Health anxiety and death anxiety. The role of cyberchondria and social aspirations

The relation between deviation from the balanced time perspective and quality of life among older people. The mediating role of death anxiety and the moderating role of awareness of aging

Objectives. In the current study, one of the objectives was to check if the deviation from a balanced time perspective (DBTP) is a predictor of the quality of life of the elderly. Another objective investigated whether awareness of aging is a moderator and death anxiety a mediator of the relationship between PTSD and quality of life. Method. 436 elderly people participated in this research (M = 68.27; SD= 6.56; 66.7% female, 33.3% male). They completed 4 instruments to evaluate the variables included in the study: World Health Organization Quality of Life, Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory - Short version, Death Anxiety Scale and Awareness of Age-Related Change 10-Item Short Form (awareness of aging). Results. Statistical analyzes highlighted the fact that DBTP is not a predictor of quality of life, but it can positively predict death anxiety. Also, awareness of aging does not moderate the relationship between DBTP and quality of life. Finally, death anxiety negatively predicts quality of life, but also mediates the relationship between DBTP and quality of life. Discussion. This study brought to the fore some concepts less addressed in the case of the elderly population in Romania, which could lead to the identification of some benefits for improving the quality of life of the elderly. Starting from the conclusions obtained, promotion and intervention plans can be developed to improve mental and physical health services. The inclusion process of the elderly in as many social activities as possible can also be considered.

Data from: Paternal care in a fish: epigenetics and fitness enhancing effects on offspring anxiety
In many animals, including humans, interactions with caring parents can have long-lasting effects on offspring sensitivity to stressors. However, whether these parental effects impact offspring fitness in nature is often unclear. In addition, despite evidence that maternal care can influence offspring behaviour via epigenetic alterations to the genome, it remains unclear whether paternal care has similar effects. Here, we show in three-spined sticklebacks, a fish in which fathers are the sole provider of offspring care, that the direct care provided by fathers affects offspring anxiety and the potential for epigenetic alterations to the offspring genome. We find that families are differentially vulnerable to early stress and fathers can compensate for this differential sensitivity with the quality of their care. This variation in paternal care is also linked to the expression in offspring brains of a DNA methyltransferase (Dnmt3a) responsible for de novo methylation. We show that these paternal effects are potentially adaptive and anxious offspring are unlikely to survive an encounter with a predator. By supplying offspring care, fathers reduce offspring anxiety thereby increasing the survival of their offspring—not in the traditional sense through resource provisioning but through an epigenetic effect on offspring behavioural development.
COVID-19 anxiety versus well-being - students' sense of support and self-esteem

This study is aimed to evaluate the impact of fear of the COVID-19 pandemic on the quality of life of university students in Poland. An analysis is made of the correlation of various features of the student cohorts with social support and their self-evaluation, in the context of sensing the chances for success in life and satisfaction from studying online.

Fighting the pandemic through socioeconomic closure and remote education is imposing a new routine on university students that restricts the activities important in their development and well-being. The research assumption was made that anxiety (N=973) caused by COVID-19 is a personal experience which is socially and culturally regulated. Culturally, the Polish society shows a very high level of distrust towards institutions and people outside private networks (the "social vacuum" syndrome).

It's All Just A Lie. I Know It! COVID-19 Conspiracy Beliefs and COVID-19 Anxiety Versus the War in Ukraine: The Role of Dogmatism

In the present study, we investigated the relationship between online vigilance and phubbing, a specific form of technoference that implies ignoring someone while favoring technological, Internet-based devices, such as smartphones. We also explored the mediating role of loneliness and the moderating role of moral disengagement in the relationship between online vigilance and phubbing.

Maternal anxiety and prenatal support predict pregnancy length and infant characteristics at birth during the pandemic

ABSTRACT

According to the theoretical prediction of the smoke detector principle, heightened anxiety as a personality trait could lead to better survival and reproductive success in unpredictable environments. Yet published studies suggest that maternal anxiety negatively affects gestation and birth outcomes, which may lead to decreased reproductive success. To resolve this conundrum, we studied the association between maternal anxiety and birth outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data collected from 1080 expectant mothers from the Corona Mums Project included maternal trait anxiety (STAI X2), perceived emotional support (PES), duration of gestation, and infant parameters at birth taken from hospital health records. After adjusting for covariates, multiple regression models showed that STAI X2 positively predicted infant birth weight (β=0.07, p=0.023) and length (β=0.08, p=0.010). PES positively predicted only birth weight (β=0.06, p=0.048). Neither of these factors was significantly related to duration of gestation, although the association with PES was of borderline significance (β=0.06, p=0.053). The results suggest that maternal increased ability to detect threats, indicated by her trait anxiety during the unpredictable conditions of COVID-19, was associated with better infant characteristics at birth. This may improve infant survival and maternal reproductive success, implying that increased trait anxiety could be adaptive during environmental threats.
