Keppel's Column
3D model of Keppel's Column, Rotherham (UK). The column was completed in 1780, and commemorates the honourable acquittal of Admiral Keppel following his court-martial, after failing to engage the French off Brest in 1778. It stands on a prominent hill to the south of the Wentworth Estate, and at 35 metres high is the tallest of the four Wentworth follies. The monument is now in a dangerous condition and is kept locked. PFAS and nitrate leaching from undisturbed soil columns receiving biosolids and mitigation potential of biochar
<p>Land application of biosolids recycles nutrients and reduces the need for commercial fertilizers. However, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) may leach from biosolids, resulting in groundwater contamination. We measured PFAS leaching from land-applied biosolids through undisturbed soil column trials and evaluated the treatment potential of amending biosolids with biochar. Synthetic rainfall was applied weekly to undisturbed soil columns from four regions in Wisconsin, including two fields with a history of biosolids application, simulating annual precipitation. The treatments consisted of a control (soil only), soil amended with biosolids, and soil receiving a mixture of biosolids and biochar. Concentrations of total PFAS in leachate were significantly affected by soil location and site history, while only long chain PFAS concentrations were significantly affected by biosolids/biochar treatments. One-time application of biosolids may result in groundwater contamination, as PFAS concentrations in leachate exceeded the local groundwater standard (a combined perfluorooctanoic acid and perflourooctanesulfonic acid groundwater concentration of 20 ng L<sup>-1</sup>) at three locations. Legacy PFAS may pose a risk to human health years after biosolid application, as a control column from a site with an intensive history of biosolid application exceeded PFAS groundwater standards. Incorporation of biochar with biosolids during application mitigated PFAS (specifically from soils with elevated leaching potential) through significant reductions of C7 – C10 perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids and C4, C6 – C8 perfluorosulfonic acids (40 to 64% reduction in measured Σ28 PFAS). Biochar may facilitate sustainable use of biosolids through mitigation of long-chain PFAS leaching, pending long-term field evaluation. </p>
Data from: Dynamic models for impact-initiated stress waves through snow columns
<p>The objective of this research is to model snow's response to dynamic, impact loading. Two constitutive relationships are considered: elastic and Maxwell-viscoelastic. These material models are applied to laboratory experiments consisting of 1000 individual impacts across 22 snow column configurations. The columns are 60 cm tall with a 30 cm by 30 cm cross-section. The snow ranges in density from 135-428 kg m<sup>-3</sup> and is loaded with both short-duration (~1 ms) and long-duration (~10 ms) impacts. The Maxwell-viscoelastic model more accurately describes snow's response because it contains a mechanism for energy dissipation, which the elastic model does not. Furthermore, the ascertained model parameters show a clear dependence on impact duration; shorter duration impacts resulted in higher wave speeds and greater damping coefficients. The stress wave's magnitude is amplified when it hits a stiffer material because of the positive interference between incident and reflected waves. This phenomenon is observed in the laboratory and modeled with the governing equations.</p>

Conserved patterns and locomotor-related evolutionary constraints in the hominoid vertebral column
<div> <div> <div> <p>The evolution of the hominoid lineage is characterized by pervasive homoplasy, notably in regions such as the vertebral column, which plays a central role in body support and locomotion. Few isolated and fewer associated vertebrae are known for most fossil hominoid taxa, but identified specimens indicate potentially high levels of convergence in terms of both form and number. Homoplasy thus complicates attempts to identify the anatomy of the last common ancestor of hominins and other taxa and stymies reconstructions of evolutionary scenarios. One way to clarify the role of homoplasy is by investigating constraints via phenotypic integration, which assesses covariation among traits, shapes evolutionary pathways, and itself evolves in response to selection. We assessed phenotypic integration and evolvability across the subaxial (cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral) vertebral column of macaques (<em>n</em> = 96), gibbons (<em>n</em> = 77), chimpanzees (<em>n</em> = 92), and modern humans (<em>n</em> = 151). We found a mid-cervical cluster that may have shifted cranially in hominoids, a persistent thoracic cluster that is most marked in chimpanzees, and an expanded lumbosacral cluster in hominoids that is most expanded in gibbons. Our results highlight the highly conserved nature of the vertebral column. Taxa appear to exploit existing patterns of integration and ontogenetic processes to shift, expand, or reduce cluster boundaries. Gibbons appear to be the most highly derived taxon in our sample, possibly in response to their highly specialized locomotion.</p> </div> </div> </div>

This benchmark evaluates systems that match table columns to semantic types from the <a href="http://wikidata.dbpedia.org/services-resources/ontology">DBpedia</a> and <a href="https://schema.org/docs/schemas.html">Schema.org</a> ontologies. Monotonic loading performance of GFRP beam-column joints connected with slotted–hole bolts
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Nowadays there are many types of glass fiber reinforced polymer(GFRP) composite beam and column joints, such as standard connection, bolted through connection, angle steel connection, tube connection and so on, most of which connected by high-strength bolts with round holes. In this paper, monotonic loading tests on GFRPcomposite beam and column joints connected by slotted-hole bolts were conducted. To compare the performance of different joints, two groups of specimens were used in this study; one of group was the beam-column joints connected by the angle steel, and other group was connected by the tube connection. Specimens with different bolt holes, side plate reinforcement condition, and different bolt pre-tightening forces were studied. Failure modes, bending moment curves, plastic rotation, and yield stiffness of the two groups of joints were compared. Results showed thatthe ultimate bending moment bearing capacity of specimens with side plates could be increased by 30%. Under the same conditions, the bearing capacity of the tube joints was about 10% larger than that of the angle steel joints. Although the bearing capacity of joints was not increased by using slotted holes, plastic rotation capacity and yield stiffness of joints with slotted-hole bolts were 1.1 times than that of the ordinary round-hole bolts joints.</span></p>

<p>This dataset contains water column data collected via CTD/rosette profiles taken on the SCOPE Gradients 4 cruise, averaged at every Niskin bottle trip. The SCOPE-Gradients program is designed to test conceptual and mathematical models of biogeochemical organization across the transition zone between different ecosystems. This dataset was collected on the R/V Thompson during the Gradients 4 cruise which departed from San Diego, CA and ended in Honolulu, HI. A transect was performed on the 140 degree longitude line from roughly 19 degrees N to 2.5 degrees S before heading to Honolulu.</p>

Evolutionary rates and shape variation along the anuran vertebral column with attention to phylogeny, body size, and ecology
<p><span>The vertebral column is critical to a vertebrate species' flexibility and skeletal support, making vertebrae a clear target for selection. Anur</span><span>ans (frogs and toads) have a unique, truncated vertebral column that appears constrained to provide axial rigidity for efficient jumping. However, no study has examined how presacral vertebrae shape varies among anuran species at the macroevolutionary scale nor how intrinsic (developmental and phylogenetic) and extrinsic (ecological) factors may have influenced vertebrae shape evolution. We used microCT scans and phylogenetic comparative methods to examine the vertebrae of hundreds of anuran species that vary in body size as well as adult and larval ecology. We found variation in shape and evolutionary rates among anuran vertebrae, dispelling any notion that trunk vertebrae evolve uniformly. We discovered the highest evolutionary rates in the cervical vertebrae and in the more caudal trunk vertebrae. We found little evidence for selection pressures related to adult or larval ecology affecting vertebrae evolution, but we did find body size was highly associated with vertebrae shape and microhabitat (mainly burrowing) affected those allometric relationships. Our results provide an interesting comparison to vertebrae evolution in other clades and a jumping-off point for studies of anuran vertebrae evolution and development.</span></p>
