Glacially induced stresses and strains in Canada

<p>Dataset of finite element (FE) model input files for software Abaqus and rebound stress and strain tensor results in 2.5 km depth.</p> <p>FE_models.zip contains Abaqus input files for 7 different FE models of glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) in Canada. The GIA models use ice model f0050rn001_2022 with 147 time steps, which is a special version of the well known ICE-6G_C GIA-based reconstruction (Argus et al., 2014; Peltier et al., 2015). It combines University of Toronto Glacial Systems Model simulations of the second generation (2.0) with updated ice physics and simulation of surface hydrology (lakes and rivers) (Stuhne &amp; Peltier, 2016, 2017). The loading files also contain load changes from sea level variations corresponding to global ice load changes on the selected Earth model. There are 7 Earth models with different rheologic structure. Details can be found in the corresponding manuscript (Steffen &amp; Steffen, 2024).</p> <p>results.tar.gz contains the rebound stress and strain tensors in 2.5 km depth in Canada for each time step of a GIA model, resulting in 1029 (147*7) files named "{earth_model_name}_stress_strain_{time_in_1000_years_before_present}.dat". The files contain both the internal coordinates of the model and their corresponding longitude and latitude. Note that the grid is partly irregular as there are model parts which have a finer mesh. The format of the files is:<br>x-coordinate of model in km, y-coordinate of model in km, longitude in degree E, latitude in degree N, GIA stress tensor (S11, S22, S33, S12, S13, S23) in MPa and strain tensor (E11, E22, E33, E12, E13, E23) in strain.</p>

Combining transinfected Wolbachia and a genetic sexing strain to control Aedes albopictus in laboratory-controlled conditions

<p>The global expansion of <em>Aedes albopictus</em> has stimulated the development of environmental-friendly methods aiming at controlling disease transmission through the suppression of natural vector populations. Sterile male release programs are currently being deployed worldwide, and are challenged by the availability of an efficient sex separation that can be achieved mechanically at the pupal stage and/or by artificial intelligence at the adult stage, or through genetic sexing, which allows separating males and females at an early development stage. In this study, we combined the genetic sexing strain (GSS) previously established based on the linkage of dieldrin resistance to the male <em>locus</em> with a <em>Wolbachia</em> transinfected line. For this, we introduced either the <em>w</em>Pip-I or the <em>w</em>Pip-IV strain from <em>Culex pipiens </em>in an asymbiotic-Wolbachia-free <em>Ae</em>. <em>albopictus</em> line. We then measured the penetrance of CI and life history traits of both transinfected lines, selected the <em>w</em>Pip-IV line, and combined it with the GSS. Population suppression experiments demonstrated a 90% reduction in population size and a 50% decrease in hatching rate. Presented results showed that such a combination has a high potential in terms of vector control but also highlighted associated fitness costs, which should be reduced before large-scale field assay.</p>

Data from: Phenotypic resources immortalized in a panel of wild-derived strains of five species of house mice

<p>The house mouse, <em>Mus musculus</em>, is a widely used animal model in biomedical research, with classical laboratory strains (CLS) being the most frequently employed. However, the limited genetic variability in CLS hinders their applicability in evolutionary studies. Wild-derived strains (WDS), on the other hand, provide a suitable resource for such investigations. To assess the proportion of variation added by wild progenitors, we estimated phenotypic variation in 84 WDS representing 5 species (<em>M. musculus</em>, <em>M. spretus</em>, <em>M. spicilegus</em>, <em>M. macedonicus</em>, <em>M. caroli</em>), 3 subspecies (<em>M. m. musculus</em>, <em>M. m. domesticus</em>, <em>M. m. castaneus</em>), and compared it with 5 CLS. The spectrum of WDS captures long-term mouse evolution, estimated to be over 5 million years ago since the split of <em>M. caroli</em> from the remaining mouse species. All mice are housed in a conventional breeding facility (without a nanofilter barrier or specific-pathogen free condition) at the Institute of Vertebrate Biology, Czech Academy of Sciences, in Studenec. They are maintained under standard conditions: light/dark regime of 14/10 hours, temperatures of 23 ± 1 °C during summer (April-September) and 22 ± 1 °C during winter (October-March), respectively, and relative humidity within 40-70 %. Mice have access to food pellets and tap water <em>ad libitum</em>. Further data on this mouse repository and WDS can be obtained at <a href="https://housemice.cz/en/strains/">https://housemice.cz/en/strains/</a>.</p> <p>Morphological traits were measured in 4335 mice and include body weight, spleen weight, body length, tail length, weight of both ovaries, sperm count, the weight of testes, left epididymis, and seminal vesicles. Reproductive ability was estimated in 87 WDS and 8 CLS. This dataset was obtained from 90,077 offspring born to 8,298 mothers in 17,049 litters recorded in Studenec studbooks between 2000 and 2023. Reproductive performance was characterized by litter size, newborn mortality (calculated as the proportion of stillborn or cannibalized mice across all litters), and the number of generations produced per year. We also estimated the time since a WDS was established from wild progenitors until completing 20 generations of strict brother-sister mating, i.e., the generation at which a strain of mice can be considered inbred.</p> <p>Although CLS resemble <em>M. m. domesticus</em> and<em> M. m. musculus </em>WDS, they differ from them in 8 and 11 out of 15 phenotypic traits, respectively. The data suggest that WDS can be a useful tool in evolutionary studies, providing a basis for comparative analyses with other mammal taxa, particularly classical laboratory mice. The detected stunning phenotypic variation supplemented by genetic variation have great potential for medical applications.</p>

High resolution digital image correlation (HRDIC) was used to measure the differences in strain localisation at the microstructural length-scale. A nanoscale speckle pattern was used to allow small changes in strain to be detected and resolved within a single individual lamella and at pre-existing crack locations around the defect. Strain localisation was observed around the defect and formed well below the macroscopic yield stress. In contrast, minimal deformation was found in the bulk at this stress level. Following further deformation into the plastic regime, the strain localisation around the keyhole became more heterogenous with a distinct strain field. A large amount of strain localisation and &lt;c+a&gt; slip was observed either side of the defect normal to the loading direction compared to relatively little in the regions close to the defect in line with the loading direction. This HRDIC observation was consistent with finite element analysis of the expected strain fields around the defect both below and above the yield point. Furthermore, micro-cracks were observed in &alpha;p/&alpha;p and &alpha;p/&beta;t interfaces in both regions with the more pronounced strain fields around the defect leading to an increased number of long micro-cracks than in the bulk. The formation mechanisms of micro-cracks have been discussed, emphasising the role of localised strain caused by the defect.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Simulations of Nanocrystalline Iron Formation under High Shear Strain

<p>High-shear methods have long been used in experiments to refine grain structures in metals, yet the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. We demonstrate a refinement process using molecular dynamic simulations of iron, wherein nanocrystalline structures are generated from initially perfect lattices under high-shear strain. The simulation cells undergo a highly disordered state, followed by an atomic reordering and grain coarsening, resulting in nanograins. We explore the dependence on parameters such as temperature, heat dissipation rate, shear strain rate, and carbon impurity concentration. Higher temperatures lead to the formation of larger and longer grains. The faster heat dissipation sample initially yields more small grains, but their number subsequently reduces, and is lower than the slower heat dissipation sample at approximately gamma = 1.5. Slower strain rates do not promote nanograin formation. The presence of carbon impurities appears to have little effect on grain formation. This detailed analysis affords insight into the mechanisms that control the formation of nanograins under high-shear conditions.</p>

<p>This record contains raw datarelated to article &quot;Functional characterization and immunomodulatory properties of Lactobacillus helveticus strains isolated from Italian hard cheeses &quot;</p> <p>Lactobacillus helveticus carries many properties such as the ability to survive gastrointestinal transit, modulate the host immune response, accumulate biopeptides in milk, and adhere to the epithelial cells that could contribute to improving host health. In this study, the applicability as functional cultures of four L. helveticus strains isolated from Italian hard cheeses was investigated. A preliminary strain characterization showed that the ability to produce folate was generally low while antioxidant, proteolytic, peptidase, and &beta;-galactosidase activities resulted high, although very variable, between strains. When stimulated moDCs were incubated in the presence of live cells, a dose-dependent release of both the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-12p70 and the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10, was shown for all the four strains. In the presence of cell-free culture supernatants (postbiotics), a dose-dependent, decrease of IL-12p70 and an increase of IL-10 was generally observed. The immunomodulatory effect took place also in Caciotta-like cheese made with strains SIM12 and SIS16 as bifunctional (i.e., immunomodulant and acidifying) starter cultures, thus confirming tests in culture media. Given that the growth of bacteria in the cheese was not necessary (they were killed by pasteurization), the results indicated that some constituents of non-viable bacteria had immunomodulatory properties. This study adds additional evidence for the positive role of L. helveticus on human health and suggests cheese as a suitable food for delivering candidate strains and modulating their anti-inflammatory properties.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>
