First ISCCP Regional Experiment (FIRE) Cirrus Phase II Environmental & Technology Laboratory (ETL) Doppler Radar Images (FIRE_CI2_ETL_RADAR)
The First ISCCP Regional Experiments have been designed to improve data products and cloud/radiation parameterizations used in general circulation models (GCMs). Specifically, the goals of FIRE are (1) to seek the basic understanding of the interaction of physical processes in determining life cycles of cirrus and marine stratocumulus systems and the radiative properties of these clouds during their life cycles and (2) to investigate the interrelationships between ISCCP data, GCM parameterizations, and higher space and time resolution cloud data. To-date, four intensive field-observation periods were planned and executed: a cirrus IFO (October 13 - November 2, 1986); a marine stratocumulus IFO off the southwestern coast of California (June 29 - July 20, 1987); a second cirrus IFO in southeastern Kansas (November 13 - December 7, 1991); and a second marine stratocumulus IFO in the eastern North Atlantic Ocean (June 1 - June 28, 1992). Each mission combined coordinated satellite, airborne, and surface observations with modeling studies to investigate the cloud properties and physical processes of the cloud systems. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Environmental Technology Laboratory (ETL) Doppler radar was used during the Fire Cirrus II experiment in Coffeyville, Kansas to document the structural, kinematic, microphysical and turbulent properties of climatically important cirrus cloud systems. Data were collected from November 13, 1991 through November 29, 1991.

Chemical and isotopic data of laboratory batch and column experiments using industrial wine wastes to biostimulate denitrification

Nitrate and nitrite are common pollutants in wastewater and agricultural runoff, and their removal is crucial to mitigate environmental impacts. The study focused on utilising sustainable and cost-effective carbon sources to enhance denitrification performance in nitrate-contaminated field water. Laboratory batch and column experimental work was carried out aimed at investigating the feasibility of using wine wastes as electron donors in a feasibility study to biostimulate biological denitrification. Two industrial wine wastes were collected from local wineries (lias and vinico). The samples were characterized for their organic carbon content to determine their suitability as electron donors. Two sets of denitrification reactors were set up, consisting of a series of crystal Pyrex® reactors. Each reactor contained nitrate-contaminated water, and gravel from the field, which was covered with aluminium crimp caps with septa and purged with Ar to create an anaerobic environment. Each series of reactors were biostimulated with the respective wine waste. Control reactors without wine wastes were also prepared for comparison. Lias was successful in removing nitrates in the batch experiment and was subsequently used in the column experiment to test its potential in a continuous flow system.

The chemical and isotopic results of the two sets of parallel batch experiments and the column experiment are presented in this data.

A geochemical model was performed to simulate the experimental results for the future field application using the Phreeqc and the Gibbstudio software and iso.dat and the wateq4f databases.

Dataset of laboratory experiments on disks settling through density transition and wake evolution

Dataset was collected in laboratory experiments on the settling of solid disks in a stratified liquid column with a density transition. Four types of disks, with diameter 2 mm and 3 mm, varying in aspect ratio were considered. Experiments were carried out in a rectangular transparent tank (0.10 m × 0.10 m x 0.50 m) filled with two-layered liquid - aqueous solution of NaCl. A non-linear density transition formed between the two layers of homogeneous density. A sequence of reorientations and unsteady settling of disks translating through the density transition was observed. Settling behaviour of particles was recorded using cameras with macro lenses to measure the position, reorientation and settling velocity of disks. Moreover, a dye visualization was used to observe and measure the evolution of wake behind the disk settling through the density transition.

The analysis of results and data visualizations are presented in Mrokowska MM, 2020: Influence of pycnocline on settling behaviour of non-spherical particle and wake evolution. Scientific Reports 10:20595, DOI 10.1038/s41598-020-77682-y.

Contributions of rock mass structure and fragmentation to the emplacement of rock avalanches: insights from laboratory experiments

This data set provides a movie of D1 recorded using high-speed camera during experiments, which can be useful for a thorough understanding of the evolutions of internal rock damages The calculated data of area covered by deposit, the travel distance of the center of mass on the horizontal plane, the travel distance of sliding mass on the horizontal plane, and the relative breakage ratio are also provided. In addition, we also provided the data of velocity profiles of blocks with different structures at t=0.1 s from x=0 m to x = 0.8 m.

Movie S1.
