Discovery proteomics by mass spectrometry comparing secreted proteins from young and old mouse lung mesenchymal stromal cells
<p>Lung mesenchymal stromal cells (L-MSCs) were isolated from the young ( 3 months) and old (22-24 months) mice (N = 4 each) following collagenase digestion of the lungs and anchorage-dependent growth. Culture media was collected from young and old L-MSCs (10^6 cells) grown in culture for 24 hrs in serum-free condition. Culture media was then centrifuged to remove any cellular debris. Five (5) ml of supernatants were concentrated using 3kDa Molecular weight cut-off filters, and 10 micrograms of proteins were <span><span><span><span><span>run as multiple MW 1D PAGE fractions using a standard </span><span>GeLC</span><span> approach with a </span><span>nano</span><span>-HPLC in-line with a </span><span>Velos</span><span> Pro Orbitrap MS. </span></span></span></span></span><span><span><span><span><span>Individual data files were searched using </span><span>Sequest</span><span>, the results were then combined for each sample, followed by grouping, filtering, and quantifying by normalized spectral counts. </span></span></span></span></span></p> <p> </p>
The awareness, visibility and support for young carers across Europe: a Delphi study
<p>Across Europe, young carers (YCs) and their need for support receive limited attention in the media, policy and empirical research, even though, similar to adult carers, they also provide care to ill family members. The Delphi study, a qualitative research methodology, which provides the focus for this article, had the overall aim of exploring existing successful strategies to support YCs. Compared to YCs, even less is known about adolescent young carers (AYCs), a group that is in a critical life transition phase. The study forms part of an EU Horizon 2020 funded research project on AYCs aged 15–17 years old. A two-round Delphi study was conducted with 66 experts on YCs from 10 European countries. Topics included: (i) visibility and awareness-raising of YCs at local, regional, and national levels, (ii) current interventions to support YCs, and (iii) future strategies to support YCs. Experts reported a lack of visibility and awareness about YCs in general, and AYCs in particular. Although awareness is slowly increasing in most countries, with the UK ranked highest, experts acknowledged that it remains challenging to identify YCs in many countries. Furthermore, the level and type of support available for YCs differs, with most countries mainly offering support on a local level. Diverse views were expressed regarding future strategies to support YCs. Experts highlighted the importance of specific legislation to formalise the rights of YCs, and the issue of whether young people should be safeguarded from caregiving or if this should be considered part of regular family life. They also emphasised the relevance of available integrated support services for YCs, including schools, family, health and social care. In most European countries, there is a lack of awareness and visibility on YCs. Identification of YCs is a crucial first step and there is need for a common definition of YCs, together with greater opportunities for young adults to identify themselves as YCs.</p>

ISIEA: An image database of social inclusion and exclusion in Asian young adults
<p> </p> <p>Here we introduce an open-access, free, and standardized set of image stimuli, the image database of social inclusion/exclusion in Asian young adults (ISIEA), which is developed and validated by our lab for academic purposes in the field of social & affective processing especially social inclusion/exclusion studies.</p> <p> </p> <p>This database contains a set of 164 images depicting social interaction scenarios under three categories of social contexts (social exclusion, social neutral, and social inclusion). Standardized assessments are provided for each image, including the traditional emotional dimensions of arousal and valence, the inclusion score which evaluates the level of perceived social inclusion, and the vicarious feeling scale which evaluates the level of affective feeling when you imagine yourself as the highlighted person in the image. Visual physical properties of each image are also provided, including luminance, contrast, complexity, and color parameters. Additionally, we offer the ratings of face component and context component for each image (see Zheng et al., 2021 below for details). These parameters (Appendix 1) would be helpful for image selection and control of confounding factors.</p> <p> </p> <p>Note: This database is freely provided for only academic purpose (including laboratory research, journal publication, academic posters, conference exhibitions, etc.). Any commercial or other non-academic use is not allowed. Social and abiotic factors differentially affect plumage ornamentation of young and old males in an Australian songbird
<p>Both abiotic environmental conditions and variation in social environment are known to impact the acquisition of sexual signals. However, the influences of abiotic environmental and social factors are rarely compared to each other. Here we test the relative importance of these factors in determining whether and when male red-backed fairywrens (<i>Malurus melanocephalus</i>) moult into a known sexual signal, ornamented breeding plumage. One-year-old male red-backed fairywrens vary in whether or not they acquire ornamentation, whereas males age two and older vary in their timing of ornament acquisition. It is unclear whether these processes are determined by the same or different factors and we examine both events using a combination of long-term breeding records and non-breeding social networks. We found that one-year-old males that paired prior to the start of the breeding season were more likely to acquire ornamented plumage, but rainfall did not influence whether one-year-old males acquired ornamented plumage. Thus, for young individuals, social cues appear to play a larger role than abiotic environmental factors in determining ornament acquisition. For older males, timing of ornamented plumage acquisition was constrained by rainfall, with drier non-breeding seasons leading to poorer physiological condition and later moult dates. Thus, sexual signal variation in older males appears to be a condition-dependent trait, driven by abiotic environmental and physiological factors rather than social cues. These findings reveal that factors influencing sexual signal expression can vary with age when age classes exhibit different forms of signal variation. Our results suggest that social environment may drive sexual signal variation in young individuals, whereas abiotic environmental variation may drive sexual signal variation in older individuals.</p>

Wild kangaroos become more social when caring for young and may maintain long-term affiliations with popular individuals
<p>Kangaroos are an iconic group of Australian fauna. Despite considerable research on kangaroo behaviour, key gaps remain in our understanding of their social organization in the wild. In particular, it remains largely unknown whether kangaroos form long-term social bonds and what factors might prompt individuals to associate or dissociate from one another. Over 6 years, we monitored the social affiliations of individually identified eastern grey kangaroos, Macropus giganteus, in a large wild population. We investigated the short-term and long-term relationships of kangaroos and the extent those relationships varied with age, sex and reproductive state. We found evidence that long-term relationships among eastern grey kangaroos are possible, especially between adult females. Those individuals that were more sociable within years were also more likely to establish affiliations across years. Contrary to previous studies, we observed females actively associating with other mothers in the years in which they had young. These data suggest that the fission-fusion dynamics of eastern grey kangaroo social behaviour allow females to modulate their social position with conspecifics according to their current reproductive state. We highlight the adaptive implications of the formation of long-term bonds and the changes in social behaviour observed in females.</p>

Deidentified public survey data for: Patterns and perceptions of nicotine use among U.S. adolescents and young adults receiving medication treatment for opioid use disorder
<p>Nicotine use among U.S. youth is cause for concern, as previous studies have shown that nicotine use in adolescence increases the risk of developing substance use disorders later in life. This exploratory study aimed to understand patterns of nicotine use and perceptions of various nicotine products among adolescents and young adults (AYA) receiving medication treatment for opioid use disorder (MOUD). We administered an adapted version of the National Youth Tobacco Survey via REDCap to AYA (n=32) receiving outpatient care in the Medication-Assisted Treatment of Addiction at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, U.S.A. Thirty (97%) participants had tried a combustible cigarette and 27 (90%) had tried an electronic cigarette. By age 13, nineteen (61%) participants had tried combustible cigarettes and eight (25%) had tried opioids. Twenty-two (71%) participants reported smoking combustible cigarettes every day for the past 30 days, and 15 (48%) reported smoking more than 10 cigarettes per day on average. Only ten (32%) participants reported e-cigarette use in the last 30 days. Participants universally agreed that tobacco products are dangerous, and twenty (67%) current tobacco users reported that they planned to quit in the next year. Nicotine use patterns among AYA receiving MOUD differ from that previously shown in the general population, primarily by high prevalence of nicotine use in early adolescence and high current combustible cigarette use. Interventions such as universal screening for nicotine use before age 13 and tailored smoking cessation programs for AYA with OUD may help optimize care for these individuals.</p>

<p>This is the dataset used in "Young mixed planted forests store more carbon than monocultures: a meta-analysis" published in Frontiers in Forests & Global Change. </p><p>The dataset contains carbon or biomass data for mixed and monoculture planted forests from 21 sites with a global coverage. We provide summary data necessary to conduct a meta-analysis: mean, standard deviation, and sample size, for each unique mixed and monoculture treatment at each study site. We indicate whether the values provided are aboveground carbon or biomass.</p><p>For each treatment we also provide the species richness, age and species. We provide the longitude, latitude and country for each study site.</p><p>Our study also assessed the effect of study design (experiment vs existing plantation), species origin (native vs non-native/mixed), and presence of nitrogen fixer in the mixture (N fixer present vs absent), we record the value of each of these factors. Finally, we categorised a subset of monocultures as commercial species monocultures based on the species use in that location. </p>
