SELECTED PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF SOIL UNDER DIFFERENT AGRICULTURAL LAND-USE TYPES IN ILE-IFE, NIGERIA
<p>The study examined changes in soil properties under different agricultural land-use types. This is with the view to extending knowledge on the nature of soil properties under long-term land-use practices. Six land-use types were considered; paddock, continuously cropped, secondary forest, teak, oil palm and cacao plantations. Soil strength and saturated hydraulic conductivity were determined at two soil depths (0-15 and 15-30 cm) in-situ. Soil samples were collected to determine particle size distribution, bulk density, aggregate stability, pH, organic carbon, cation exchange capacity, total nitrogen and available phosphorus.</p>

An in situ observation datset of soil hydraulic properties and soil moisture in a high and cold mountainous area on the northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau
<p>Based on soil profile data at depths of 5 cm and 25 cm from 238 sampling sites, and on soil data from 32 soil moisture monitoring stations at depths of 5 cm, 15 cm, 25 cm, 40 cm, and 60 cm, we have compiled a soil hydraulic properties and soil moisture dataset for a high and cold mountainous area, Northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Specifically, the soil hydraulic properties include clay, silt, sand, soil organic carbon, soil saturated hydraulic conductivity, soil water retention curve parameters (Van Genuchten model) and soil bulk density.</p>
Correlation between the Covalency and the Thermometric Properties of Yb3+/Er3+ Codoped Nanocrystalline Orthophosphates
<p>Lanthanide-doped NaYF4 nanoparticles are most frequently studied host materials for numerous biomedical applications. Although efficient upconversion can be obtained in fluoride nanomaterials and good homogeneity of size and morphology is achieved, they are not very predestined for extensive material optimization toward enhanced features and functions. Here, we study the impact of rare-earth metals RE = Y, Lu, La, and Gd ions within Yb3+/Er3+ codoped nanocrystalline REPO4 orthophosphates. The enhanced luminescent thermometry features were found to be in relation to the covalency of RE3+− O2− bonds being modulated by these optically inactive rare-earth ion substitutes. Up to 30% relative sensitivity enhancement was found (from ca. 3.0 to ca. 3.8%/K at −150 °C) by purposefully increasing the covalence of the RE3+−O2− bond. These studies form the basis for intentional optimization thermal couple-based luminescent thermometers such as Yb3+- Er3+ upconverting ratiometric thermometer.</p>
Spectral and thermometric properties altering through crystal field strength modification and host material composition in luminescent thermometers based on Fe3+ doped AB2O4 type nanocrystals (A= Mg, Ca; B=Al, Ga)
<p>The growing interest in the use of luminescence thermometry for noncontact temperature reading in very specific conditions imposes the need to develop an approach allowing modification of the luminescence parameters of the thermometer accordingly to the requirements. Therefore, in response to these expectations, this manuscript reports an approach to modulating the spectral position and the luminescence thermal quenching rate of Fe<sup>3+</sup> ions by modifying the crystal field strength and the host material composition of nanocrystalline AB<sub>2</sub>O<sub>4</sub> type nanocrystals (A= Mg, Ca; B=Al, Ga). It was proved that in a group of MgAl<sub>2</sub>O<sub>4</sub>, MgGa<sub>2</sub>O<sub>4</sub>, CaAl<sub>2</sub>O<sub>4</sub>, and CaGa<sub>2</sub>O<sub>4</sub> nanocrystals doped with Fe<sup>3+</sup> ions the emission spectral range, as well as the relative thermal sensitivity (from 0.2%/<sup>o</sup>C for MAO to 2.07%/<sup>o</sup>C for CGO) and the operating temperature range, can be easily modified by the host material composition. For instance, a maximal relative thermal sensitivity of 2.58%/<sup>o</sup>C is obtained for Fe<sup>3+</sup>, Tb<sup>3+</sup> co-doped CaAl<sub>2</sub>O<sub>4 </sub>nanocrystals. The proposed approach is a step toward the intentional designing of the highly sensitive luminescent thermometer.</p>

The blinking properties resulting from these transitions can be monitored in a broadly applicable manner, and under biologically relevant conditions. By TRAST studies of NAO in small unilamellar vesicles (SUVs) we show that these blinking properties are highly environment sensitive, specifically reflecting local oxygen concentrations, redox conditions, membrane charge, fluidity and lipid compositions. In SUVs containing the phospholipid cardiolipin (CL) the NAO blinking properties depend not only on the concentration of the CL added, but also on the CL acyl chain composition. The blinking also reflects hydroxyl ion dependent transitions to and from the NAO doublet radical. This makes it possible to monitor local pH and buffering properties, from a 3D bulk buffer above the membrane, or from a 2D buffer at the membrane surface itself. Finally, by live cell TRAST imaging, we show that the fluorescence blinking properties of NAO can also be imaged in a spatially resolved manner, and that this commercially available location-specific fluorophore thereby can be turned into a multi-parametric intracellular sensing probe. This study demonstrates new possibilities for fundamental membrane studies in artificial vesicles and live cells, using existing fluorophore markers, monitoring parameters and conditions of large biological relevance, which are difficult to retrieve by other means.</p>
