Modeling Viability of Avian Populations in the Southern Appalachians: Potential impacts of Climate Change from 2002 to 2004

There is a general consensus that the global climate has slowly warmed (0.6 degrees C) over the past 100 years and that this trend will continue at an accelerated rate over the next 100 years (1 degree to 6 degrees C) (Kattenburg et al. 1996). Aside from the mean annual increase in temperature, the frequency of weather extremes, such as heat waves, drought, and tropical storms are projected to increase across North America over the next century (Easterling et al. 2000). Past changes in temperature and precipitation have been accompanied by changes in insect and vertebrate distributions from both tropical and temperate environments (Parmesan 1996, Pounds et. Al 1999). We have developed bird-habitat models that allow us to predict the occurrences of species in specific forest types within and across national forests within the Blue Ridge physiographic province with a high degree of accuracy (Linder et al. submitted). These models categorize habitat as unsuitable, marginal or high quality as determined by the rate of occupancy over five years of point count data. We will validate our occurrence models with reproductive data. We hypothesize that reproductive success will correspond to predicted habitat quality. While stochastic events may obscure patterns in the short-term, long-term reproductive trends should reflect site quality.

Avian point count data from the Ice Storm Experiment (ISE) plots

Large-scale disturbances such as ice storms may increase in frequency and intensity as climate changes. While disturbances are a natural component of forest ecosystems, climatically driven alteration to historical patterns may impart fundamental change to ecosystem function. At Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, NH, experimental ice storms of varying severity were applied to replicate plots of mature northern hardwoods to quantify their effects on forested ecosystems. We assessed ice storm treatment effects on insectivorous foliage-gleaning birds and their interactions with larval Lepidoptera. These birds are charismatic, of conservation concern, and are a major predator of caterpillars. In turn, lepidopterans are the dominant herbivores in temperate forests and are integral to ecosystem function. We predicted that avian abundance would increase due to additional structural heterogeneity caused by ice treatments, with a concomitant increase in caterpillar predation. Point counts were used to measure insectivorous bird activity in the ice storm experiment plots and additional control plots before and after treatments. Point counts were conducted in June 2015 and June 2016. Icing occurred in January-February 2016. We deployed and retrieved plasticine model caterpillars and estimated predation from characteristic marks to these surrogates. Abundance of foliage-gleaning birds was higher in the ice storm plots and birds responded to treatments as a single diffuse disturbance rather than on an individual plot level. All species except one were observed both before and after the ice treatments. Surprisingly, predation on caterpillar models was unaffected by ice storm treatments but rather was a function of caterpillar density. The increase in avian abundance in the ice storm treatment plots corroborates other studies of bird responses to relatively small-scale disturbances in forests and the limited change in species composition was expected given the plot size. SGS-LTER Avian Road Counts (Breeding Bird Survey) in eastern Colorado, USA 1994-2002

This data package was produced by researchers working on the Shortgrass Steppe Long Term Ecological Research (SGS-LTER) Project, administered at Colorado State University. Long-term datasets and background information (proposals, reports, photographs, etc.) on the SGS-LTER project are contained in a comprehensive project collection within the Digital Collections of Colorado. The data table and associated metadata document, which is in Ecological Metadata Language, may be available through other repositories serving the ecological research community and represent components of the larger SGS-LTER project collection. The Breeding Bird Survey is a large-scale survey of North American birds. It is a roadside survey, primarily covering the continental United States and southern Canada, although survey routes have recently been initiated in Alaska and northern Mexico. The BBS was started in 1966, and the over 3,500 routes are surveyed in June by experienced birders. Routes 305, Nunn and 901, Rockport are located in the area of the SGS research site. The primary objective of the BBS has been the estimation of population change for songbirds. However, the data have many potential uses, and investigators have used the data to address a variety of research and management objectives. In the USGS-BBS Home Page, reults from the BBS are summarized, and pictures of birds and other species information. Data from 1966 - 2002 were managed by the SGS-LTER project. Endocrine regulation of egg rejection in an avian brood parasite host

<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Parasite-host coevolution can lead to novel behavioural adaptations in hosts to resist parasitism. In avian obligate ­­­brood parasite and host systems, many hosts species have evolved diverse cognitive and behavioural traits to recognize and reject parasitic eggs. Our understanding of the evolution and ecology of these defences hinges on our understanding of the mechanisms that regulate them. We hypothesized that corticosterone, a hormone linked to the stress-response, vigilance, and the suppression of parental behaviour, stimulates the rejection of foreign eggs by brood parasite hosts. We experimentally reduced circulating glucocorticoid levels with mitotane injections in American robins <i>Turdus migratorius</i> and found that the mitotane-treated birds rejected foreign eggs at a lower frequency compared to the sham-treated subjects. This is the first study to causally identify a potential mechanism of a widespread defence behaviour, and it is consistent with egg rejection being mediated by stress physiology.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

Data from: Assessing avian diversity and community composition along a successional gradient in traditional Lacandon Maya agroforests

Evidence regarding the ability of agroforests to conserve biological diversity has been mixed; they tend to maintain avian communities with species richness similar to that of undisturbed forest ecosystems but generally do not completely preserve community composition. Using a combination of occupancy modeling and non-metric multidimensional scaling on point-count data, we assessed changes in avian community diversity and composition along a successional gradient in traditional Lacandon Maya agroforests and compared them to protected areas in the region. Bird species richness and diversity in Lacandon agroforests peaked in early secondary forest stages. These agroforests' mean Shannon-Weiner diversity was 5% higher than that of nearby protected areas, but their species richness was similar. Community composition in Lacandon agroforests changed throughout succession, with earlier stages supporting communities distinctly characterized by generalist species, while subsequent, less-intensively managed stages tended to support more forest-dwellers. The bird community observed in even the most mature secondary forest stages in Lacandon agroforests differed from that of undisturbed rainforest ecosystems. These results demonstrate the potential of traditional Lacandon agroforestry management to conserve avian biodiversity while ensuring food sovereignty for farmers. However, because the community composition of early successional stages was different than later stages, shortening fallow cycles and reducing forest cover to increase agricultural production will limit the species this system can support. This study illustrates the value of incorporating traditional agroecosystems into conservation planning as well as maintaining protected areas, because the latter serve as refugia for species that require undisturbed forest habitat in an agroecological matrix.

Data from: Quantifying shape and ecology in avian pedal claws: the relationship between the bony core and keratinous sheath

Terrestrial tetrapods use their claws to interact with their environments in a plethora of ways. Birds in particular have developed a diversity of claw shapes since they are often not bound to terrestrial locomotion and have heterogeneous body masses ranging several orders of magnitude. Numerous previous studies have hypothesized a connection between pedal claw shape and ecological mode in birds, yet have generated conflicting results, spanning from clear ecological groupings based on claw shape to a complete overlap of ecological modes. The majority of these studies have relied on traditional morphometric arc measurements of keratinous sheaths and have variably accounted for likely confounding factors such as body mass and phylogenetic relatedness. To better address the hypothesized relationship between ecology and claw shape in birds, we collected 580 radiographs allowing visualization of the bony core and keratinous sheath shape in 21 avian orders. Geometric morphometrics was used to quantify bony core and keratinous sheath shape and was compared to results using traditional arc measurements. Neither approach significantly separates bird claws into coarse ecological categories after integrating body size and phylogenetic relatedness; however, some separation between ecological groups is evident and we find a gradual shift from the claw shape of ground-dwelling birds to those of predatory birds. Further, the bony claw core and keratinous sheath are significantly correlated, and the degree of functional integration does not differ across ecological groups. Therefore, it is likely possible to compare fossil bony cores with extant keratinous sheaths after applying corrections. Finally, traditional metrics and geometric morphometric shape are significantly, yet loosely correlated. Based on these results, future workers are encouraged to use geometric morphometric approaches to study claw geometry and account for confounding factors such as body size, phylogeny, and individual variation prior to predicting ecology in fossil taxa.

Detritus decorations as the extended phenotype deflect avian predator attack increasing fitness in an orb‐web spider

<ol> <li>A number of strategies that divert attacks of visually guided predators, such as birds, have evolved multiple times in animals. Detritus web decorations built by certain orb-web spider species are thought to deflect avian predator attacks away from spiders and towards their web decorations. Still, empirical evidence for this function and its adaptive significance is lacking. The orb-web spider, <i>Cyclosa monticola</i>,<i> </i>adorns its web using a linear detritus decoration consisting of moults, egg sacs, prey remains, and leaf litters.</li> <li>In the present study, we investigated whether detritus decorations constructed by <i>C. monticola</i> spiders<i> </i>divert attacks of avian predators away from spiders. We first employed colour modelling to compare spider bodies and detritus decoration colouration from the perspective of domestic chicks and blue tits. We then experimentally tested the deflection hypothesis in the laboratory using naïve chicks as predators. We put the chicks in a cage containing a web either with (S+) or without (S-) a spider and either with (D+) or without (D-) detritus decoration (a total of four types of webs: S+D+, S+D-, S-D+, and S-D-) under both natural habitat background and white background. </li> <li>We found that the colour of <i>C. monticola</i> spiders is indistinguishable from that of their detritus decorations for both chicks and blue tits with both backgrounds. Laboratory predation experiments showed that with both backgrounds, chicks attacked the spiders much less frequently when their decorations were present on the webs (S+D+; natural habitat: 20%, white background: 30%) than when their decorations were absent (S+D-; natural habitat: 95%, white background: 85%), resulting in greater spider survival advantage. </li> <li>We also found that the rate of attack of spiders and their decorations was not random; the decorations were more likely to be attacked than spiders, regardless of the ratio of surface area of decorations to spider bodies when both spiders and decorations were presented (S+D+). Therefore, our results support a deflection, rather than concealment hypothesis for web decorations.</li> <li>In conclusion, our study provides evidence that the extended phenotypes beyond the animal bodies, can divert avian predator attacks, therefore, may improve the fitness of animals.</li> </ol>

Growing in the city: urban evolutionary ecology of avian growth rates.

<p>Rapid environmental change driven by urbanisation offers a unique insight into the adaptive potential of wildlife as it can induce distinct selective pressures on urban dwelling organisms. Despite mounting evidence for urban-driven phenotypic differentiation across taxa, knowledge of the impact of urbanisation on vertebrate developmental rates and subsequent survival is very limited. Importantly, the role of selection on urban-driven body mass divergence in juvenile organisms remains poorly understood. We studied nestling development in a gradient of urbanisation set in Warsaw, Poland, in two nestbox breeding passerine species: great tits (<i>Parus major</i>) and blue tits (<i>Cyanistes caeruleus</i>). Each nestbox in the study system was assessed for surrounding percentage of Impervious Surface Area (ISA). Within these nestboxes, weight measurements of individual nestlings were collected during three breeding seasons and at regular intervals after hatching. Although asymptotic mass and growth rate were not directly affected by ISA in a subset of frequently measured nestlings, the age of fastest growth (inflection point) was delayed in blue tit nests surrounded by greater ISA. Across the entire dataset, nestling body mass was negatively affected by increasing ISA at days 5 and 10 after hatching for great tits, and at days 10 and 15 for blue tits, respectively. Concomitantly, offspring survival at days 5 and 10 decreased with increasing ISA for both species. An analysis of selection differentials performed for two contrasting levels of imperviousness (low and high ISA) revealed a significant positive association between mass at day 2 and survival at fledging. Importantly, the strength of selection for heavier nestlings at hatching was greater for great tits in the more transformed, high ISA environment. This study confirms the considerable impact of imperviousness -a proxy for urbanisation level- on offspring development, body mass and survival, and highlights increased selection on avian birth weight in a high ISA environment.</p>

Data from: Avian ecological succession in the Amazon: a long-term case study following experimental deforestation

<p>Approximately 20% of the Brazilian Amazon has now been deforested, and the Amazon is currently experiencing the highest rates of deforestation in a decade, leading to large-scale land-use changes. Roads have consistently been implicated as drivers of ongoing Amazon deforestation and may act as corridors to facilitate species invasions. <span>Long-term data, however, are necessary to determine how ecological succession alters avian communities following deforestation and whether established roads lead to a constant influx of new species. </span> </p> <p>We used data across nearly 40 years from a large-scale deforestation experiment in the central Amazon to examine the avian colonization process in a spatial and temporal framework, considering the role that roads may play in facilitating colonization.</p> <p>Since 1979, 139 species that are not part of the original forest avifauna have been recorded, including more secondary forest species than expected based on the regional species pool. Among the 35 species considered to have colonized and become established, a disproportionate number were secondary forest birds (63%), almost all of which first appeared during the 1980s. These new residents comprise about 13% of the current community of permanent residents.</p> <p><span>Widespread generalists associated with secondary forest colonized quickly following deforestation, with few new species added after the first decade, despite a stable road connection. Few species associated with riverine forest or specialized habitats colonized, despite road connection to their preferred source habitat. </span>Colonizing species remained restricted to anthropogenic habitats and did not infiltrate old-growth forests nor displace forest birds.</p> <p>Deforestation and expansion of road networks into <i>terra firme </i>rainforest will continue to create degraded anthropogenic habitat. Even so, the initial pulse of colonization by non-primary forest bird species was not the beginning of a protracted series of invasions in this study, and the process appears to be reversible by forest succession. </p>

New insights into the patterns and drivers of avian altitudinal migration from a growing crowdsourcing data source

Altitudinal migration is a common and important but understudied behavior in birds. Difficulty in characterizing avian altitudinal migration has prevented a comprehensive understanding of this behavior. To address this, we investigated the altitudinal migration patterns and explored potential drivers for a major proportion (~70%) of the entire resident bird community along an almost 4,000 m elevational gradient on the main island of Taiwan. Based on the occurrence records collected by citizen scientists, we examined the seasonal shifts in the center and the upper and lower boundaries of elevational distributions for 104 individual species. We then built phylogeny-controlled regression models to investigate the associations between the birds' seasonal distribution shifts and seven of their traits, and examined whether the observed shifts can be explained by three main hypotheses on potential drivers. Results showed that at least 60 species (58%) seasonally changed their distributions along elevations. While most of them (42 species) tended to move downhill in winter, a considerable number of species (14) tended to move uphill. While the species breeding at high or low elevations tended to move downhill in winter, those breeding at medium-low elevations tended to move or extend their distributions to higher elevations. Our regression models suggested that seasonal variations in climates and food availability could be major drivers of the behavior. However, the three hypotheses can only partially explain the observed downhill migration patterns and none of them can well explain the uphill patterns, indicating an important knowledge gap. This study investigated avian altitudinal migration from a new perspective with a novel and generalizable approach, and revealed interesting patterns that could be difficult to identify with conventional approaches. It demonstrated the power of citizen science data to provide new insights into this behavior by characterizing the general patterns and mechanisms across a large number of species.

Individual variability and versatility in an eco-evolutionary model of avian migration

<p>Seasonal migration is a complex and variable behavior with the potential to promote reproductive isolation. In Eurasian blackcaps (<em>Sylvia atricapilla</em>), a migratory divide in central Europe separating populations with southwest and southeast autumn routes may facilitate isolation, and individuals using new wintering areas in Britain show divergence from Mediterranean winterers. We tracked 100 blackcaps in the wild to characterize these strategies. Blackcaps to the west and east of the divide used predominantly SW and SE directions, respectively, but close to the contact zone many individuals took intermediate (S) routes. At 14.0ºE, we documented a sharp transition from SW to SE migratory directions across only 27 (10–86) km, implying a strong selection gradient across the divide. Blackcaps wintering in Britain took northwesterly migration routes from continental European breeding grounds. They originated from a surprisingly extensive area, spanning 2000 km of the breeding range. British winterers bred in sympatry with SW-bound migrants but arrived 9.8 days earlier on the breeding grounds, suggesting some potential for assortative mating by timing. Overall, our data reveal complex variation in songbird migration and suggest that selection can maintain variation in migration direction across short distances while enabling the spread of a novel strategy across a wide range.</p>
