Dendrometer studies for stand volume and height measurements of trees of the western US, 1976 to 1993
Dendrometry is used to get an accurate estimate of volume and height for individual trees. Volume tables or regressions may be generated. This method accurately accounts for taper by measuring at consecutive points up the bole.
Annual tree productivity in permanent plots within the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest
Tree cores were taken from trees in permanent plots within the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest to estimate annual bole biomass increment. The purpose of measuring this was to determine how many trees need to be sampled within a stand in order to determine NPP accurately. Increment cores were extracted from all trees greater than 5 cm diameter at breast height in each site and measured for annual growth increment (cm). This data was used to explore a method for using increment cores in combination with long-term permanent plots and remeasurement records to estimate annual bole biomass increment.
Baltimore Ecosystem Study: Riparian vegetation data - 1 of 11 - 1999 and 2004 trees
This is one of 11 datasets generated in a study of riparian vegetation in the Baltimore Ecosystem Study from 1999-2004. Comparisons of vegetation between the rural/suburban (upper) and urban (lower) sections of the watershed show distinct patterns across an urban to rural gradient. In the lower, more urban section of the watershed, wetland tree species are either absent or occur as small stems while upland species are abundant, in mixed sizes. A comparison of the number of wetland and upland species in the mostly urbanized Gwynns Falls riparian zone with non-urbanized Piedmont floodplains throughout Maryland shows approximately twice as many upland species in the urban floodplain than in non-urbanized floodplains. The majority of shrubs in riparian zones through the Gwynns Falls are upland species. For herbaceous species, frequencies of upland and wetland species are about equal in the upper and middle regions of the watershed, but upland species are more common in the more urban lower floodplains by a factor of greater than two.
Tree regeneration after fire: Delta 1994 burn surveys, live spruce seedling diameters
Data for this study were collected in 2001 and 2002 by Jill Johnstone (University of Alaska Fairbanks) and Eric Kasischke (University of Maryland). Sites were located within the perimeter of the 1994 burn southeast of Delta Junction Alaska, USA, bordering the Alaska Highway to the North and the Gerstle River to the West. Sites were selected from satellite classifications prepared by Eric Kasischke to represent different levels of burn severity and post-fire vegetation canopy greenness (NDVI). Site selection was constrained by road access, and only areas where all trees had been killed by the fire were selected. At each site, a central point was located in an area of visually homogeneous vegetation. Five parallel transects, each 50 m long, were laid out as follows: 1) the first transect started at the central point and followed a randomly-selected compass direction, 2) two additional transects were established parallel to the first, but at a random distance from the central transect up to 25 m distant. Vegetation was sampled in a 2-m wide belt centered on each transect, and soil samples were made at intervals along the transect line. Vegetation measurements included: a) basal diameters of all pre-fire trees greater than 1.3 m in height, b) counts of all post-fire tree seedlings, and c) basal diameters of tree seedlings and willows, measured in a randomly chosen 5x2 m portion of each transect. General notes were made on visual percent cover of different vegetation growth forms at the site. Destructive measurements of tree seedlings and willows made in 2001 were used to develop allometric equations to predict dry biomass from basal diameter. Measurements of soil organic layer depth were made at 5 m intervals with the use of a spade to excavate small chunks of sod. Tree stand structure summary at Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest LTER sites
We measure trees and shrubs within 50 x 60 m permanent plots at LTER research sites within the Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest, as a means to monitor vegetation change and to estimate productivity. The 27 LTER research sites represent three replicates each of six successional stages of primary succession on the floodplain of the Tanana River and three stages of succession following wildfire in the uplands. All trees and tall shrubs within the plot are stem mapped, and the dbh is measured at least every 5 years. The condition of each tree is assessed at the time of measurement and following major disturbance events. Band dendrometers have been placed on select trees at each site where applicable. Litterfall and seedfall are collected and measured annually. White spruce seedlings are mapped and their heights measured every 2 years within the tree plots at younger successional stages. The DBH of alders and willows are measured. Shrub heights are measured annually at young floodplain stands. Changes in species composition through succession are a function of life history traits modified by facilitative and competitive interactions. Vegetation-caused changes in resource (light, nutrients, and moisture)availability during succession control vegetation biomass, productivity, and organic matter and nutrient distribution.
Air Temperature, Soil Temperature, Precipitation, Snow Depth at Long Term Tree Growth Sites; 1968-Present : Weekly
Part of the Long Term Tree Growth study. This dataset is an accumulation of various manual measurements made on a weekly to monthly basis. It originally included snow stakes, rain buckets, max/min thermometers and a series of soil temperature sensors. Over the years equipment has changed. The soil temperature sensors exceeded their field life during the 1990's and were dropped from the study. In 2001 logging air temperature and relative humidity sensors were installed and those measurements were discontinued. In 2002 logging rain gauges were installed to replace the manual buckets. Both styles were during that growing season and the manual buckets were removed before the 2003 field season. All that remains active in this dataset are the snow stake measurements.

Tree ring width data for trees adjacent to the BBC collapse scar
This data set contains ring width data for trees adjacent to the BBC collapse scar. We used dendrochronology to link paleoecological data with modern observations of the response of this system to fire. Tree ring analysis provides a record of the response of the black spruce trees to changing climate and ongoing thermokarst, allowing for speculation about the response of this landscape to future climate change. We harvested twenty-one fire-killed tree cross-sections from the margin of the collapse and in the surrounding burn in the growing season of 2004. We measured ring width (sliding stage, Velmex Inc., Bloomfield, NY, USA, resolution: 0.001mm) for two radial transects of the tree cross-sections. To remove the age-related variation in growth rate, we crossdated trees with Cofecha and standardized ring-widths with the program ARSTAN (Richard Holmes, Laboratory of Tree Ring Research, University of Arizona). We recorded the presence of compression-wood for each tree ring, an indicator of leaning which is interpreted to be related to frost-heaving and permafrost collapse (Camill and Clark, 1998). This data set includes temperature and precipitation data from a composite of climate data from the University Experiment Station (1906-1947) and Fairbanks International Airport (1948-2000) (Wilmking et al., 2004).
Tree heights and diameters: Wickersham fire sites (at the Viereck thaw probe locations), 1995 and 2004
In June of 1971, the Wickersham fire burned 6313 ha in an open black spruce forest underlain with permafrost and provided an opportunity to study fire and fireline effects on the rate and patterns of permafrost, soil, and vegetation recovery. When wildfire burns through a northern black spruce forest the degree of soil organic layer consumption greatly influences the post-fire community characteristics. The construction of firelines with heavy machinery involves the complete removal of vegetation and the soil organic layer down to mineral soil and likewise affects the community characteristics after fire and fire suppression. This long-term study is part of a comparison between the vegetative communities of firelines, burned, and unburned open black spruce forests underlain by ice rich permafrost. In this study, tree diameters and heights were measured in an unburned control plot and in a heavily burned plot. There were no trees to measure in the fireline plot. Tree heights and diameters at breast height were measured for tree species in the heavily burned and unburned control sites on the east side of Cushman Creek of the Wickersham Fire Sites. This dataset focuses on the trees of the east side sites (2004 and 2130) to corroborate the detailed studies of active layer depths and fireline surface level changes previously published (Viereck, 1982; also see datasets in related material section) and in preparation.

Earlier records are available in the BNZ long-term vegetation database. This dataset documents tree seedling/sapling and shrub measurements made in 2002. Contains counts of total numbers of cones on individual trees (black spruce only), along with tree height.

Stem diameter of trees and shrubs in thinleaf alder sites along the Tanana River floodplains and severity of stem canker infection of alder in 2006.
This dataset includes the stem diameter of each woody plant >2m tall, by species (or genus), found in each of the thinleaf alder sites we established in the Tanana River floodplains in 2006, as well as an assessment of the severity of canker infection in each thinleaf alder stem. Species (or genus), diameter at breast height (dbh), and severity of canker infection are the variables included here. This dataset can be used in conjunction with a dataset of alder size/age relationships (DN_alder_stand_structure2.xls) to estimate the age structure of alder stands.
Alaska 2004 Burns: Densities of tree seedlings after fire; measured in 2006, 2008, 2011, and 2017 by Joint Fire Science Program
This dataset contains counts and densities of tree seedlings that established naturally in the years after the 2004 burns in interior Alaska. Records are from a network of 90 sites established in 2005 along the Steese, Taylor, and Dalton highways as part of a Joint Fire Science Project. Counts are reported here for sample years in 2006, 2008, 2011, and 2017.

Data included in this file were obtained from 1993, 1997, 2000, 2004 and 2008 inventories, generating 4 growth increments between 1997 and 2008. Data are reported by age cohort, and include NPP increments (averaged across all trees within each landscape and successional stage) for all trees of known age (determined from coring).

White Spruce NPP per tree calculated from dendrometer bands annually from 1994 to 2008
This data set is derived from BNZ LTER inventory plots, where band dendrometers are in place on trees within each diameter size class (typically 10 trees per 10 cm increment diameter size class). Dendrometer bands are read in the fall each year. Biomass is calculated from allometric equations, from which annual biomass increments are derived. Data are reported as the average annual growth per tree across all trees within a given landscape and successional stage and reported as kg biomass/tree/year.
