[Data] Real-time monitoring and quality assurance for laser-based directed energy deposition: integrating co-axial imaging and self-supervised deep learning framework

<p>The experimental setup utilized a co-axial color Charged Couple Device (CCD) camera, integrated into the laser deposition head. This camera operates at a frame rate of 30 frames per second and captures the morphology of the process area. The captured images consist of three RGB channels with a 640&thinsp;&times;&thinsp;480 pixels resolution. To enable the camera to capture the radiation from the process zone, a beam splitter is installed on Precitec's laser applicator head. An optical notch filter within the 650&ndash;675 nm range also blocks the laser wavelengths.</p> <p>The dataset consists of four categories that covers the process map of DED process [.rar file].<br>The dataset consist of around 48,000 images that are labelled into 4 categories [P1-P2-P3-P4]. The images correspond to DED process zone captured co-axially<br>The categories are function of linear laser energy deposited. The folder is already split into Train and Test.</p>

Integrating data from different taxonomic resolutions to better estimate community alpha diversity

<p>Integrated distribution models (IDMs), in which datasets with different properties are analysed together, are becoming widely used to model species distributions and abundance in space and time. To date, the IDM literature has focused on technical and statistical issues, such as the precision of parameter estimates and mitigation of biases arising from unstructured data sources. However, IDMs have an unrealised potential to estimate ecological properties that could not be properly derived from the source datasets if analysed separately. We present a model that estimates community alpha diversity metrics by integrating one species-level dataset of presence-absence records with a co-located dataset of group-level counts (i.e. lacking information about species identity). We illustrate the ability of community IDMs to capture the true alpha diversity through simulation studies and apply the model to data from the UK Pollinator Monitoring Scheme, to describe spatial variation in the diversity of solitary bees, bumblebees and hoverflies. The simulation and case studies showed that the proposed IDM produced more precise estimates of the community diversity than the single models, and the analysis of the real dataset further showed that the alpha diversity estimates from the IDM were averages of the single models. Our findings also revealed that IDMs had a higher prediction accuracy for all the insect groups in most cases, with this performance linked to the information provided by a data source into the IDM.</p>

Data from: Genomic integrity of Phyciodes butterfly species in a region of contact (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae)

<p>Crescent butterflies of the <em>Phyciodes tharos </em>group have a long-standing reputation for taxonomic difficulty.<em> </em>We assessed species boundaries in the <em>P. tharos </em>group using genome-wide SNP data, focusing on sampling in western Canada where four species (<em>P. tharos</em>, <em>P. cocyta</em>, <em>P. pulchella,</em> and <em>P. batesii</em>) have classically been recognized. Phylogenetic and cluster-based analyses confirm that there are indeed four species based on the maintenance of genomic integrity in the presence of occasional hybridization and low levels of gene flow. Mitochondrial COI does not consistently distinguish species, with haplotypes extensively shared between species. Here, we provide data matrices and tree files from the phylogenetic and cluster-based analyses.</p>

Data from: ESCRT-III-dependent adhesive and mechanical changes are triggered by a mechanism detecting alteration of Septate Junction integrity in Drosophila epithelial cells

<p><span>Barrier functions of proliferative epithelia are constantly challenged by mechanical and chemical constraints. How epithelia respond to and cope with disturbances of barrier functions to allow tissue integrity maintenance is poorly characterized. Cellular junctions play an important role in this process and intracellular traffic contribute to their homeostasis. Here, we reveal that, in <em>Drosophila</em> pupal <em>notum</em>, alteration of the bi- or tricellular septate junctions (SJs) triggers a mechanism with two prominent outcomes. On one hand, there is an increase in the levels of E-cadherin, F-Actin and non-muscle Myosin II in the plane of adherens junctions. On </span><span>the other hand, β-integrin/Vinculin-positive cell contacts are reinforced along the lateral and basal membranes. We found that the weakening of SJ integrity, caused by the depletion of bi- or tricellular SJ components, alters ESCRT-III/Vps32/Shrub distribution, reduces degradation, and instead favours recycling of SJ components, an effect that extends to other recycled transmembrane protein cargoes including Crumbs, its effector β-Heavy Spectrin</span><span> Karst, and </span><span>β-integrin</span><span>. We propose a mechanism by which epithelial cells, upon sensing alterations of the septate junction</span><span>,</span><span> reroute the function of Shrub to adjust the balance of degradation/recycling of junctional cargoes and thereby compensate for barrier junction defects to maintain epithelial integrity.</span></p>

Dispersal patterns in black howler monkeys (Alouatta pigra): Integrating multi-year demographic and molecular data

<p>Dispersal is a fundamental process in the functioning of animal societies as it regulates the degree to which closely related individuals are spatially concentrated. A species' dispersal pattern can be complex as it emerges from individuals' decisions shaped by the cost-benefit tradeoffs associated with either remaining in the natal group or dispersing. Given the potential complexity, combining long-term demographic information with molecular data can provide important insights into dispersal patterns of a species. Based on a 15-year study that integrates multi-year demographic data on six groups with longitudinal and cross-sectional genetic sampling of 20 groups (N=169 individuals, N=21 polymorphic microsatellite loci), we describe the various dispersal strategies of male and female black howler monkeys (<i>Alouatta pigra</i>) inhabiting Palenque National Park, Mexico. Genetically confirmed dispersal events (N=21 of 59 males; N=6 of 65 females), together with spatial autocorrelation analyses revealed that the dispersal pattern of black howlers is bisexual with strong sex-biases in both dispersal rate (males disperse more often than females) and dispersal distance (females disperse farther than males). Observational and genetic data confirm that both males and females can successfully immigrate into established groups, as well as form new groups with other dispersing individuals. Additionally, both males and females may disperse singly, as well as in pairs, and both may also disperse secondarily. Overall, our findings suggest multiple dispersal trajectories for black howler males and females, and longer multi-year studies are needed to unravel which demographic, ecological, and social factors underlie individuals' decisions about whether to disperse and which dispersal options to take.</p>

Data from: Thyroid hormone tinkering elicits integrated phenotypic changes potentially explaining rapid adaptation of color vision in cichlid fish

Vision is critical for most vertebrates, including fish. One challenge that aquatic habitats pose is the high variability in spectral properties depending on depth, turbidity and composition of the water body. By altering opsin gene expression and chromophore usage, cichlid fish modulate visual sensitivities to maximize sensory input from the available light in their respective habitat. Thyroid hormone (TH) has been proposed to play a role in governing adaptive diversification in visual sensitivity in Nicaraguan Midas cichlids, which evolved in less than ~3,100 generations. As suggested by indirect measurements of TH levels (i.e., expression of deiodinases), populations adapted to short wavelength light in clear lakes have lower TH levels than ones inhabiting turbid lakes enriched in long-wavelength light. We experimentally manipulated TH levels by exposing two-week-old Midas cichlids to exogenous TH or a TH-inhibitor and measured opsin gene expression and chromophore usage (via cyp27c1 expression). Whereas exogenous TH induces long-wavelength sensitivity by changing opsin gene expression and chromophore usage in a concerted manner, TH-inhibited fish exhibit a visual phenotype with sensitivities shifted to shorter-wavelengths. Tinkering with TH levels in eyes results in concerted phenotypic changes that can provide a rapid mechanism of adaptation to novel light environments. --

Data used in: Social status does not predict in-camp integration among egalitarian hunter-gatherer men

<p>In the last few decades, there has been much research regarding the importance of social prestige in shaping the social structure of small-scale societies. While recent studies show that social prestige may have important health consequences, little is known about the extent to which prestige translates into actual in-person interactions and proximity, even though the level of integration into such real-life social networks has been shown to have important health consequences. Here, we determine the extent to which two different domains of social prestige, popularity (being perceived as a friend by others) and hunting reputation (being perceived as a good hunter), translate into GPS-derived in- and out-of-camp proximity networks in a group of egalitarian hunter-gatherer men, the Hadza. We show that popularity and hunting reputation differ in the extent to which they are translated into time spent physically close to each other. Moreover, our findings suggest that in-camp proximity networks, which are commonly applied in studies of small-scale societies, do not show the full picture of Hadza men's social preferences. While men are in camp, neither popularity nor hunting reputation is associated with being central in the proximity network; however, when out of camp, Hadza men who are popular are more integrated in the proximity networks while men with better hunting reputations are less integrated. Overall, our findings suggest that, in order to fully understand social preferences among hunter-gatherers, both in-camp and out-of-camp proximity networks should be considered.  </p>

Data from: Applicability of artificial neural networks to integrate socio-technical drivers of buildings recovery following extreme wind events

<p>The data provided and the associated MATLAB code were used to build an Artificial Neural Network Model to capture the reconstruction (recovery) of various buildings subjected to tornado events in the State of Missouri. The ANN model utilizes relevant tornado, societal demographic, and structural data to determine a building's resulting damage state from an extreme wind event and the subsequent recovery time. Abstract for the publication is as follows:</p> <p>In a companion article, previously published in Royal Society Open Science, the authors used Graph Theory to evaluate artificial neural network models for potential social and building variables interactions contributing to building wind damage. The results promisingly highlighted the importance of social variables in modeling damage as opposed to the traditional approach of solely considering physical characteristics of a building. Within this update article, the same methods are used to evaluate two different artificial neural networks for modelling building repair and/or rebuild (recovery) time. In contrast to the damage models, the recovery models consider (A) primarily social variables and then (B) introduce structural variables. These two models are then evaluated using centrality and shortest path concepts of Graph Theory as well as validated against data from the 2011 Joplin Tornado. The results of this analysis do not show the same distinctions as were found in the analysis of the damage models from the companion article. The overarching lack of discernible and consistent differences in the recovery models suggests that social variables that drive damage are not necessarily contributions to recovery. The differences also serve to reinforce that machine learning methods are best used when the contributing variables are already well understood.</p>

MIntO: a Modular and Scalable Pipeline for Microbiome Metagenomic and Metatranscriptomic Meta-omics Data Integration

<p>To illustrate the use of MIntO, a set of 91 human fecal metagenomes from the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Multi&rsquo;omics Database was selected (IBDMDB).&nbsp;We selected six participants diagnosed as non-IBD (P6018 (nIBD1), M2072 (nIBD2)); Crohn&rsquo;s disease (H4006 (CD1) and H4020 (CD2)); and ulcerative colitis (H4019 (UC1) and H4035 (UC2)) that were followed for one year each.&nbsp;</p> <p>Here, we present the results from the <em>genome-based assembly-dependent</em>&nbsp;mode, where we used 91 metagenomic high-quality reads<strong> </strong>to recover 163&nbsp;high-quality MAGs,&nbsp;which constituted a set of non-redundant genomes.</p>
