SGS-LTER Genetic Structure of Metapopulation of Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs on the Central Plains Experimental Range and Pawnee National Grassland in Nunn, Colorado, USA 1997-1998
This data package was produced by researchers working on the Shortgrass Steppe Long Term Ecological Research (SGS-LTER) Project, administered at Colorado State University. Long-term datasets and background information (proposals, reports, photographs, etc.) on the SGS-LTER project are contained in a comprehensive project collection within the Digital Collections of Colorado (http://digitool.library.colostate.edu/R/?func=collections&collection_id=3429). Thirteen colonies of black-tailed prairie dogs were studied within a 264-km2 area of the Central Plains Experimental Range and the Pawnee National Grasslands in Weld County, Colorado. Tissue Collection, DNA Extraction, and microsatellite genotype scoring was performed.
SGS-LTER Aboveground NPP on and off US Forest Service Burns on the Pawnee National Grassland, Colorado, USA 1997-2004

Most investigators studying grasslands have assumed that the low standing biomass of the SGS created a system with a low probability of carrying fire, and thus a minimal historical role of fire. Nonetheless, there are years with aboveground biomass equivalent to the mixed grass prairie, and a high frequency of lightening storms. Regardless of the historical role of fire in SGS, there are new questions regarding its utility in managing for the presence of the threatened mountain plover, which only nests in areas of low plant biomass. United States Forest Service, Pawnee National Grassland recently initiated a burning program in the mid 1990s to address questions about using fire to increase plover habitat; we have collected data on some of these plots to investigate the influence of fire on SGS vegetation. Several datasets were created between 1999 and 2004 by SGS-LTER researchers, including measurements of shrub and cactus mortality rates, aboveground net primary production, amounts of litter and standing dead, and aboveground nitrogen dynamics in burned and control plots in the western section of the Pawnee National Grassland. Ground water wells in the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge, 2014-2015
Two wells were established along a transect from salt marsh into pine forest. The lower well (Location: ESVNWR_LOW, WELLID: Lower) is located just inside the forest while the upper well (Location: ESVNWR_UPP, WELLID: Upper) is further in the forest along a line where saplings are currently growing. Below that elevation few saplings survive. Note the UPPER and LOWER well locations after January 7, 2015 are at different locations than in 2014. The 2015 Lower well is at (37.124668,-75.966567) and the 2015 Upper well is at (37.1247505,-75.9663644). Each well is drilled to a depth of approximately 1.5 meters. SWS CTD-Diver sensors are hung by a line in the well and collect temperature, specific conductivity and water head (water table elevation) data once every hour. The dataset spans January 07, 2014 to January 14, 2016.
Tree Ring Widths for Loblolly Pine in the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge
Width of tree rings were measured on 25 Loblolly Pine trees in the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife refuge (37.125153-deg N, 75.965134-deg W.) to the nearest 0.001 mm.
Topographic survey in the forest-marsh interface of Eastern Shore National Wildlife Refuge
We collected RTK GPS points in the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge near the tip of the Delmarva Peninsula. Survey points have the UTM 18N Easting and Northing coordinates, the NAVD88 elevation in meters, an identifier for the site ("hollow" or "hillslope") and a point code ("ALIVE" for mature live trees, "DEAD" for dead trees, and "SAPLING" for young trees).
Tree ages and Locations on the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge
Cores were taken from live trees in the hillslope site in the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge. "TreeAges.csv" has the ID of the tree, the UTM 18N Easting and Northing and the NAVD88 Elevation (these are identical to the hillslope "ALIVE" points in the topographic surveys - dataset VCR19288), and the year that the tree was established from the dendrochronology analysis. Complete methods for the dendrochronology analysis can be found in Fernandes et al. (2018) Declining radial growth response of coastal forests to hurricanes and nor'easters. JGR: Biogeosciences. (https://doi.org/10.1002/2017JG004125) Location and elevation data were collected using a real-time kinematic (RTK) Global Positioning System (GPS) unit.

Carabids data of Pterostichus flavofemoratus and Carabus depressus in the Gran Paradiso National Park (2006, 2007, 2012, 2013)
<p>Understanding risks to biodiversity requires predictions of the spatial distribution of species adapting to changing ecosystems and, to that end, earth observations integrating field surveys prove essential as they provide key figures for assessing landscape-wide biodiversity scenarios. Here, we develop, and apply to a relevant case study, a method suited to merge earth/field observations with spatially explicit stochastic metapopulation models to study the near-term ecological dynamics of target species in complex terrains. Our framework incorporates the use of species distribution models for a reasoned estimation of the initial presence of the target species, and accounts for imperfect and incomplete detection of the species presence in the study area. It also uses a metapopulation fitness function derived from earth observation data subsuming the ecological niche of the target species. This framework is applied to contrast occupancy of two species of carabids (<em>Pterostichus flavofemoratus</em>, <em>Carabus depressus</em>) observed in the context of a large ecological monitoring program carried out within the Gran Paradiso National Park (GPNP, Italy). Results suggest that the proposed framework may indeed exploit the hallmarks of spatially explicit ecological approaches and of remote Earth observations. The model reproduces well the observed <em>in-situ</em> data. Moreover, it projects in the near-term the two species' presence both in space and time, highlighting the features of the metapopulation dynamics of colonization and extinction, and their expected trends within verifiable timeframes.</p>
Educational and workforce development through creation of programs in transportation to generate future careers for our students in Navajo Nation region
<p>Navajo Technical University (NTU) in New Mexico, has made a partnership with the Tran-SET regional center at Louisiana State University, LSU. We have provided learning and training the Native American students in transportation-related Industries to some of STEM students at NTU through these partnerships opportunities.<br> The program was designed and supported by Native American students from high school to STEM undergraduate students. The program was implemented accordingly with four main components: (1). Selected eligible and interested<br> Native American student to paid summer internships to the field and facilities of transportations industries and participate in research summer at LSU. (2). Directed the students to the transportation-related workshops and conducting at research NTU and they provided with and prepared them with the necessary background in transportation fields. (3). Several students were selected to research during the academic semester related to the field particularly, analyzing the causes of workforce shortages in the transportation industry. (4). We are planning to create and offer transportation certificate programs at NTU to train and expose the Native American students in transportation fields in the future if we get additional funding. We also proposed projects and conducted significant outreach activities in some of the local high schools and colleges. If successful we are planning to develop online courses, which would be provided for free to the Native American universities across the nation in order to make this program more sustainable.<br> Also, we are expected and planning to support 15-20 undergraduate and high school students per year through this partnership program. Other activities undertaken by NTU were the collaboration with different research, education, and outreach projects related to transportations undertaken by the NTU faculty partners. Some of the NTU STEM and pre-engineering students participated in the summer research internship programs, educational, laboratory, site visits as well as exposing students to the most technically-advanced Material research laboratories in Region 6 as well as state-of-the-art facilities at LSU. Some NTU students worked with local industries and agencies to enhance workforce development in the region.</p>

Effects of protected areas on welfare of local households: the case of Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya
<ol> <li>Protected areas are vital for biodiversity conservation although some have been criticized for not providing adequate socio-economic benefits to local people. However, empirical studies on socio-economic impacts of protected areas that control for confounding factors are rare.</li> <li>Here, we assessed the potential impacts of Maasai Mara National Reserve in South-Western Kenya on welfare (indicated by levels of income, consumption, and assets) of, and poverty incidence among 423 randomly selected local households. We used descriptive statistics to summarize demographic and socio-economic statuses of the households. Then, we estimated effects of the protected area on welfare of the households using ordinary least - squares regression model and entropy balancing.</li> <li>The protected area did not have any significant effect on welfare of, and poverty levels among the households. Households that lived within a 5 km radius of the protected area boundary incurred significantly higher crop destruction and livestock depredation losses than households that lived 5 - 25 km from the boundary. Nevertheless, majority of the households held positive views about the protected area due to direct and indirect benefits that they had already gained or expected to gain from it in the future.</li> <li>These results suggest that interventions are needed to reduce losses caused by wildlife in the protected area and improve its social and economic benefits to the local households.</li> </ol>

Stream Temperature Dataset, Fall 2014 - Summer 2015, Rocky Mountian National Park, Colorado, USA
<p>Dataset describing stream temperatures at 18 sites across two adjacent stream networks located in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, USA. Temperature data collected with Onset Pendant waterproof loggers. DateTime format is UTC-7, with no daylight savings time. Temperature units are degrees C. Status column indicates the assumed location of the logger (Active= in water, Inactive = out of water). Elevation, UAA (Upstream Accumulated Area), X, and Y describe characteristics of the logger site. Lake_fraction column describes the fraction of the area draining to a site which is estimated to pass through one or more lakes, and UAA_weighted_mean_lake_elevation describes the mean elevation of upstream lakes, weighted by the UAA of each lake.
