Data for: Inferring spatially-varying animal movement characteristics using a hierarchical continuous-time velocity model

Understanding the spatial dynamics of animal movement is an essential component of maintaining ecological connectivity, conserving key habitats, and mitigating the impacts of anthropogenic disturbance. Altered movement and migratory patterns are often an early warning sign of the effects of environmental disturbance, and a precursor to population declines. Here, we present a hierarchical Bayesian framework based on Gaussian processes for analysing the spatial characteristics of animal movement. At the heart of our approach is a novel covariance kernel that links the spatially-varying parameters of a continuous-time velocity model with GPS locations from multiple individuals. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our framework by first applying it to a synthetic dataset, then by analysing telemetry data from the Serengeti wildebeest migration. Through application of our approach, we are able to identify the key pathways of the wildebeest migration as well as revealing the impacts of environmental features on movement behaviour.

Scalable mixed model approaches for set-based association studies on large-scale categorical data analysis and its application to 450k exome sequencing data in UK Biobank

The ongoing release of large-scale sequencing data in the UK Biobank allows for identifying associations between rare variants and complex traits. SAIGE-GENE+ is a valid approach to conducting set-based association tests for quantitative and binary traits. However, for ordinal categorical phenotypes, applying SAIGE-GENE+ with treating the trait as quantitative or binarizing the trait can cause inflated type I error rates or power loss. In this study, we propose a novel method for rare-variant association tests, POLMM-GENE, in which a proportional odds logistic mixed model was used to characterize ordinal categorical phenotypes while adjusting for sample relatedness. POLMM-GENE fully utilizes the categorical nature of phenotypes and thus can well control type I error rates while remaining powerful. In the analyses of UK Biobank 450k whole exome-sequencing data for 5 ordinal categorical traits, POLMM-GENE identified 54 gene-phenotype associations.

Experimental data for validation of a single-storey flexible double-skin façade system model

Double skin façades are adaptive envelopes aiming at improving building energy use and comfort performance. Their adaptive principle relies on the dynamic management of the cavity’s ventilation flow and the shading device (when available). They can also be integrated with the environmental systems for heating, cooling, and ventilation. In most cases, though, the possible exploitation of the ventilation airflow is not fully enabled, as the adoption of only one or two possible airpath limits the possibility that this façade architecture offers and flexible interaction with the environmental systems is not planned. This work aims to develop, using an existing software tool for building energy simulation, a numerical model of a flexible double-skin façade module capable of fully exploiting the adaptive features of such envelope concept by switching between different cavity ventilation strategies. Leveraging on the Double Glass Facade component available in IDA ICE, a new model for a flexible double-skin façade module was developed, and its performance in replicating the thermophysical behaviours of such a dynamic system has been assessed by comparison with experimental data collected through a dedicated experimental activity using one the outdoor test cells of the TWINS facility in Torino (Italy). The accuracy of the predictions resulted in line with the performance obtained by the Double Glass Facade component to simulate conventional double-skin facades. By establishing a new archetype model to study the performance and optimal integration of a large class of double-skin façade modules, including fully flexible ones, this works demonstrated the possibility of modifying existing models in building energy simulation tools to study unconventional building envelope model solutions such as adaptive façade systems.
