Assessing the long-term Stability of the Spielberger State-Trait Inventory trait scale over 3.5 Years

<p>The Spielberger State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) is the most cited measure of state and trait anxiety, and is routinely employed in a variety of research and clinical contexts. Here, we investigate the temporal stability as well as the convergent and discriminant validity of the German version of the STAI-T scale across multiple time points in two independent samples (105 and 120 Caucasians). We observed temporal stabilities of .42 - .67 for intervals between 20 and 41 months and from .81 - .87 for intervals of five to 12 months, with decreasing stability as the time interval increased. Temporal stability estimates of the STAI-T were similar to those of related constructs. Additionally, examining the relationships within a nomological network support the recent conclusion that the STAI-T also shares substantial variance with questionnaires measuring negative emotionality such as depression, and hence does not measure anxiety specifically &ndash; despite its name. These results provide further psychometric information on what the STAI-T actually measures and to what extent STAI-T scores are expected to be stable across longer time intervals. This is of relevance for researchers aiming, for example, to use the STAI-T scale for predicting symptom trajectories and evaluating the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions.</p>

Longitudinal stability of brain and spinal cord quantitative MRI measures

Data from: Climatic effects on the synchrony and stability of temperate headwater invertebrates over four decades

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Important clues about the ecological effects of climate change can arise from understanding the influence of other Earth-system processes on ecosystem dynamics but few studies span the inter-decadal timescales required. We, therefore, examined how variation in annual weather patterns associated with the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) over four decades was linked to synchrony and stability in a metacommunity of stream invertebrates across multiple, contrasting headwaters in central Wales (UK).</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>Prolonged warmer and wetter conditions during positive NAO winters appeared to synchronise variations in population and community composition among and within streams thereby reducing stability across levels of ecological organisation. This climatically-mediated synchronisation occurred in all streams irrespective of acid-base status and land use, but was weaker where invertebrate communities were more functionally diverse. Wavelet linear models indicated that variation in the NAO explained up to 50% of overall synchrony in species abundances at a timescale of<span> 4-6 years. The NAO </span>appeared to affect ecological dynamics through local variations in temperature, precipitation and discharge, but increasing hydrochemical variability across sites during wetter winters might have contributed. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>Our findings illustrate how large-scale climatic fluctuations generated over the North Atlantic can affect population persistence and dynamics in inland freshwater ecosystems in ways that transcend local catchment character. Protecting and restoring functional diversity in stream communities might increase their stability against warmer, wetter conditions that are analogues of ongoing climate change. Catchment management could also dampen impacts and provide options for climate change adaptation.</span></p>

Stabilizing selection on a plumage-based foraging adaptation: hooded warblers with average-sized white tail spots live longer

<p><span>Avian flush-pursuit insectivores typically use contrasting white plumage patches in their tails or wings to startle potential prey. Although experimental evidence indicates that the extent of white has been fine-tuned by natural selection to optimize foraging performance, the hypothesis that within-population plumage variation directly influences survival or lifetime reproduction and is subject to stabilizing selection has not been tested. Here I provide such a test using data collected as part of a 14-year study of a colour-ringed breeding population of the hooded warbler (<em>Setophaga</em> <em>citrina</em>), a migratory flush-pursuit insectivore that shows inter-individual variation in the extent of white in the tail that is highly repeatable across molts and likely heritable. As expected under stabilizing selection, warblers with average-sized white tail patches achieved significantly higher long-term apparent survival than individuals with either a lesser or greater extent of white in the tail. Evidence of stabilizing selection was especially strong in males, an observation that is likely related to pronounced sexual habitat segregation on the wintering range. My results provide infrequently observed evidence of stabilizing selection operating in a natural population and also illustrate how stabilizing selection can act on avian plumage traits outside the context of sexual and social signaling.</span></p>

More is not always better: Peat moss mixtures slightly enhance peatland stability

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Species-poor peatlands challenge biodiversity–ecosystem function theory, which generally links high species diversity to stable ecosystem functions. An open question in ecosystem ecology is whether assemblages of naturally co-occurring peat mosses contribute to the stability of peatland ecosystem processes. We used a replacement series mesocosm experiment with mixtures of <em>Sphagnum cuspidatum</em> and <em>S. medium</em> to assess resistance, resilience, and recovery rates of net ecosystem CO<sub>2</sub> exchange (NEE) under a mild and a deep water table drawdown event. Our results show a positive effect of mild water table drawdown on NEE with no apparent role for the composition of the peat moss assemblage. Our study indicates that the carbon uptake capacity by peat moss assemblages is rather resilient to mild water table drawdown, but seriously affected by deeper drought conditions. Co-occurring peat moss species seem to enhance the resilience of the carbon uptake function – i.e. </span><span>ability of NEE to return to pre-perturbation levels – of peat moss mixtures only slightly. These findings suggest that assemblages of co-occurring <em>Sphagnum</em> moss species do only marginally contribute to the stability of ecosystem functions in peatlands under drought conditions. We did find increased recovery with a larger share of <em>S. cuspidatum</em> in the mixtures, aiding in the ecosystem's role as carbon sink. Above all, our results highlight that predicted severe droughts can gravely affect the sink capacity of peatlands, with only a small extenuating role for peat moss mixtures.</span></p>

RAD54L2 counters TOP2-DNA adducts to promote genome stability (Etoposide treated RPE1 CRISPR screens in TP53 and RAD53L2 knock outs)

<p>The catalytic cycle of topoisomerase 2 (TOP2) enzymes proceeds via a transient DNA double-strand break (DSB) intermediate termed the TOP2 cleavage complex (TOP2cc), in which the TOP2 protein is covalently bound to DNA. Anti-cancer agents such as etoposide operate by stabilising TOP2ccs, ultimately generating genotoxic TOP2-DNA protein crosslinks that require processing and repair. Here, we identify RAD54-like 2 (RAD54L2) as a factor promoting TOP2cc resolution. We demonstrate that RAD54L2 acts through a novel mechanism together with zinc finger protein associated with TDP2 and TOP2 (ZATT/ZNF451) and independent of tyrosyl-DNA phosphodiesterase 2 (TDP2). Our work suggests a model wherein RAD54L2 recognises sumoylated-TOP2 and, using its ATPase activity, promotes TOP2cc resolution and prevents DSB exposure. These findings suggest RAD54L2-mediated TOP2cc resolution as a potential mechanism for cancer-therapy resistance and highlight RAD54L2 as an attractive candidate for drug discovery.</p>

Flow in fetoplacental-like microvessels in vitro enhances perfusion, barrier function, and matrix stability

<p>Proper placental vascularization is vital for pregnancy outcomes, but assessing it with animal models and human explants has limitations. Here, we present a 3D in vitro model of human placenta terminal villi that includes fetal mesenchyme and vascular endothelium. By co-culturing HUVEC, placental fibroblasts, and pericytes in a macro-fluidic chip with a flow reservoir, we generate fully perfusable fetal microvessels. Pressure-driven flow is crucial for the growth and remodeling of these microvessels, resulting in early formation of interconnected placental-like vascular networks and maintained longevity. Computational fluid dynamics simulations predict shear forces, which increase microtissue stiffness, decrease diffusivity and enhance barrier function as shear stress rises. Mass-spec analysis reveals the deposition of numerous extracellular proteins, with flow notably enhancing the expression of matrix stability regulators, proteins associated with actin dynamics, and cytoskeleton organization. Our model provides a powerful tool for deducing complex in vivo parameters, such as shear stress on developing vascularized placental tissue, and holds promise for unraveling gestational disorders related to the vasculature.</p>

Data from: Social stability via management of natal males in captive rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta)

<p>Keystone individuals are expected to disproportionately contribute to group stability. For instance, rhesus macaques (<em>Macaca mulatta</em>) who police conflict contribute towards stability. Not all individuals' motivations align with mechanisms of group stability. In wild systems, males typically disperse at maturity and attempt to ascend via contest competition. In a captive system, dispersal is not naturally enabled – individuals attempt to ascend in their natal groups, which can be enabled by matrilineal kin potentially destabilizing group dynamics. We relocated select high-ranking natal males from five groups and assessed group stability before and after. We quantified hierarchical metrics at the individual and group level. After removal, we found significantly higher aggression against the established hierarchy (reversals), indicative of opportunistic attempts to change the hierarchy. Mixed-sex social signaling became more hierarchical, but the strength of this effect varied. Stable structure was not uniformly reached across the groups and alpha males did not all benefit. Indiscriminate natal male removal is an unreliable solution to group instability. Careful assessment of how natal males are embedded within their group is necessary to balance individual and group welfare.</p>

Context-dependent impact of changes in precipitation on the stability of grassland biomass

<p>Community stability plays a crucial role in ensuring the consistent provision of ecosystem services despite environmental changes, including alterations in precipitation patterns. Over the past decades, significant progress has been made in understanding the responses of the stability of grassland plant communities and underlying mechanisms, defined as the ratio of the temporal mean biomass to the standard deviation. However, a crucial knowledge gap remains regarding whether the impacts of precipitation on the stability of grassland biomass are contingent upon specific contextual factors.</p> <p>Here, we examined the stability of above- and below-ground biomass in adjacent grass- and shrub-dominated communities through a 7-year manipulation experiment involving seven precipitation levels: 20%, 40%, and 60% decreases, as well as 20%, 40%, and 60% increases in natural rainfall, in addition to ambient precipitation.</p> <p>We found that the stability of community biomass was influenced by three contextual factors including the magnitude and directionality of precipitation, above- and below-ground biomass, and the type of vegetation. In particular, higher and more intense precipitation resulted in higher stability of above-ground biomass in both grass- and shrub-dominated communities. Conversely, higher precipitation intensity led to decreased below-ground biomass stability in grass-dominated communities but increased below-ground biomass stability in shrub-dominated communities. Species stability and species asynchrony consistently played a positive role in explaining the stability of above-ground biomass in both grass- and shrub-dominated communities. However, species asynchrony negatively influenced below-ground biomass stability in grass-dominated communities without a comparable effect in shrub-dominated communities. The preeminent contribution to the total community biomass was identified in the stability of below-ground biomass, evident in both grass-dominated and shrub-dominated communities.</p> <p><em>Synthesis.</em> This study highlights that while the specific effects of changes in precipitation may vary depending on the context, the fundamental processes governing biomass stability are consistent. These findings elucidate the desert steppe ecosystems' adaptive response to precipitation variations and emphasize their pivotal role in maintaining ecosystem functions under climatic perturbations.</p>

Data from: Stable isotope evidence for long-term stability of large-scale hydroclimate in the Neogene North American Great Plains

<p>The Great Plains of North America host a stark climatic gradient, separating the humid and well-watered eastern US from the semi-arid and arid western US, and this gradient shapes the region's water availability, its ecosystems, and its economies. This climatic boundary is largely set by the influence of two competing atmospheric circulation systems that meet over the Great Plains—the wintertime westerlies bring dominantly dry air that gives way to moist, southerly air transported by the Great Plains Low-Level Jet in the warmer months. Climate model simulations suggest that, as CO<sub>2</sub> rises, this low- level jet will strengthen, leading to greater precipitation in the spring, but less in the summer and, thus, no change in mean annual precipitation. Combined with rising temperatures that will increase potential evapotranspiration, semi-arid conditions will shift eastward, with potentially large consequences for the ecosystems and inhabitants of the Great Plains. We examine how hydroclimate in the Great Plains varied in the past in response to warmer global climate by studying the paleoclimate record within the Ogallala Formation, which underlies nearly the entire Great Plains and provides a spatially resolved record of hydroclimate during the globally warmer late Miocene. We use the stable isotopes of oxygen (δ<sup>18</sup>O) as preserved in authigenic carbonates hosted within the abundant paleosol and fluvial successions that comprise the Ogallala Formation as a record of past hydroclimate. Today, and coincident with the modern aridity gradient, there is a sharp meteoric water δ<sup>18</sup>O gradient with high (−6 to 0‰) δ<sup>18</sup>O in the southern Great Plains and low (−12 to −18‰) δ<sup>18</sup>O in the northern Plains. We find that the spatial pattern of reconstructed late Miocene precipitation δ<sup>18</sup>O is indistinguishable from the spatial pattern of modern meteoric water δ<sup>18</sup>O. We use a recently developed vapor transport model to demonstrate that this δ<sup>18</sup>O spatial pattern requires air mass mixing over the Great Plains between dry westerly and moist southerly air masses in the late Miocene—consistent with today. Our results suggest that the spatial extent of these two atmospheric circulation systems have been largely unchanged since the late Miocene and any strengthening of the Great Plains Low-Level Jet in response to warming has been isotopically masked by proportional increases in westerly moisture delivery. Our results hold implications for the sensitivity of Great Plains climate to changes in global temperature and CO<sub>2</sub> and also for our understanding of the processes that drove Ogallala Formation deposition in the late Miocene.</p>

The magnetic recording stability of vortex state irregularly shaped natural iron oxides: raw data, processing and micromagnetic modelling results

<p>Magnetic minerals, especially those existing within the vortex domain state, serve as the primary natural archives of ancient magnetic fields. In this investigation, we introduce an innovative method to examine the magnetic stability of remanence-bearing minerals. This method involves integrating <strong>Synchrotron-based Ptychographic X-ray Computed Nano-tomography (PXCT)</strong> <strong>with micromagnetic modelling</strong>. PXCT, a tomographic technique, is a non-destructive resource, which enables its application to valuable (unique) samples. When applied to a microscopic sample of weakly magnetic carbonate rock, PXCT revealed numerous nanoscopic grains of magnetite/maghemite, each exhibiting diverse morphologies, alongside various non-magnetic minerals present in the rock matrix. Subsequently, micromagnetic models were employed to predict the properties of these grains and investigate the potential impacts of irregular morphologies.</p>

Data from: Species contributions to ecosystem stability change with disturbance type

<p>Simultaneous exposure to multiple stressors complicates the challenge of predicting ecological responses to global environmental change. Here, we show that the contributions of individual species and functional groups to the overall stability of ecosystems can be modified by the presence of different stressors, both individually and in combination. By disturbing natural rocky shore communities with nutrients and sediments and simulating extinction of predatory whelks and grazers, we also found that consumers can simultaneously stabilise and destabilise communities along different stability dimensions, irrespective of their trophic position. Our results suggest that our experimental disturbances influenced consumer contributions to stability indirectly by modifying the interactions between consumers and macroalgae in different ways. These findings merit further exploration in different systems exposed to a range of different stressors to better understand how perturbations of different kinds can modify the multifaceted contributions of species to the overall stability of ecosystems.</p>
