Can wildland fire management alter 21st-century subalpine fire and forests in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, USA
In subalpine forests of the western United States that historically experienced infrequent, high-severity fire, whether fire management can shape 21st-century fire regimes and forest dynamics to meet natural resource objectives is not known. Managed wildfire use (i.e., allowing lightning-ignited fires to burn when risk is low instead of suppressing them) is one approach for maintaining natural fire regimes and fostering mosaics of forest structure, stand age, and tree-species composition, while protecting people and property. However, little guidance exists for where and when this strategy may be effective with climate change. We simulated most of the contiguous forest in Grand Teton National Park, WY to ask: (1) How would subalpine fires and forest structure be different if fires had not been suppressed during the last three decades? (2) What is the relative influence of climate change versus fire management strategy on future fire and forests? We contrasted fire and forests from 1989-2098 under two fire management scenarios (managed wildfire use and fire suppression), two general circulation models (CNRM-CM5 and GFDL-ESM2M), and two representative concentration pathways (8.5 and 4.5). We found little difference between management scenarios in the number, size, or severity of fires during the last three decades. With 21st-century warming, fire activity increased rapidly, particularly after 2050, and followed nearly identical trajectories in both management scenarios. Area burned per year between 2018-2099 was 1,700% greater than in the last three decades (1989-2017). Large areas of forest were abruptly lost; only 65% of the original 40,178 ha of forest remained by 2098. However, forests stayed connected and fuels were abundant enough to support profound increases in burning through this century. Our results indicate that strategies emphasizing managed wildfire use, rather than suppression, will not alter climate-induced changes to fire and forests in subalpine land

Inorganic nitrogen, microbial ecoenzymatic activities, and organic matter in soils collected from the Monsoon Rainfall Manipulation Experiment (MRME), Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico during the 2014 growing season
Drylands are characterized by a pulse dynamics framework in which episodic rain events trigger brief pulses of biological activity and resource availability that regulate primary production in these ecosystems. Relatively small rain events can stimulate microbial processes like decomposition that release inorganic nitrogen needed by plant processes, which typically also depend on soil moisture received from larger rain events. Little is known how changes in rainfall patterns may affect plant available nitrogen in dryland soils, particularly across temporal scales. Therefore, we conducted a study to examine the daily and seasonal responses of plant available nitrogen to rain events that differed in size and frequency throughout a summer monsoon in a northern Chihuahuan Desert grassland located in the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico, USA. This data package, which accompanies an associated manuscript (Brown et al. 2022), contains measurements of inorganic nitrogen, nitrogen-acquiring microbial ecoenzymatic activities, and organic matter in soils collected from the Monsoon Rainfall Manipulation Experiment (MRME) during the 2014 summer growing season.
Soil fungal community and activity under dominant plant species at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico: October 2013
We measured fungal composition and activity in the soil under dominant plant species across a grassland to shrubland transition to determine if shrubs cultivate soil microbial communities as they encroach grasslands. The project was conducted in the northern Chihuahuan desert at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge (site of the Sevilleta LTER) in New Mexico on October 20, 2013. Soils were collected under one shrub (Larrea tridentata) and three grass (Bouteloua eriopoda, Bouteloua gracilis, Pleuraphis jamesii) species in grassland, shrubland, and the ecotone region between grasslands and shrublands. Soil fungal communities were evaluated using DNA amplicon sequencing and fungal activity was quantified using several extracellular enzyme activity assays. Soil texture and soil chemistry were also measured.
Subsurface Temperature Data from Seven Rock Glaciers in Rocky Mountain National Park and Niwot Ridge LTER, Colorado, USA, 2018-2019
HOBO temperature-sensing data loggers (hereafter, sensors) were placed under the surface of seven rock glaciers predicted to have the presence (n=4) or absence (n=3) of sub-surface ice in Rocky Mountain National Park and near Niwot Ridge Long-term Ecological Research site in Colorado. Sub-surface temperatures were recorded to evaluate habitat differences among American pika populations. All sensors (model H08 pro, H08, or H02; Onset Computer Corporation, onsetcomp.com) recorded temperature (±0.2° Celsius) every one or two hours for one year starting in September 2018. Each rock glacier received at least one sensor, positioned near the center and near pika sign. Three rock glaciers received an additional sensor positioned near the edge of the rock glacier near pika sign. Sensors were placed at similar depths (~0.75 m) and similar aspects.
ARCSS/TK water chemistry and epilithon characterization from the Noatak National Preserve, Kelly River region (2010) and Feniak Lake region (2011).
These data are from two remote field campaigns in the Noatak National Preserve. Various thermokarst features and their receiving streams were sampled and characterized. A suite of water chemistry (nutrients, major anions and cations, total suspended sediment) and benthic variables (particulate carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus, and chlorophyll-a) were measured at 6 major sites (2 in 2010 and 4 in 2011). There were additional sites sampled for water chemistry above and below thermokarst features in 2011.

Phenology is the study of recurring plant/animal phenophases. Environmental changes will likely impact phenological events at the species level and above. Most of the phenological changes are unknown at the species level and may have large impacts on natural ecosystems in the future. As part of a long term phenological experiment on forest ecosystems, since spring 2009 phenophases were observed on strategically selected forest species. This experiment is part of the National Phenology Network (USA-NPN).
Weather data from Wine Spring Knob, Nantahala National Forest, North Carolina
This data set contains measurements of air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, wind direction, PAR density, and rainfall from Wine Spring Knob, Nantahala National Forest, NC. Air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and PAR density are measured every 60 seconds with average, minimum, maximum, and discrete top of the hour values saved to the output data table hourly. Wind direction is measured every 60 seconds with the average value saved to the output data table every hour. Hourly rainfall is totalized and a continuous 24 hour rainfall value is calculated. Calculations for dew point, heat index, wind chill, and wind vector are calculated hourly and saved to the output data table.

Hubbard Brook National Land Cover Dataset 1992
The National Land Cover Dataset was compiled from Landsat satellite TM imagery (circa 1992) with a spatial resolution of 30 meters and supplemented by various ancillary data (where available). The analysis and interpretation of the satellite imagery was conducted using very large, sometimes multi-state image mosaics (i.e. up to 18 Landsat scenes). Using a relatively small number of aerial photographs for 'ground truth', the thematic interpretations were necessarily conducted from a spatially-broad perspective. Furthermore, the accuracy assessments (see below) correspond to 'federal regions' which are groupings of contiguous states. Thus, the reliability of the data is greatest at the state or multi-State level. The statistical accuracy of the data is known only for the region. Important Caution Advisory With this in mind, users are cautioned to carefully scrutinize the data to see if they are of sufficient reliability before attempting to use the dataset for larger-scale or local analyses. This evaluation must be made remembering that the NLCD represents conditions in the early 1990s. The New Hampshire portion of the NLCD was created as part of land cover mapping activities for Federal Region I that includes the States of Connecticut, Maine, Vermont, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. The NLCD classification contains 21 different land cover categories with a spatial resolution of 30 meters. The NLCD was produced as a cooperative effort between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) to produce a consistent, land cover data layer for the conterminous U.S. using early 1990s Landsat thematic mapper (TM) data purchased by the Multi-resolution Land Characterization (MRLC) Consortium. Multi-temporal TM-NDVI Vectors at Rodent Webs from the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (1984-1993)
This database contains mean NDVI values for 200 m diameter circles encompassing Rodent Webs on the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), for 21 Landsat TM scene dating from 1984 to 1993. These NDVI vectors were generated as part of cooperative project between the Sevilleta LTER and the Indian Health Service, to study the 1992 Hantavirus outbreak.
Coyote Population Densities at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (1992-2004)
This study measured the population dynamics of coyotes in the grasslands and creosote shrublands of McKenzie Flats, Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge. The study was begun in January, 1992, and continued quarterly each year. Coyotes were sampled via scat counts along the roads of McKenzie Flats during winter, spring, summer, and fall of each year. The entire road transect was 21.5 miles in length. Scat counts over a week period (number of scats/mile/day) in each season along the roads were used to calculate the densities of coyotes (number of coyotes per square kilometer). Results from 1992 to 2002 indicated that autumn was the peak density period of the year, with generally steady declines through the year until the following autumn. Coyote populations appeared to fluctuate seasonally, but remained relatively stable at 0.27 +/- 0.03 (SE) coyotes per km2 during summer periods (this likely represents the "breeding pair" density, during which coyote pairs have set up territories and are raising young, but the pups have not as yet joined the parents in foraging activities).
Rabbit Population Densities at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (1992-2004)
This study measured the population dynamics of black-tail jackrabbits (Lepus californicus) and desert cottontail rabbits (Sylvilagus auduboni) in the grasslands and creosote shrublands of McKenzie Flats, Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge. The study was begun in January, 1992, and continued quarterly each year. Rabbits were sampled via night-time spotlight transect sampling along the roads of McKenzie Flats during winter, spring, summer, and fall of each year. The entire road transect was 21.5 miles in length. Measurements of perpendicular distance of each rabbit from the center of the road were used to estimate densities (number of rabbits per square kilometer) via Program DISTANCE. Results from 1992 to 2002 indicated that spring was the peak density period of the year, with generally steady declines through the year until the following spring. Evidence of a long-term "cycle" (e.g., the 11 year cycle reported for rabbits in the Great Basin Desert) did not appear in the Sevilleta rabbit populations.
