Data from: Direct evidence of permeability evolution of Nanan granite after two cooling paths under different confining pressures: A comparative study

<p>Permeability decides the mass transfer behavior and plays a key role in the heat extraction of enhanced geothermal systems (EGSs), and the aim of the injection of cooling water is to enhance permeability within the geothermal reservoirs. Direct evidence of how cool water affecting permeability evolution is still limited. Therefore, we explored the permeability evolution of Nanan granite after air and water cooling under different confining pressures combined with optical microscopy and X-ray CT observation. We found that there are lots of microdefects observed in Nanan granite after two cooling paths, which dominantly drives the evolution of permeability from a microscopic scale. The permeabilities of granite under water-cooling condition are always larger than those under air-cooling condition, and water-cooling treatment further enhances the permeability of specimens. The permeabilities of granite specimens after two cooling paths decrease with confining stress. More microcracks and better connectivity among microcracks produce a larger permeability within the specimen after water cooling. The observed microcracks are regarded as the seepage channels and direct microscale evidence of permeability evolution of granite after two cooling paths. Our results may suggest that water injection is an efficient way for permeability enhancement due to thermal microcracks propagation in thermal simulation.</p>

Data from: Comparative LCA studies of simulated HMF-biorefineries from maize and miscanthus as an example of first- and second-generation biomass as a tool for process development

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a versatile platform chemical for a fossil free, bio-based chemical industry. HMF can be produced by using fructose as a feedstock. Using edible, first-generation biomass to produce chemicals has been questioned in terms of potential competition with food supply. Second-generation biomass like miscanthus could be an alternative. However, there is a lack of information if second-generation lignocellulosic biomass is a more sustainable feedstock to produce HMF. Therefore, a life cycle assessment was performed in this study to determine the environmental impacts of HMF production from miscanthus and to compare it with HMF from high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). HFCS from either Hungary or Baden-Württemberg (Germany) was considered. Compared to the HFCS biorefineries the miscanthus concept is producing less emissions in all impact categories studied, except land occupation. Overall, the production and usage of second-generation biomass could be especially beneficial in areas where the use of N-fertilizers is restricted. Besides, conclusions for the further development of the on-farm-biorefinery concept were elaborated. For this purpose, process simulations from a previous study were used. Results of the previous study in terms of TEA and the current LCA study in terms of environmental sustainability indicate that the lignin depolymerization unit in the miscanthus biorefinery has to be improved. The scenario without lignin depolymerization performs better in all impact categories. The authors recommend to not further convert the lignin to products like phenol and other aromatic compounds. The results of the contribution analyses show that the major impact in the HMF production is caused by the auxiliary materials in the separation units and the required heat. Further technical development should focus on efficient heat as well as solvent use and solvent recovery. At this point further optimizations will lead to reduced emissions and costs at the same time. The presented data set is the used inventory to model the environmental impacts. </span></p>

How important is budding speciation for comparative studies?

<p><span><span>The acknowledgment of evolutionary dependence among species has fundamentally changed how we ask biological questions. Phylogenetic models became the standard approach for studies with three or more lineages, in particular those using extant species. Most phylogenetic comparative methods (PCMs) translate relatedness into covariance, meaning that evolutionary changes before lineages split should be interpreted together whereas after the split lineages are expected to change independently. This clever realization has shaped decades of research. Here we discuss one element of the comparative method often ignored or assumed as unimportant: if nodes of a phylogeny represent the dissolution of the ancestral lineage into two new ones or if the ancestral lineage can survive speciation events (i.e., budding). Budding speciation is often reported in paleontological studies, due to the nature of the evidence for budding in the fossil record, but it is surprisingly absent in comparative methods. Here we show that many PCMs assume that divergence happens as a symmetric split, even if these methods don't explicitly mention this assumption. We discuss the properties of trait evolution models for continuous and discrete traits and their adequacy under a scenario of budding speciation. We </span></span><span><span>discuss</span></span><span><span> the effects of budding speciation under a series of plausible evolutionary scenarios and show when and how these can influence our estimates. We also propose that long-lived lineages that have survived through a series of budding speciation events and given birth to multiple new lineages can produce evolutionary patterns that challenge our intuition about the most parsimonious history of trait changes in a clade. We hope our discussion can help bridge comparative approaches in paleontology and neontology as well as foster awareness about the assumptions we make when we use phylogenetic trees.</span></span></p>
