Data for "Plant trait-environment relationships in tundra are consistent across spatial scales"
<p>These data and code are associated with the publication Rissanen et al. (2023) "<strong>Plant trait-environment relationships in tundra are consistent across spatial scales</strong>" published in Ecography (doi:10.1111/ecog.06397). Modelling data are provided separately for each scale and contain community weighted mean traits and environmental variables. Raster stacks of the spatially continuous environmental predictors were used to produce spatial predictions of trait variation at each scale. </p> <p>Provided R codes were used to model trait-environment relationships at the local (LOC), regional (REG) and subcontinental (SUB) scale. The data and analyses are described in the linked publication. The data should be sited properly.</p> <p> </p>

Biomass temporal stability increases at two spatial scales during secondary succession
<p>Ecological stability has long been considered to change over succession, but how secondary succession influences the relationship between diversity and temporal stability of biomass production at different spatial scales is poorly understood.</p> <p>We studied changes in plant diversity, functional temporal stability (biomass production) and compositional temporal stability (the latter two are hereafter referred to as functional stability and compositional stability) and explored the stabilizing roles of plant diversity at two spatial scales (small plots of 0.25 m2 area and large transects of 1.25 m2 area) during secondary succession in a subalpine meadow from 2003-2010.</p> <p>Our results showed that both plant diversity and functional and compositional stability increased at the small plot scale and large transect scale during secondary succession. As secondary succession proceeded, higher average alpha diversity (i.e., species diversity at the plot scale) led to higher functional and compositional stability at the plot scale by mainly species stability, predominantly contributing to higher functional and compositional stability at the large transect scale. In addition, Simpson-based beta diversity (i.e., compositional dissimilarity among communities within the same transect), while unaffected by succession, contributed to functional stability at the large transect scale by promoting asynchronous dynamics among communities.</p> <p><strong>Synthesis: </strong>Our study highlights the stabilizing effects of plant diversity across the two spatial scales during secondary succession. Our findings provide the first empirical evidence that biodiversity-mediated effects on ecosystem temporal stability strengthen over successional time, suggesting that the stabilizing effects of biodiversity should be considered across spatial and temporal scales in the face of global changes and biodiversity loss.</p>
Regenerating tropical forests are consistently affected by biological invasions across spatial scales
<p>Here we present our raw data (obtained via fieldwork) and all our analysis from the manuscript entitled “Regenerating tropical forests are consistently affected by biological invasions across spatial scales”. This manuscript is available as a preprint (<a href="https://doi.org/10.32942/X2SC76">https://doi.org/10.32942/X2SC76</a>) and as a published paper in Biological Invasions (https://doi.org/10.1007/s10530-024-03257-x). </p> <p>We investigated the effects of white-popinac (<em>Leucaena leucocephala</em> (Lam.) de Wit) invasions on regenerating areas of Atlantic Forest, considering local and regional scales, and beta-diversity.</p> <p>To reproduce the results, please see instructions in the READ_ME.txt file. </p>

The relationships of plant species occupancy to niches and traits vary with spatial scale
<p>Aim: Support for different underlying mechanisms of species occupancy is inconsistent, yet this could be related to spatial scale. Since abiotic filtering typically acts at broader scales than biotic interactions, we hypothesise that occupancy could be more driven by species' abiotic niche (i.e., tolerance and preference of abiotic conditions) at broad scales, whereas species' traits affecting competitive ability could be more important at fine scales. Here we test these hypotheses by assessing relationships of occupancy to niche and trait metrics across spatial scales.</p> <p>Location: Four study areas located north of Arctic Circle.</p> <p>Taxon: Vascular plants.</p> <p>Methods: We derived occupancy for 106 species at four spatial scales (Micro-scale with plot size of 0.04 m <sup>2</sup> and extent of 2 km, Local-scale with plot size of 4 m <sup>2</sup> and extent of 40 km, Regional-scale with plot size of 4 ha and extent of 800 km, and Polar-scale with plot size of 4 km <sup>2</sup> and extent of 5200 km). We then assessed using generalized additive models whether the relationships between occupancy and species' niche breadth, niche marginality, intraspecific trait variability (ITV) and trait distinctiveness vary across the scales.</p> <p>Results: At the finer scales, ITV (especially of specific leaf area) had the highest contribution with positive relationship in explaining occupancy. At the broader scales, occupancy was better explained by niche metrics. Especially at the broadest scale, the occupancy had a positive relationship with species' climatic tolerance.</p> <p>Main conclusions: Abiotic filtering, especially related to macro-climate, drives species occupancy at broader spatial scales while biotic interactions are relatively more important at local scales. This scale-dependency of factors behind species occupancy should be accounted for when, for example, planning conservation of rare species, forecasting invasions, or anticipating the effects of changing climate on biota at local versus global scales.</p>
Data for: Consistently heterogeneous structures observed at multiple spatial scales across fire-intact reference sites
<p>Geospatial polygons representing fire-suppressed control sites against which fire-intact reference sites were compared in Chamberlain et al. (2023). Control sites represent areas with 1) no record of fire history, 2) no record of late 20th century or early 21st century timber management, and 3) no "Fast Change" detected by the Landscape Change Monitoring System dataset. All sites are predominantly within the yellow pine and mixed-conifer zone of California's Sierra Nevada, USA. Polygon boundaries were defined using the NHDPlusV2 catchments, and were manually reshaped using aerial imagery to ensure that polygons were > 100 ha, represented primarily forested areas, and excluded major roads, infrastructure, and major rock outcrops.</p> <p>Detailed description of the methods used to produce this dataset provided in:<br> Chamberlain, C.P., Cova, G.R., Cansler, C.A., North, M.P., Meyer, M.D., Jeronimo, S.M.A., Kane, V.R., 2023.
