Remote sensing of the light-obscuring smoke properties in real-scale fires using a photometric measurement method

<p>This data set complements the article <a href="https://doi.org/10.1007/s10694-023-01470-z">https://doi.org/10.1007/s10694-023-01470-z</a>.</p> <p>The data set contains the raw image data of three representative experiments and the corresponding input configuration data files for the LEDSA simulations.</p> <p>The data set contains:</p> <p>- The processed LEDSA simulation data of all experiments, mainly consisting of the measured and normalized intensities of all LEDs and the computed extinction coefficients according to the applied layer discretization (ledsa_simulations.zip).</p> <p>- The recorded measurement data of all experiments from three MIREX devices (MIREX.zip).</p> <p>- An exemplary data set consisting of the LEDSA raw data as RAW image files from three representative experiments in shortened form, containing every third image (image_data_{...}.zip).</p> <p>- LEDSA Input and Config files for analysis and simulation of the provided exemplary image data (ledsa_simulations_short.zip).</p> <p>- Python scripts for reading and post-processing the LESDA simulation data (postprocessing_tools.zip)</p> <p>- Juptyter Lab Python scripts that have been used to create the plots in the associated paper (data_analysis.zip).</p> <p>- The figures from the associated paper (figures.zip).</p> <p>Notes</p> <p>In order to run the Python scripts in Juptyer Labs properly, the given directory structure must be maintained, resulting when all archives are unpacked on the same hierarchical level.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>The authors gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Passive Open-Path Fouriertransform Infrared spectroscopy (OP-FTIR) measurements in the Arctic environment of Ny Ålesund / Svalbard 2023

<p>In the Polar MOSES campaign 2023, a ground-based remote sensing method &ndash; OP-FTIR spectroscopy- which is proven to be a flexible long-path technique for the characterization of larger areas was used. This method is able to simultaneously detect various volatile atmospheric compounds relevant for environmental assessment with a single rapid measurement. Many greenhouse gas molecules (e.g., CO<sub>2</sub>, H<sub>2</sub>O, CH<sub>4</sub>) have unique signatures (absorption or emission bands) in the measured spectral IR range. IR spectroscopy allows spatial and non-invasive characterization of emissions and is a useful method to capture emissions along the coastline, both seaward and landward.</p> <p>The passive technique was applied in a mobile mode to obtain IR spectra at different relevant locations. In order to investigate the near surface atmospheric composition, the mobile passive OP-FTIR spectroscopic scanning measurements was executed with Bruker RAPID devices to cover marine and terrestrial areas. The RAPID passive detection systems was deployed for 360&deg; remote sensing of threats at distances up to 5000 m. Initially, the survey&#39;s primary objective was to qualitatively interpret spectra, enabling the identification of emission sources and the characterization of the heterogeneous emission pattern. This was achieved through the measurements in different directions to allow the direct comparisons of the various compartments under investigation and their potential interactions.</p>

Electromagnetic Induction Measurements near Ny Alesund

<p>Electromagnetic induction is a non-invasive mapping technique used in a variety of applications including geological mapping and civil engineering, agriculture and forestry, environmental monitoring, groundwater protection, mineral exploration and archaeology.&nbsp; Electromagnetic induction is mainly used to measure the (apparent) electrical conductivity of the subsurface, which depends on various soil properties such as clay content, water content and salinity. The nature and strength of the relationships between electrical conductivity and soil properties are site-specific.</p> <p>The instrument used, the EM38-MK2, measures both the quadrature (conductivity) and the inphase (magnetic susceptibility) components at two different depths, all at the same time, without the need for ground contact. The aim of the measurements was to improve the understanding of thaw-driven landscape dynamics in permafrost regions and to assess the vulnerability of permafrost to thaw.</p> <p>The measurements were carried out in August 2023 in the vicinity of the Ny Alesund research station in Svalbard, in particular in the vicinity of the Bayelva long-term observatory site. The data are raw, no processing has been done. A detailed metadata description is available in the pdf format.</p>

Angle Dependent Spectral Reflectance Material Dataset based on 945 nm Time-of-Flight Camera Measurements

<p>The dataset contains angle dependent spectral reflectance measurements of materials in the infrared spectrum at a wavelength of 945 nm taken by a time-of-flight camera for an angle range of 0&deg; to 80&deg; in incremental steps of 10&deg;,&nbsp;mounted on an adjustable angle measurement device.</p> <p>Each data file is structured in columns with two parameters: reflectance (%)&nbsp;and incidence angle (&deg;).</p> <p>For each single material measurement a description file is attached in a&nbsp;separate ZIP-file.</p> <p>The extended dataset include new materials such as vehicle varnish and moss rubber. This new version further includes pictures for almost each of the measurements to depict the measurement setup and environmental conditions during the data acquisition. Data From: Effects of measurement methods and growing conditions on phenotypic expression of photosynthesis in seven diverse rice genotypes

<p class="p1"><strong>Introduction: </strong>Light response curves are widely used to quantify phenotypic expression of photosynthesis by measuring a single sample and sequentially altering light intensity within a chamber (sequential method) or by measuring different samples that are each acclimated to a different light level (nonsequential method). Both methods are often conducted in controlled environments to achieve steady-state results, and neither method involves equilibrating the entire plant to the speci<span class="s1">fi</span>c light level.</p> <p class="p1"><strong>Methods: </strong>Here, we compare sequential and non-sequential methods in controlled (greenhouse), semi-controlled (plant grown in growth chamber and acclimated to <span class="s1">fi</span>eld conditions 2-3 days before measurements), and <span class="s1">fi</span>eld environments. We selected seven diverse rice genotypes (<span class="s1">fi</span>ve genotypes from the USDA rice minicore collection: 310588, 310723, 311644, 311677, 311795; and 2 additional genotypes: Nagina 22 and Zhe 733) to understand (1) the limitations of different methods, and (2) phenotypic plasticity of photosynthesis in rice grown under different environments.</p> <p class="p1"><strong>Results:</strong> Our results show that the non-sequential method was time-ef<span class="s1">fi</span>cient and captured more variability of <span class="s1">fi</span>eld conditions than the sequential method, but the model parameters were generally similar between the two methods except for the maximum photosynthesis rate (A<sub>max</sub>). A<span class="s2"><sub>max</sub> </span>was signi<span class="s1">fi</span>cantly lower across all genotypes under greenhouse conditions compared to the growth chamber and <span class="s1">fi</span>eld conditions consistent with prior work, but surprisingly the apparent quantum yield (α) and the mitochondrial respiration (R<sub><span class="s2">d</span></sub>) were generally not different among growing environments or measurement methods.</p> <p class="p1"><strong>Discussion: </strong>Our results suggest that <span class="s1">fi</span>eld conditions are best suited to quantify phenotypic differences across different genotypes, and the nonsequential method was better at capturing the variability in photosynthesis.</p>

Dataset for the absolute frequency measurement of IT-Yb1 relative to IT-CsF2

<p>Dataset of the comparison of the atomic clocks at&nbsp; INRIM between June 2021 and September 2022. Results discussed in Goti et al., Absolute frequency measurement of a Yb optical clock at the limit of the Cs fountain<em>, Metrologia, </em><em>60</em>, 035002 (2023).</p> <p>The involved atomic clocks are the Cs fountains&nbsp; IT-CsF2 and the Yb optical lattice clock IT-Yb1.</p> <p>Data is organized in folders. The data in the folder named &#39;INRIM_ITYb1-INRIM_ITCsF2-USO&#39; is obtained making use of an optical-to-microwave chain.&nbsp; The data in the folder &#39;INRIM_ITYb1-INRIM_ITCsF2&#39; is collected using an hydrogen maser as transfer oscillator. In the folders data is separated is one file per day. Data is reported as fractional frequency ratios in bins of 864 s. Timetags are reported in modified Julian date (MJD). A validity flag is given where 0 = invalid, valid otherwise. Each folder includes a yaml file with metadata required for generalized data processing as in [Lodewyck et al., 2020]. Body size measurements and stomach contents of Alligator mississippiensis on Jekyll Island, Georgia

<p>Human-driven land use change can fundamentally alter ecological communities, especially the diversity and abundance of large-bodied predators. Yet despite the important roles large-bodied predators play in structuring communities through feeding, there have been only a few investigations of how the feeding patterns of large-bodied predators change in human-dominated landscapes. One group of large-bodied predators that has been largely overlooked in the context of land use change is the crocodilians. To help fill these gaps we studied the feeding patterns of juvenile American alligators (<em>Alligator mississippiensis</em>) on neighboring barrier islands on the southeast coast of Georgia, USA. Jekyll Island has multiple golf courses and substantial amounts of human activity, while Sapelo Island does not have any golf courses and a much smaller amount of human activity. We found that juvenile alligator populations on both islands ate the same types of prey but in vastly different quantities. Sapelo Island alligators primarily consumed crustaceans while alligators that lived on Jekyll Island's golf courses ate mostly insects/arachnids. Furthermore, the Jekyll Island alligators exhibited a much more generalist feeding pattern (individuals mostly ate the same types of prey in the same quantities) than the more specialized Sapelo Island alligators (diets were more varied across individuals). The most likely explanation for our results is that alligators living on golf courses have different habitat use patterns and have access to different prey communities relative to alligators in more natural habitats. Thus, land use change can strongly alter the feeding patterns of large-bodied predators and, as a result, may affect their body condition, exposure to human-made chemicals, and role within ecological communities.</p>
