to test several phase-dependent stability metrics for their usefulness to predict gait robustness. These metrics are closely related to the often-employed maximum finite-time Lyapunov exponent and maximum Floquet multiplier. They entail linearizing the system in a rotating hypersurface orthogonal to the period-one solution, and estimating the local divergence rate of the swing phases and the foot strikes. We correlated the metrics with the gait robustness of two compass walker models with either point or circular feet to estimate their prediction accuracy. To also test for the metrics' invariance under coordinate transform, we represented the point-feet walker in both Euler-Lagrange and Hamiltonian canonical form. Our simulations revealed that for most of the metrics, correlations differ between models and also change under coordinate transforms, severely limiting the prediction accuracy of gait robustness. The only exception that consistently correlated with gait robustness is the divergence of foot strikes. These results admit challenges of using phase-dependent stability metrics as objective measure to quantify gait robustness.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
