Hydraulic prediction of drought-induced plant dieback and top-kill depends on leaf habit and growth form
<p>Hydraulic failure caused by severe drought contributes to aboveground dieback and whole-plant death. The extent to which dieback or whole-plant death can be predicted by plant hydraulic traits has rarely been tested among species with different leaf habits and/or growth forms. We investigated 19 hydraulic traits in 40 woody species in a tropical savanna and their potential correlations with drought response during an extreme drought event during the El Niño–Southern Oscillation in 2015. Plant hydraulic trait variation was partitioned substantially by leaf habit but not growth form along a trade-off axis between traits that support drought tolerance versus avoidance. Semi-deciduous species and shrubs had the highest branch dieback and top-kill (complete aboveground death) among the leaf habits or growth forms. Dieback and top-kill were well explained by combining hydraulic traits with leaf habit and growth form, suggesting integrating life history traits with hydraulic traits will yield better predictions.</p>

Crossref Funder Registry - Mapping to top-level funding organizations
<p>The <a href="https://www.crossref.org/services/funder-registry/">Crossref Funder Registry</a> is an open registry of names and identifiers of research funding organizations. The registry has a hierarchical structure. Each organization may have relations with parent and child organizations.<br> <br> We provide a mapping of organizations in the Crossref Funder Registry to the corresponding top-level organizations. The mapping is based on version 1.34 of the Crossref Funder Registry, made available in an RDF file in the <a href="https://gitlab.com/crossref/open_funder_registry/">Crossref Funder Registry GitLab repository</a>.<br> <br> To create the mapping to top-level organizations, we first extracted the hierarchical structure of the Crossref Funder Registry based on all ‘narrower’ and ‘broader’ assignments. Using this hierarchical structure, we then identified for each of the 27,681 active organizations in the registry the corresponding top-level organizations. For most organizations, we identified a single top-level organization. However, organizations may have multiple parent organizations, and for some organizations we therefore identified multiple top-level organizations.<br> <br> Example: ‘H2020 Societal Challenges’ has ‘Horizon 2020 Framework Programme’ as its only parent organization, ‘Horizon 2020 Framework Programme’ has ‘European Commission’ as its only parent organization, and ‘European Commission’ does not have a parent organization. Helminth-associated changes in host immune phenotype connect top-down and bottom-up interactions during co-infection
<p>Within-host parasite interactions can be mediated by the host and changes in host phenotypes often serve as indicators of the presence or intensity of parasite interactions.</p> <p>Parasites like helminths induce a range of physiological, morphological, and immunological changes in hosts that can drive bottom-up (resource-mediated) or top-down (immune-mediated) interactions with co-infecting parasites. Although top-down and bottom-up interactions are typically studied in isolation, the diverse phenotypic changes induced by parasite infection may serve as a useful tool for understanding if, and when, these processes act in concert.</p> <p>Using an anthelmintic treatment study of African buffalo (Syncerus caffer), we tracked changes in host immunological and morphological phenotypes during helminth-coccidia co-infection to investigate their role in driving independent and combinatorial bottom-up and top-down parasite interactions. We also examined repercussions for host fitness.</p> <p>Clearance of a blood-sucking helminth, Haemonchus, from the host gastrointestinal tract induced a systemic Th2 immune phenotype, while clearance of a tissue-feeding helminth, Cooperia, induced a systemic Th1 phenotype. Furthermore, the Haemonchus-associated systemic Th2 immune phenotype drove simultaneous top-down and bottom-up effects that increased coccidia shedding by changing the immunological and morphological landscapes of the intestine.</p> <p>Higher coccidia shedding was associated with lower host body condition, a lower chance of pregnancy, and older age at first pregnancy, suggesting that coccidia infection imposed significant condition and reproductive costs on the host.</p> <p>Our findings suggest that top-down and bottom-up interactions may commonly co-occur and that tracking key host phenotypes that change in response to infection can help uncover complex pathways by which parasites interact.</p>
Data from: Top-down control of a marine mesopredator: Increase in native white-tailed eagles accelerates the extinction of an endangered seabird population
<p><span>1. </span><span>Bottom-up control is an important regulator of marine mesopredators such as seabirds. The prevalence of top-down control on these species is however less well understood. In particular, how native predators affect seabird populations has rarely been quantified. </span></p> <p><span>2. </span><span>Here, we investigate how an increase in white-tailed eagles in northern Norway, a stronghold for the species, affected a local population of 25,000 pairs of black-legged kittiwakes, a red-listed seabird, during a 42-year period ending with colony extinction. We use a natural experiment of two neighbouring colonies with/without eagle predation to disentangle the effects of eagles from local kittiwake foraging conditions (using size of young herring as a proxy). </span></p> <p><span>3. </span><span>At the colony where eagle predation occurred, and in contrast to the eagle-free colony, kittiwake breeding success and population size declined with increased eagle abundance, the latter more strongly under poor foraging conditions. Breeding success increased with foraging conditions at both colonies. </span></p> <p><span>4. </span><span>Simple population modelling shows that although conditions were insufficient to sustain the eagle-exposed colony, the increased abundance of eagles sped up its extirpation by many years.</span></p> <p><span>5. </span><span>Policy implications</span><span>. Our study shows that top-down effects from avian predators can be significant regulators of seabird populations, challenging their conservation where native, often protected, predators are rising. Such effects, and their possible interaction with other factors, must also be accounted for when using seabird demographic traits as environmental indicators and when developing more flexible and effective management and action plans. </span></p>
Integrating top-down and bottom-up approaches to understand the genetic architecture of speciation across a monkeyflower hybrid zone
<p><span>Understanding the phenotypic and genetic architecture of reproductive isolation is a longstanding goal of speciation research. In several systems, large-effect loci contributing to barrier phenotypes have been characterized, but such causal connections are rarely known for more complex genetic architectures. In this study, we combine 'top-down' and 'bottom-up' approaches with demographic modeling toward an integrated understanding of speciation across a monkeyflower hybrid zone. Previous work suggests that pollinator visitation acts as a primary barrier to gene flow between two divergent red- and yellow-flowered ecotypes of <em>Mimulus</em> <em>aurantiacus</em>. Several candidate isolating traits and anonymous SNP loci under divergent selection have been identified, but their genomic positions remain unknown. Here, we report findings from demographic analyses that indicate this hybrid zone formed by secondary contact, but that subsequent gene flow was restricted by widespread barrier loci across the genome. Using a novel, geographic cline-based genome scan, we demonstrate that candidate barrier loci are broadly distributed across the genome, rather than mapping to one or a few 'islands of speciation.' Quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping reveals that most floral traits are polygenic, with little evidence that QTL co-localize, indicating that most traits are genetically independent. Finally, we find little evidence that QTL and candidate barrier loci overlap, suggesting that some loci contribute to other forms of reproductive isolation. Our findings highlight the challenges of understanding the genetic architecture of reproductive isolation and reveal that barriers to gene flow aside from pollinator isolation may play an important role in this system.</span></p>
Datasets for: Colony-nesting gulls restrict activity levels of native top carnivore during the breeding season
<p>Although nesting in colonies can offer substantial reproductive benefits for many seabird species, increased visibility to predators remains a significant disadvantage for most colony-breeders. To counteract this, some seabird species have evolved aggressive nest defense strategies to protect vulnerable eggs and chicks. Here we used an experimental approach to test whether colony inhabitance by breeding gulls (<em>Larus</em> spp.) in western Norway impacts visitation rates of a native, mammalian predator, the Eurasian otter (<em>Lutra</em> <em>lutra</em>) during the breeding season. Camera traps were placed inside of and on the periphery of seabird colonies prior to the breeding season and left to run for one continuous year. Sighting frequency of otters on these cameras was compared to a control region free of gull nesting. We found that otter activity was significantly reduced on the colonies when gulls were incubating and rearing chicks, compared to time periods when gulls were building nests and absent from the colonies. Rhythmic activity patterns did not seem to be significantly impacted by the presence of gulls. This study provides clear evidence that certain colony-nesting species can have a direct, negative impact on visitation rates of a native carnivore. Seasonal carnivore activity patterns are likely to be highly dependent on differing nesting strategies and level of nest defense by seabirds.</p>

Parasites as ecosystem modulators: Foliar pathogens suppress top-down effects of large herbivores
<p><span>Parasites can catalyze or inhibit interactions between their hosts and other species, but the ecosystem-level effects of such interaction modifications are poorly understood. We conducted a large-scale field experiment in temperate grasslands of northeastern China to understand how foliar fungal pathogens (e.g., rusts and leaf</span><span> spot</span><span>s</span><span>) influenced top-down effects of large herbivores (cattle; <em>Bos</em> <em>taurus</em>) on plant diversity and productivity. In the absence of foliar pathogens, cattle grazing strongly suppressed biomass of the dominant grass, <em>Leymus</em> <em>chinensis</em>, (↓56%), generating competitive release that significantly increased plant species richness (↑75%) and evenness (↑15%). In the absence of grazing, pathogen attack on <em>L. chinensis</em> had no measurable effect on host biomass. However, pathogen infection greatly weakened top-down effects of herbivory by inhibiting cattle grazing on <em>L. chinensis</em> and negating grazing effects on plant biomass and species richness. Mechanistically, foliar pathogens were linked to increased alkaloid (↑45%) and reduced nitrogen levels (↓19%) in leaf tissue that appeared to deter cattle grazing on<em> L. chinensis</em>. Our results demonstrate that foliar pathogens can suppress top-down effects of large herbivores on grassland community structure and function by modifying the strength of its host's interactions with the dominant consumer. We propose that parasites may function primarily as modulators of ecosystem function when their direct effects on host density (often dampened by evolution) are overshadowed by influences on host traits that modify host interactions with strong competitors, herbivores, or predators.</span></p>

Habitat isolation interacts with top-down and bottom-up processes in a seagrass ecosystem
<p>Habitat loss is accelerating at unprecedented rates, leading to the emergence of smaller, more isolated habitat remnants. Habitat isolation adversely affects many ecological processes independently, but little is known about how habitat isolation may interact with ecosystem processes such as top-down (consumer-driven) and bottom-up (resource-driven) effects. To investigate the interactive influence of habitat isolation, resource availability and consumer distribution and impact on community structure, we tested two hypotheses using invertebrate and algal epibionts on temperate seagrasses, an ecosystem of ecological and conservation importance. First, we hypothesized that habitat isolation will change the structure of the seagrass epibiont community, and isolated patches of seagrass will have lower epibiont biomass and different epibiont community composition. Second, we hypothesized that habitat isolation would mediate top-down (i.e., herbivory) and bottom-up (i.e., nutrient enrichment) control for algal epibionts. We used observational studies in natural seagrass patches, and experimental artificial seagrass to examine three levels of habitat isolation. We further manipulated top-down and bottom-up processes in artificial seagrass through consumer reductions and nutrient additions, respectively. We indeed found that habitat isolation of seagrass patches decreased epibiont biomass and modified epibiont community composition. This pattern was largely due to dispersal limitation of invertebrate epibionts that resulted in a decline in their abundance and richness in isolated patches. Further, habitat isolation reduced consumer abundances, weakening top-down control of algal epibionts in isolated seagrass patches. Nutrient additions, however, reversed this pattern, and allowed a top-down effect on algal richness to emerge in isolated habitats, demonstrating a complex interaction between patch isolation and top-down and bottom-up processes. Habitat isolation may therefore shape the relative importance of central processes in ecosystems, leading to changes in community composition and food web structure in marine habitats.</p>
