Phenotype images of Gryllus personatus and five resulting morphological measurements
<p class="MsoNormal">Sexual size dimorphism (SSD) and sexual shape dimorphism (SShD) are of interest to evolutionary ecology, but the two phenomena can very easily be conflated by not taking a multivariate approach to measuring size. In our study we draw attention to this problem by measuring four body size dimensions (maxillae span, head width, pronotum length and mean hind femur length) in lab-reared individuals of the badlands cricket (Orthoptera, Gryllinae, <em>Gryllus personatus</em>) and conducting a variety of multivariate analyses to test whether there is SSD and/or SShD.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">We found that males had wider heads and maxillae than females, and females had longer pronota and hind femora than males. This difference in the direction of sexual dimorphism indicates SShD. However, multivariate methods failed to detect SSD, instead confirming that the sexes primarily differ in body shape. We suggest that orthopterists studying sexual dimorphism minimally measure head width, pronotum length and hind femur length as a standard that will allow a more repeatable and generalizable assessment of the prevalence and direction of both SSD and SShD.</p>

<pre>Measurements of the fumarole temperature of the north eastern edge of Vesuvius have been carried out since 1995. The temperature is measured at a depth of 10 cm using a K-type thermocouple. The coordinate of the fumarole is 33T 451833.1m E - 4519224.8m N.</pre> <pre>The monitored fumarole is the one at the highest altitude present on Vesuvius </pre> <p>The fumarole is characterized by low temperatures (59.5 - 75.6 ˚C) and discharge a mixture of air (46% -72%), steam (25% -45%) and CO2 (0.2% -2%). The air is the main component of fumarole, is most likely included in the upper fluids part of the fumarolic ducts found in the highly permeable products of the Vesuvian cone. </p>

A preliminary comparison of a songbird's song repertoire size and other song measures between an urban and a rural site
<p>Characteristics of birdsong, especially minimum frequency, have been shown to vary for some species between urban and rural populations and along urban-rural gradients. However, few urban-rural comparisons of song complexity—and none that we know of based on the number of distinct song types in repertoires—have occurred. Given the potential ability of song repertoire size to indicate bird condition, we primarily sought to determine if number of distinct song types displayed by Song Sparrows (<i>Melospiza melodia</i>) varied between an urban and a rural site. We determined song repertoire size of 24 individuals; 12 were at an urban ('human-dominated') site and 12 were at a rural ('agricultural') site. Then, we compared song repertoire size, note rate, and peak frequency between these sites. Song repertoire size and note rate did not vary between our human-dominated and agricultural sites. Peak frequency was greater at the agricultural site. Our finding that peak frequency was higher at the agricultural site compared to the human-dominated site, contrary to many previous findings pertaining to frequency shifts in songbirds, warrants further investigation. Results of our pilot study suggest that song complexity may be less affected by anthropogenic factors in Song Sparrows than are frequency characteristics. <a name="_Hlk80603521">Additional study, however, will be required to identify particular causal factors related to the trends that we report and to replicate, ideally via multiple urban-rural pairings, so that broader generalization is possible. </a></p>

"Multi-decadal records of shoreline erosion reveal the roles of river delta dynamics, hard protection measures, and other interventions in Eastern Ghana"</p> <p><br> The supplemental material comprises the database "Geodatabase Ghana.mdb" and the MSc thesis by Aleksandra Serwa (Serwa 2017), the results of which built the foundation for the paper.</p> <p>The database contains one layer with all digitized shorelines (HWL_END) as indicated in table 1 of the manuscript, and additional baseline and transect layers that are necessary for the shoreline change analyses with DSAS (Thieler & Danforth 1994). Raw Data for the article: COVID-19 safety measures at the Radiology Unit of a Transplant Institute: the non-COVID-19 patient's confidence with safety procedures
<p><strong>Purpose: </strong>To support the wellbeing of both patients and their families, our aim was to investigate the satisfaction of non-COVID in- and out-patients regarding safety measures implemented at our radiology unit of a transplant institute against COVID infection.</p> <p><strong>Materials and methods: </strong>Over a five-month period, adult patients' feedback was obtained by a questionnaire on the fear of contracting COVID-19 during a radiology examination, the perceived delay in treatment, and the following safety measures implemented: modified schedules to limit the number of patients in the waiting area and to maximize social distancing; assistance by staff when visitors were not admitted; cleaning and disinfection of machines; mask wearing and hand hygiene of staff; and staff advice on hand hygiene and infection control precautions.</p> <p><strong>Results: </strong>Over a five-month period, our preliminary results (387 patients) showed general patient satisfaction (99.1%) with safety measures applied at our radiology unit. Patients were satisfied with distancing and assistance by staff (100%), cleaning and disinfection (91%), mask wearing and hand hygiene of the staff (97%), and staff advice (94%). There was some criticism of the perceived delay in treatment (7.3%) and in the scheduling of the waiting list (5.4%), with 5.4% fearing contracting the virus. Patients' awareness of safety measures and confidence in the hospital preparedness policy was perceived by all interviewers, and 100% appreciated being questioned.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>The feedback given by the non-COVID patient helps to measure the quality in health care, to improve the quality service, and to protect and satisfy more vulnerable patients, also during the COVID-19 pandemic.</p>

A magnetic measurement technique for small rare samples: pre-study for Chang'e-5 returned and other extraterrestrial samples
<p>Standard-size samples are usually used for traditional paleomagnetic study. In some cases, small irregular samples are employed considering their amount and magnetic strength as well as experiment efficiency. With the development of deep space exploration, the demand for studying small and magnetic weak samples is increasing. In this study, we established a magnetic measurement technique for small rare samples. We designed low-background, sample-nondestructive and high-flexibility holders with various materials for different measurements of small samples. With the customized holders, we estimated uncertainty and reliability of magnetic measurements of small specimens from a terrestrial basalt. The results indicate that susceptibility and remanence of small specimens (<em>e.g.</em>, 2-mm cubes) are more affected by measurement position than larger specimens (³ 5 mm), which reminds us to pay special attention to consistency of the small specimen position during series of measurements. Moreover, susceptibility and remanence of small sister specimens (2-mm and 5-mm cubes) are more scattered than those of large ones (cube length ³ 1 cm), mainly due to inhomogeneity of magnetic mineral abundance in the sample. Nevertheless, the average magnetic results of different-size specimens are generally consistent within error, indicating the inhomogeneity of small specimens can be averaged out and demonstrating the reliability of small samples during magnetic measurements. Finally, we tested our measurement system with a lunar meteorite, which mimics the Chang’e-5 returned samples in both size and mineralogy. The main minerals of the meteorite are plagioclase, pyroxene, troilite and kamacite. The IRM normalized paleointensity method recovered the expected laboratory field while the ARM corrected paleointensities are about 2-3 times the expected field, where the latter can be explained by inapplicability of the empirical <em>f</em><em>¢</em> to the meteorite specimens. The ARM and IRM paleointensity calibration factor <em>f</em><em>¢</em> and <em>a</em> of the lunar meteorite were calculated to be 3.89 and 3138 μT, respectively, which provides new constraints for the empirical values. The magnetic results of the lunar meteorite demonstrate the efficiency of our measurement system for small weak samples. This study provides technical support for paleomagnetic study of the Chang'e-5 and other extraterrestrial samples in the future.</p>

<p>We simulate electrostatic wave packets with an ion-acoustic like dispersion relation traveling at different directions in the probe coordinate system. We then set up a model spacecraft and measure the dispersion relation of the simulated wave packets using a method based on spin-plane interferometry. </p>
Data for: Non-invasive measurements of respiration and heart rate across wildlife species using Eulerian Video Magnification of infrared thermal imagery
<p><strong>Background</strong>: An animal's metabolic rate, or energetic expenditure, both impacts and is impacted by interactions with its environment. However, techniques for obtaining measurements of metabolic rate are invasive, logistically difficult, and costly. Red-green-blue (RGB) imaging tools have been used in humans and select domestic mammals to accurately measure heart and respiration rate, as proxies of metabolic rate. The purpose of this study was to investigate if infrared thermography (IRT) coupled with Eulerian video magnification (EVM) would extend the applicability of imaging tools towards measuring vital rates in exotic wildlife species with different physical attributes.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong>: We collected IRT and RGB video of 52 total species (39 mammalian, 7 avian, 6 reptilian) from 36 taxonomic families at zoological institutions and used EVM to amplify subtle changes in temperature associated with blood flow for respiration and heart rate measurements. IRT-derived respiration and heart rates were compared to 'true' measurements determined simultaneously by expansion of the ribcage/nostrils and stethoscope readings, respectively. Sufficient temporal signals were extracted for measures of respiration rate in 36 species (85% success in mammals; 50% success in birds; 100% success in reptiles) and heart rate in 24 species (67% success in mammals; 33% success in birds; 0% success in reptiles) using IRT-EVM. Infrared-derived measurements were obtained with high accuracy (respiration rate, mean absolute error: 1.9 breaths per minute, average percent error: 4.4%; heart rate, mean absolute error: 2.6 beats per minute, average percent error: 1.3%). Thick integument and animal movement most significantly hindered successful validation.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion</strong>: The combination of IRT with EVM analysis provides a non-invasive method to assess individual animal health in zoos, with great potential to monitor wildlife metabolic indices in situ.</p>

If you use these data please cite our publication (<a href="http://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.adf2037">http://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.adf2037</a>).</p> <p>This dataset contains the response of a tissue phantom (Gelatin #2, Humimic) to focused ultrasound (UHEV1, Ultrahaptics). The data is provided as .mat files. The files are separated by scanning path (linear and zigzag trajectories) and scanning speed. Details about our experimental procedure can be found in our publication.</p> <p>IMPORTANT - The data provided is the unprocessed output from a laser doppler vibrometer (Ometron, model 8330). The data is NOT time-aligned and must be reconstructed using the reference signal and the map of the measurement locations.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Line Paths</strong> - Focused ultrasound scanned along a linear path on the surface of the tissue phantom at one of 5 speeds - 2 m/s, 4 m/s, 7 m/s, 11 m/s, and 15 m/s.
