Data for: Sierra Nevada mixed-conifer regeneration response to repeated burning varies by species
<p>Fire-exclusion has acted as a major perturbation on dry conifer forests in the western U.S., increasing tree density and, in mixed-conifer forests, the dominance of shade-tolerant species. Restoration efforts aim to reverse these effects by reducing stand density, restoring relative proportions of tree species, and reintroducing recurrent fire, but there are limited long-term data on the effects of repeated burning on tree regeneration. We analyzed two decades of seedling and overstory data from the Teakettle Experimental Forest in the southern Sierra Nevada, California, USA to determine how thinning and repeated burning affect seedling establishment and overstory recruitment. The treatments included three levels of thinning (no thin, understory thin, overstory thin) crossed with two levels of burning (burn, no burn). Treatments were replicated three times in 4 ha treatment units. Seedlings were surveyed at gridpoints within the treatment units for the pre-treatment period (1999-2000), following the first-entry burn (2004-2006), at 10 years post-treatment (2011-2012), and before (2016-2017) and after (2018-2020) the second-entry burn. We analyzed seedling response using mixed models. Across treatments, pine seedling densities remained much lower than shade-tolerant seedling densities. We found that repeated burns led to modest increases in sugar pine (<em>Pinus lambertiana</em>) and substantial increases in incense-cedar (<em>Calocedrus decurrens</em>) seedling densities four years post-burn. No significant differences in seedling densities among repeated burning treatments were detected for Jeffrey pine (<em>P. jeffreyi</em>) or white fir (<em>Abies concolor</em>). We used overstory stem map data and seedling data to estimate recruitment into the mid-story and found that estimates of natural mid-story recruitment were much higher among white fir and incense-cedar than pines, even following treatments. </p>
Health records from hospitalized adults with malaria during 2019 at Bo Government Hospital, Sierra Leone
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>We performed a chart review of adults admitted to Bo Government Hospital during 2019. Of 893 admissions,149 (59% female, mean age 58.5 years) had a laboratory diagnosis of malaria and 22 (14.8%) died. Mortality was significantly higher among patients with severe malaria compared with those who had non-severe malaria (6/20 [30%] versus 16/129 [12.4%], <em>p</em>=0.031). Our data suggest that malaria is a common cause of death in hospitalized Sierra Leonean adults. </span></p>
Data for: Avian use of avocado farms and intact forest in the northern Sierra de Bahoruco, Dominican Repebulic
<p>The Dominican Republic is experiencing increased forest loss due to the expansion of avocado farming. While agricultural lands can provide viable habitat for birds, knowledge of avian use of avocado farms relative to native forest is limited. We conducted surveys in fall 2021 to compare the bird communities and vegetation complexity of two avocado farm sites and two native dry forest sites in the northern Sierra de Bahoruco region of the Dominican Republic to assess avian habitat use. Overall, we found that habitat associations differed for bird species distinguished by contrasting geographic ranges. In particular, the abundance, richness, and diversity of bird species endemic to Hispaniola were significantly greater in forests than in farms, while non-endemic resident bird species had the opposite habitat associations. The abundance, richness, and diversity of Neotropical migrants exhibited fewer distinct differences between farm and forest sites. Vegetation structural complexity was reduced in avocado farms relative to forests and was positively associated with the abundance, richness, and diversity of endemic bird species but negatively associated with these community measures of non-endemic resident species. Collectively, our findings suggest that avocado farms could provide viable habitat for non-endemic resident and migrant bird species, but that endemic species could be negatively impacted by an increase in avocado farming in the region. We offer recommendations for forest preservation, farming practices, and future research that could help to inform the conservation of endemic species in the region.</p>

<p>This dataset includes both raw and processed data associated with the publication entitled "Assessment of the effects of the 2021 Caldor megafire on soil physical properties, eastern Sierra Nevadas, USA", published in MDPI Fire (doi: <a href="https://doi.org/10.3390/fire6020066">10.3390/fire6020066</a>). Raw files include exported .xlsx files from Meter Group HYPROP analyses, .csv files from 10 replicate measurements of saturated hydraulic conductivity for each analyzed sample using the Meter Group KSAT device, and raw .dat files from measurement of bulk thermal properties. A single additional file also documents the laboratory results from particle size and loss on ignition analyses. Processed data includes curve fitting parameters associated with fitting the soil water retention curves (SWRC) and thermal conductivity functions (TCFs) for each sample, as described in Sion et al. (2023). Additional requests associated with data from Sion et al. (2023) should be directed to the lead author.</p>

Burden of cardiometabolic risk factors and preclinical target organ damage among adults in Freetown, Sierra Leone: a community-based health-screening survey
<p>The study aimed to investigate the prevalence of cardiometabolic risk factors (CMRFs), target organ damage and its associated factors among adults in Freetown, Sierra Leone.</p> <p><strong>Design</strong></p> <p>This community-based cross-sectional study used a stratified multistage random sampling method to recruit adult participants. </p> <p><strong>Setting </strong></p> <p>The health screening study was conducted between October 2019 and October 2021 in Western Area Urban, Freetown, Sierra Leone. </p> <p><strong>Participants</strong></p> <p>A total of 2394 adults Sierra Leoneans aged 20 years, or more were enrolled.</p> <p><strong>Outcome measure </strong></p> <p>Anthropometric data, fasting lipid profiles, fasting plasma glucose, target organ damage, clinical profiles and demographic characteristic of participants were described. The cardiometabolic risks were further related to target organ damage.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong></p> <p>The prevalence of known CMRFs was 35.3% for hypertension, 8.3% for diabetes mellitus, 21.1% for dyslipidemia, 10.0% for obesity, 13.4% for smoking and 37.9% for alcohol. Additionally, 16.1% had left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) by ECG, 14.2% had LVH by 2D-Echo while 11.4% had chronic kidney disease. Diabetes [OR = 1.176, 95% C.I. (0.759 - 1.823)] and dyslipidaemia [OR = 1.844, 95% C.I. (1.006 -3.380)] were independently associated with LVH. LVH by Echo shows an independent association with diabetes mellitus [OR =1.176, 95% C.I (0.759-1.823)] and dyslipidemia [OR = 1.844, 95% C.I (1.006-3.380)]. The odds of having CKD were associated with diabetes mellitus [OR =1.212, 95% CI (0.741-1.983)] and hypertension [OR =1.163, 95% CI (0.887-1.525)]. A low optimal cut-off points for ECG-LVH (male 24.5 vs female 27.5mm) was required to maximize sensitivity and specificity. </p> <p><strong>Conclusions</strong></p> <p>This study provides novel data-driven information on the burden of cardiometabolic risks and its association with preclinical target organ damage in a resource limited setting. It illustrates the need for interventions in improve cardiometabolic health screening and management among adults in Sierra Leoneans. </p>

An Assessment of Medication Errors among Pediatric Patients in Three Hospitals in Freetown Sierra Leone: Findings and Implications for a Low-Income Country
<p> </p><p><strong>Background</strong></p><p>Pediatric patients are prone to medicine-related problems like medication errors (MEs), which can potentially cause harm. Yet, this has not been studied in this population in Sierra Leone. Therefore, this study investigated the prevalence and nature of MEs, including potential drug-drug interactions (pDDIs) in pediatric patients in three hospitals in Freetown, Sierra Leone.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>The study was conducted in three Hospitals among pediatric patients in Freetown and consisted of two phases. Phase one was a cross-sectional retrospective review of prescriptions for completeness and accuracy against standard prescription writing guidelines. Phase two was a point prevalence inpatient chart review of MEs that were categorized into prescription, administration, and dispensing errors and pDDIs. Data was analyzed using frequency, percentages, median, and interquartile range. Kruskal-Wallis H and Mann-Whitney U tests were used to compare the prescription accuracy between the hospitals, with p<0.05 considered statistically significant.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>In phase one<strong>, </strong>while no prescription attained the global accuracy score (GAS) gold standard of 100%, 106 (29.0%) achieved the 80-100% mark. The patient 63 (17.2%), treatment 228 (62.3%), and prescriber 33 (9.0%) identifiers achieved an overall GAS range of 80-100%. Although the total GAS was not statistically significant (p=0.065), the date (p=0.041), patient (p=<0.001), treatment (p=0.022), and prescriber (p=<0.001) identifiers were statistically significant across the different hospitals. For phase two, the prevalence of MEs was 74 (56.1%), while that for pDDIs was 54 (40.9%). There was a statistically positive correlation between the occurrence of pDDI and the number of medicines prescribed (r=0.211, P=0.015).</p><p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>Low GAS depicts poor compliance with prescription writing guidelines and high prescribing errors. Medication errors were observed at each phase of the medication use cycle, while clinically significant pDDIs were also reported.
