Perennial species canopy cover across grazed/ungrazed fencelines at the Jornada Basin LTER, 1986-ongoing
This ongoing data set contains percent canopy cover estimates of perennial plant species from transects that cross a grazed/ungrazed boundary fenceline of a single exclosure on the New Mexico State University Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center in Dona Ana County, New Mexico, USA. In the spring of 1982, as part of the establishment of the Jornada Long-Term Ecological Research site in southern New Mexico, a 135 ha portion of a 1500 ha, internally drained, watershed was exclosed from grazing by domestic livestock. Prior to exclosure the watershed, as well as the rest of the Jornada basin, had been moderately to heavily grazed for the past 100 years. Concurrent with grazing, the vegetation had undergone a dramatic change from desert grassland, with an almost continuous cover of C4 perennial grasses, to isolated patches of the original grassland in a mosaic with desert shrub dominated plant communities (Buffington and Herbel, 1965). The exclosure lies along a northeast facing piedmont slope at the base of a steep isolated mountain peak, and covers a variety of component landforms from the foot of the mountain to the basin floor. This provided the opportunity to investigate the response of vegetation with respect to landscape characteristics as well as release from grazing. This summary data set consists of percent canopy cover of all perennial plant species from the plant line intercept measurements on either side of the LTER-I exclosure East and West boundary fence. Sampling occurs approximately every five years; it was last conducted in November 2015 and will take place again in 2020.
Surface soil analyses from a range of mesquite sites at Jornada Basin LTER, 1986
This data package contains data from a series of analyses of surface soils in mesquite habitats during the early years of Jornada Basin LTER (LTER-I and II). The objective of the study was to determine whether there have been changes in the structure and function of the surface (0-20cm) soil system, the zone most affected by litter decomposition, associated with the rapid movement of mesquite (Prosopsis glandulosa) from historical habitats (arroyo and playa fringe) into recent habitats (grassland and dunes). The mesquite soils were sampled at 4 habitats (playa, coppice dune, arroyo, and grassland) in October 1986, with subsamples analyzed and incubated in the laboratory thereafter. This data set contains analyses for gravimetric soil moisture, pH, phosphate, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, total phosphorus, NO3-N nitrogen mineralization, total inorganic nitrogen, NH4 nitrogen mineralization, organic carbon, inorganic carbon, total roots, tap roots, intermediate roots, and fine roots. This data set is complete.
Wetlands litter decomposition data for Green Lakes Valley, 1986 - 1994.
Long-term observations on decomposition of refractory willow leaves and twigs, Carex leaves, and filter paper began in 1986. Litter-bag experiments using pre-abscission willow leaves began in 1988.
Soil chemical and physical property data for Saddle nodal plots, 1986.
Samples were collected from various soil horizons during installation of tension soil solution samplers adjacent to nodal plots in the Saddle. Excavation was limited to minimize disturbance. Consequently, complete soil profile descriptions were not made. Samples were analyzed in the laboratory for various constituents.
Air temperature and solar radiation data for Green Lake 4 data logger (DP211), 1986 - 2006.
Climatological data were collected from an upper Green Lakes Valley climate station (Green Lake 4=D4) throughout the year using an Omnidata DP211 datapod. This instrument has a sample interval of 5 minutes and records averages of those 5-minute readings every 2 hours. Thus, daily totals represent totals of 288 values. Parameters measured were temperature and solar radiation.
Summary of the commercial and recreational striped bass fisheries conducted in Massachusetts from 1986 to present.
This dataset summarizes the commercial and recreational striped bass fisheries conducted in Massachusetts. Data sources used to characterize the state fisheries come from monitoring programs of the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (Marine Fisheries, the Division) and National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA Fisheries), which are considered to be essential elements of the long-term management approach described in Section 3 of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s (ASMFC) Fisheries Management Report No. 41 (Amendment #6 to the Interstate Fishery management Plan for Atlantic Striped Bass (IFMP)). Fisheries data are compiled from four Massachusetts regions (Cape Cod Canal, Southern Massachusetts, Cape Cod Bay, Northern Massachusetts). Data begins with year 1986 and is updated to present years as data is made available.

This data package was produced by researchers working on the Shortgrass Steppe Long Term Ecological Research (SGS-LTER) Project, administered at Colorado State University. Long-term datasets and background information (proposals, reports, photographs, etc.) on the SGS-LTER project are contained in a comprehensive project collection within the Digital Collections of Colorado (http://digitool.library.colostate.edu/R/?func=collections&collection_id=3429). The data table and associated metadata document, which is generated in Ecological Metadata Language, may be available through other repositories serving the ecological research community and represent components of the larger SGS-LTER project collection. The objective of this study is to collect baseline meteorological data for the CPER. Datasets auto12_climdb and man11_climdb have been processed for quality and missing values.
