Composite amine mixed matrix membranes for highpressure CO2-CH4 separation: synthesis, characterization and performance evaluation

<p>The key challenge in composite mixed matrix membrane (MMMs) synthesis is the incompatible membrane fabrication using porous support in the dry-wet phase inversion technique. The key objective of this research to synthesis thin composite ternary (amine) mixed matrix membranes on microporous support by incorporating 10 wt. % of carbon molecular sieve (CMS) and 5-15 wt. % of diethanolamine (DEA) in polyethersulfone (PES) dope solution for the separation of carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2</sub>) from methane (CH<sub>4</sub>). The developed membranes were evaluated for their morphological structure, thermal and mechanical stabilities, functional groups, as well as the CO<sub>2</sub>-CH<sub>4</sub> separation performance at high pressure (10-30 bar). The results showed that the developed membranes have asymmetric structure, and mechanically strong at 30 bar. A new class of PES/CMS/DEA composite MMMs exhibited improved gas permeance compared to pure PES composite polymeric membrane. The permselectivty of CO<sub>2</sub>/CH<sub>4</sub> enhanced from 8.15 to 16.04 at 15 wt.% of DEA at 30 bar pressure. The performance of amine composite MMMs is theoretically predicted using a modified Maxwell model. The predictions were in good agreement with experimental data after applying the optimized values with AARE % = ~ less 2 % and R<sup>2</sup> = 0.99.</p>

Data from: Evaluating predictive performance of statistical models explaining wild bee abundance in a mass-flowering crop

<p>Wild bee populations are threatened by current agricultural practices in many parts of the world, which may put pollination services and crop yields at risk. Loss of pollination services can potentially be predicted by models that link bee abundances with landscape-scale land-use, but there is little knowledge on the degree to which these statistical models are transferable across time and space. This study assesses the transferability of models for wild bee abundance in a mass-flowering crop across space (from one region to another) and across time (from one year to another). The models used existing data on bumblebee and solitary bee abundance in winter oilseed rape fields, together with high-resolution land-use crop-cover and semi-natural habitats data, from studies conducted in five different regions located in four countries (Sweden, Germany, Netherlands, and the UK), in three different years (2011, 2012, 2013). We developed a hierarchical model combining all studies and evaluated the transferability using cross-validation. We found that both the landscape-scale cover of mass-flowering crops and permanent semi-natural habitats, including grasslands and forests, are important drivers of wild bee abundance in all regions. However, while the negative effect of increasing mass-flowering crops on the density of the pollinators is consistent between studies, the direction of the effect of semi-natural habitat is variable between studies. The transferability of these statistical models is limited, especially across regions, but also across time. Our study demonstrates the limits of using statistical models in conjunction with widely available land-use crop-cover classes for extrapolating pollinator density across years and regions, likely in part because input variables such as cover of semi-natural habitats poorly capture variability in pollinator resources between regions and years.</p>

Data from: Optimized modelling and application of exhaust gas recirculation performance evaluation of turbocharged diesel engine

Aimed at the problem of turbocharged diesel engine EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) performance evaluation and optimal EGR rate determination, especially in some cases with poor data because of the limit of conditions, an optimized multi-objective grey decision method based on grey theory and entropy weight is proposed. The internal combustion pressure ,fuel consumption rate, NOX ,CO and smoke degree were selected as the decision target, and the initial decision-making model was established based on traditional grey situation theory. According to the characteristics and optimization requirements of EGR, The optimal compromise between combustion and emission performance is proposed to transform into the decision-making target weight problem , then a subjective weight optimization method based on expert scoring and grey relational analysis is proposed. In addition, the entropy weight method was used to solve the subjective and objective weight vector and the optimized multi-objective grey situation decision making model was established, which can not weaken the human error of subjective empowerment, but also fully explore the intrinsic objective relationship of the evaluation index parameters. At last, an optimization simulation platform for EGR performance evaluation based MATLB/GUIDE is designed and established. The results show that the optimization simulation platform can effectively improve the efficiency of simulation calculation, which is more convenient for practical engineering applications; the optimized method can successfully solve the EGR performance evaluation and optimal EGR rate determination under different working conditions, the decision result is reasonable and consistent with the prevailing principle of the EGR determining, which provide a new research ideas for EGR performance optimization.

Data from: Evaluating internal model strength and performance of myoelectric prosthesis control strategies

Ongoing developments in myoelectric prosthesis control have provided prosthesis users with an assortment of control strategies that vary in reliability and performance. Many studies have focused on improving performance by providing feedback to the user, but have overlooked the effect of this feedback on internal model development, which is key to improving long-term performance. In this work, the strength of internal models developed for two commonly used myoelectric control strategies: raw control with raw feedback (using a regression-based approach), and filtered control with filtered feedback (using a classifier-based approach), were evaluated using two psychometric measures: trial-by-trial adaptation and just-noticeable-difference. The performance of both strategies was also evaluated using a Schmidt's style target acquisition task. Results obtained from 24 able-bodied subjects showed that although filtered control with filtered feedback had better short-term performance in path efficiency (p &lt; 0.05), raw control with raw feedback resulted in stronger internal model development (p &lt; 0.05), which may lead to better long-term performance. Despite inherent noise in the control signals of the regression controller, these findings suggest that rich feedback associated with regression control may be used to improve human understanding of the myoelectric control system.

Data from: Evaluation of demographic history and neutral parameterization on the performance of Fst outlier tests

FST outlier tests are a potentially powerful way to detect genetic loci under spatially divergent selection. Unfortunately, the extent to which these tests are robust to non-equilibrium demographic histories has been under-studied. We developed a landscape-genetics simulator to test the effects of isolation by distance (IBD) and range expansion on FST outlier methods. We evaluated the two most commonly used methods for the identification of FST outliers (FDIST2 and BayeScan, which assume samples are evolutionarily independent) and two recent methods (FLK and Bayenv2, which estimate and account for evolutionary non-independence). Parameterization with a set of neutral loci ("neutral parameterization") always improved the performance of FLK and Bayenv2, while neutral parameterization caused FDIST2 to actually perform worse in the cases of IBD or range expansion. BayeScan was improved when the prior odds on neutrality was increased, regardless of the true odds in the data. On their best performance, however, the widely-used methods had high false-positive rates for IBD and range expansion and were outperformed by methods that accounted for evolutionary non-independence. In addition, default settings in FDIST2 and BayeScan resulted in many false positives under balancing selection. However, all methods did very well if a large set of neutral loci is available to create empirical p-values. We conclude that in species that exhibit IBD or have undergone range expansion, many of the published FST outliers based on FDIST2 and BayeScan are probably false positives, but FLK and Bayenv2 show great promise for accurately identifying loci under spatially-divergent selection.
