Postfire tree regeneration in Glacier National Park
Recent increases in fire frequency and severity across the western US are triggering abrupt changes in ecosystem structure and composition, especially in lower montane forests, but consequences of fire-regime change for mesic, mixed-conifer forests remain uncertain. Glacier National Park (Montana, USA) is characterized by a complex mosaic of species typical of Rocky Mountain, Pacific Northwest and boreal floras, creating opportunities for species composition to shift as species respond individualistically to environmental change. We quantified prefire and postfire stem density and composition in a recent anomalously short-interval fire (15 yrs) and historically typical long-interval fire (88-282+ yrs) to answer two questions: (1) How do the structure and composition of tree regeneration differ after long- and short-interval fires that burned in close proximity? (2) What drivers explain differences in postfire regeneration densities among species? We additionally compared understory cover in each fire to anticipate consequences of contemporary fire for the whole plant community. Mean postfire tree seedling density was 45 times higher after the long- than short-interval fire, and many stands in the short-interval fire lacked any tree regeneration. Postfire tree seedling densities were above prefire stem densities in the long-interval fire but well below in the short-interval fire. After both fires, fire-avoiding conifers (e.g., Picea engelmannii, Abies lasiocarpa) were generally replaced by fire-tolerating or fire-embracing species (e.g., Larix occidentalis, Pinus contorta var. latifolia). Some stands remained dominated by fire-sensitive conifers after long-interval fire but never after short-interval fire. Seedlings of Thuja plicata and Tsuga heterophylla were present after the long-interval fire but absent before and after the short-interval fire, despite historically occupying both burned areas. Morphometric measures from birds in the Serra do Cipó National Park (1999-2009), Minas Gerais, Brazil
Morphometric data of 111 bird species, and 1732 individuals, captured in mist nets over a period of 10 years, from February 1999 to October 2009, were presented. The captures were made in the locality of 'Lagoa das Capivaras', inserted in the Serra do Cipó National Park (-19.346023, -43.609918). The capture with misty nets consisted of the use of bird capture nets of 12, nine, and six meters in length by three meters in height. The captured birds were identified at the species level, with the aid of guides and identification keys, and marked with numbered metal rings provided by CEMAVE - Centro de Pesquisas para Conservação das Aves Silvestres. Capture sessions were carried out by placing two to 20 nets in different locations throughout the area, remaining open throughout the morning, for several days and months over the years mentioned. All individuals were listed following the nomenclature and classification suggested by the Brazilian Committee for Ornithological Records. Biometric data of each individual were measured regarding body mass, wing length tarsus, the beak (height, length, and width), occiput (occipital region to nasofrontal suture), and total length. For this, calipers, rulers, and dynamometers with a precision of 0.1 g were used for small birds (such as those of the family Trochilidae), 1 g for medium birds, and 10 g for birds over 100 g. In addition to the age classification: juvenile (J), adult (A), and indeterminate (I); and sex: male (M), female (F), and indeterminate (I). Bird's morphometric is important data to support a variety of studies, especially those of taxonomy, physiology, ecology, and evolutionary implications of a particular species.

Rocky Mountain National Park bulk inorganic N deposition in close proximity to roads, summer 2021
Vehicles are an important source for N deposition that may negatively impact roadside ecosystems. While elevated roadside N deposition has been found in many locations, it is not yet known if vehicle emissions cause measurable increases of N deposition in complex, mountainous terrain adjacent to roads. To address this, this study investigated the effect of vehicle N emissions on throughfall (through trees) and open N deposition in a high traffic corridor in mountainous terrain of Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, USA. We measured bulk (wet + dry) atmospheric N deposition in throughfall and open samplers on transects of 750 (throughfall) and 225 (open) m moving away from the road using ion exchange resin (IER) collectors. This dataset contains inorganic nitrogen deposition data from this study.
National-scale, remotely sensed lake trophic state (LTS-US) 1984-2020
Lake trophic state is a key water quality property that integrates a lake’s physical, chemical, and biological processes. Despite the importance of trophic state as a gauge of lake water quality, standardized and machine readable observations are uncommon. Remote sensing presents an opportunity to detect and analyze lake trophic state with reproducible, robust methods across time and space. We used Landsat surface reflectance and lake morphometric data to create the first compendium of lake trophic state for more than 56,000 lakes of at least 10 ha in size throughout the contiguous United States from 1984 through 2020. The dataset was constructed with FAIR data principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reproducible) in mind, where data are publicly available, relational keys from parent datasets are retained, and all data wrangling and modeling routines are scripted for future reuse. Together, this resource offers critical data to address basic and applied research questions about lake water quality at a suite of spatial and temporal scales.
Postfire aspen presence, persistence and size in subalpine forests of Yellowstone National Park, USA. 1996 - 2014
Determining how ecological filters (e.g., climate, soils, biotic interactions) influence where species succeed in heterogeneous landscapes is challenging for long-lived species (e.g., trees), because filters can vary over space and change slowly through time. Stand-replacing wildfires create opportunities for establishment of tree-species cohorts and can catalyze rapid shifts in where species occur, facilitating unique opportunities for long-term study. We quantified effects of multiple ecological filters on a colonizing cohort of aspen (Populus tremuloides) that established from seed throughout burned lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta var. latifolia) forests after the 1988 fires in Yellowstone National Park (Wyoming, USA) to ask: (1) How have aspen presence, density, and size varied across the postfire landscape, and what filters explain these spatial and temporal patterns? (2) How does aspen above-and belowground biomass vary with postfire lodgepole-pine density? Aspen persisted to postfire year 25 in 58% of the plots in which aspen were present in postfire year 11 (n = 45), and mean stem density declined from 522 to 310 stems ha-1. Mean aspen height doubled (from 29 to 59 cm) over this period. Ecological filters related to climate, competition, herbivory, and soils all differentially affected aspen presence, persistence, and size. Growing season temperature, inter-specific competition, and herbivory also changed through time, altering their effects on the colonizing cohort, and shifting where on the landscape aspen persistence and growth were ultimately favored. Eleven years postfire, aspen were favored at warmer, low elevations; ungulate browsing strongly constrained aspen heights; and competition was unimportant. By 25-years postfire, temperatures warmed nearly 1 C, and aspen were more likely to persist at cooler, high elevations. Demography of the Florida endemic Eriogonum longifolium var. gnaphalifolium (Polygonaceae) at Archbold Biological Station and the Lake Wales Ridge National Wildlife Refuge Carter Creek from 1990 to 2013
We studied scrub buckwheat (Eriogonum longifolium var. gnaphalifolium) from 1990 - 2013 at Archbold Biological Station and from 2001 - 2010 at the Lake Wales Ridge National Wildlife Refuge Carter Creek. This dataset contains annual demographic data on survival, recruitment, growth and reproductive effort. The plant is long-lived and exhibits plant dormancy. It resprouts following fire and also recruits many seedlings following post-fire stimulated flowering. Modeling based on demographic data has shown that frequent fires (a minimum of every five years or every 20 years depending on assumptions) are necessary for viable populations of scrub buckwheat. This fire regime is usually met in sandhill but not always in oak-hickory scrub, another habitat for this endemic plant.
Demography of scrub plum (Prunus geniculata) at Carter Creek, Lake Wales Ridge National Wildlife Refuge, 2001-2013, in relation to fire and felling
At the Carter Creek unit of the Lake Wales Ridge National Wildlife Refuge, we collected demographic data annually on scrub plum (Prunus geniculata), a federally endangered shrub. We initially selected 903 plants (tagged and GPS'd) distributed among 12 management units in February 2001, a minimum of 65 plants per management unit. We worked with United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) staff and a crew from The Nature Conservancy (TNC) to impose three management treatments on a unit basis (4 replicate units) in 2001 (finishing in August): control, chain-saw felling of large oaks, and chain-saw felling followed by prescribed burns. The treatments also served as the basis for vegetation sampling and demographic research on other species (Rickey et al. 2013). Beginning in 2001 and continuing through 2008, we collected annual data (in February) on each marked plant, including survival status, life history stage, height, maximum crown diameter, and reproductive structures. We also scoured areas near plants for new seedlings. We subsampled plants from 2009-2012, and then re-censused all plants in 2013. We also noted fire severity in 2001, 2007, and 2009 in four categories for each plant. Analyses through 2007 (Menges and Weekley 2013) showed that scrub plum had extremely high annual survival (98%) but minimal seedling recruitment. Scrub plum had high survival in all four burn treatments, although severely burned plants were more likely to die. Fire benefited scrub plum as plants resprouted vigorously, increased stem numbers post-fire, and had higher flower production 2-3 years after fires. Between fires, plants increased in height and diameter but retained fewer stems. We concluded that chainsaw felling of oaks did not have strong effects on scrub plum and could be a useful management tool, but we also emphasized the primacy of fire as an ecological disturbance and management treatment in this sandhill ecosystem.
