Data from: Do urology journals enforce trial registration? A cross-sectional study of published trials
OBJECTIVES: Trial registration can increase scientific transparency, but its implementation in specialty fields such as urology is unclear. We aimed to assess the endorsement of trial registration in the author instructions of urology-related journals and to assess whether randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in the field were effectively registered. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study of published trials. SETTING: We first assessed the author instructions of urology-related journals indexed in 'Journal Citation Reports 2009' (12/2010). Second, we divided the results into two groups of five journals each, all with high impact factors either requiring or not mentioning trial registration as a precondition for publication. We then performed a MEDLINE search to identify RCTs published in these 10 journals in 2009 (01/2011) and searched the clinical trials meta-search interface of the World Health Organization (ICTRP) for RCTs without information about registration (01–03/2011). Two authors independently assessed information regarding editorial advice about trial registration and identified the RCTs. RESULTS: Of 55 journals included, 26 (47.3%) contained some editorial advice about trial registration. Journals with high impact factors were more likely to mention trial registration directly (p=0.015). Of 106 RCTs published in 2009, 63 were registered (59.4%) with a tendency to an increase after 2005 (83.3%, p=0.035). 71.4% (30/42) of the RCTs that were published in journals mentioning and requiring registration, and 51.6% (33/64) of the RCTs that were published in journals that did not mention trial registration directly were registered. This difference was statistically significant (p=0.04). CONCLUSION: A statement of trial registration in author instructions resulted in a higher proportion of registered RCTs. Journals with high impact factors were more likely to mention trial registration. We suggest, though, that ensuring trial registration is not the responsibility only of the editors. Medical scientists should realize that trial registration is necessary to contribute to transparency in research.
Moderate-severe OSA screening based on support vector machine of the Chinese population facio-cervical measurements dataset: A cross-sectional study

Objectives Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has received much attention as a risk factor for perioperative complications and 68.5% of OSA patients remain undiagnosed before surgery. Facio-cervical characteristics may screen OSA for Asians due to smaller upper airways compared to Caucasians. Thus, our study aimed to explore a machine-learning model to screen moderate-severe OSA based on facio-cervical and anthropometric measurements.

Design A cross-sectional study.

Setting Data were collected from the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine affiliated Ruijin Hospital between February 2019 and August 2020.

Participants A total of 481 Chinese participants were included in the study.

Primary and secondary outcome (1) Identification of moderate-severe OSA with apnea-hypopnea index (AHI)15 events·h−1. (2) Verification of the machine learning model.

Results The SABIHC2 model (Sex-Age-Body mass index-maximum Interincisal distance-ratio of Height to thyro-sternum distance-neck Circumference-waist Circumference) was set up. The SABIHC2 model could screen moderate-severe OSA with an area under the curve (AUC)=0.832, the sensitivity of 0.916, and specificity of 0.749, and performed better than the STOP-BANG questionnaire, which showed AUC=0.631, the sensitivity of 0.487, and specificity of 0.772. Especially for asymptomatic patients (ESS < 10), the SABIHC2 model demonstrated better predictive ability compared to the STOP-BANG questionnaire, with AUC (0.824 vs. 0.530), sensitivity (0.892 vs. 0.348), and specificity (0.755 vs. 0.809).

Conclusion The SABIHC2 machine learning model provides a simple and accurate assessment of moderate-severe OSA in the Chinese population, especially for those without significant daytime sleepiness.

Prevalence of oral manifestations in patients with lupus erythematosus in a sample of Egyptian population, a hospital based cross-sectional study

Background: Several systemic diseases manifest themselves in the oral cavity. Oral manifestations of lupus erythematosus (LE) are associated with a significantly increased risk of cancer. Dentists who are unaware of these lesions will possibly miss them. This cross-sectional study aimed to assess the prevalence of oral manifestations in patients with LE in a sample of the Egyptian population.

Methods: A descriptive study was performed on 189 patients attending the Internal Medicine Department, Rheumatology clinic in EL Qasr EL Ainy Hospital, Cairo University. Every patient was examined clinically after completing a questionnaire. Moreover, patients' medical records were also evaluated. The oral manifestations were recorded according to the WHO guide to physical examination of the oral cavity and classified according to their morphologic aspects and localization.

Results [DSL1] : Out of 198 patients, 182 females (96.3%) and 7 males (3.7%).

The prevalence of oral lesions in LE patients was 55.6%. The most affected site was the tongue 25.7%. The most common clinical aspect was patches, 53%. About 77.1% of the lesions were asymptomatic. 74.3% of the patients had oral candidiasis. The prevalence of skin lesions in LE patients was 37.6%. The most common finding was malar rash 79%.

Conclusions: The present study emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis of oral lesions to recognize patients with LE as the WHO considers oral manifestations of LE a widespread state associated with an increased risk of cancer. Also, implementation of oral hygiene measures and treatment to improve patients' nutritional state and health-related quality of life are recommended.

Attitudes of medical students towards the ethical and legal aspects of abortion: A cross-sectional study from Saudi Arabia

Abortion is defined as the termination of pregnancy which is a crucial issue to be addressed by multiple regulating systems such as health care providers and policy makers. The main aim of the study was to assess the attitudes of medical students in Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal University towards abortion in different circumstances. This is a descriptive cross-sectional study in which a 20-item online questionnaire was distributed through social media platforms to medical students. The results of the study showed that the majority of the students believe abortion should be determined by law, religion and spousal consent. The majority as well support abortion in cases of endangered mother's life, fetal life compromise and rape victims. However, they were against abortion in cases of financial incapacity of the parents and cases of unplanned pregnancy. The results of the study can be applied to improve medical education of abortion. More studies in this field of research are recommended for the purpose of providing more inclusive assessment of abortion attitudes in different medical education settings.

The impact of energy releasing B-vitamin intake on indices of obesity and cardiac function: a cross-sectional study

(1) Deficiencies in B7, B6, B9, and B12 lead to energy metabolism disruption, which induces the production of reactive oxygen species, inflammation, and lipogenesis.7 (2) Reduced levels of B1, B2, B3, and B6 levels are associated with increased risk of metabolic syndrome, which is considered one of the major cases of obesity.6 (3) Decreased levels of B1 and B2 are correlated with increased body mass index (BMI). (4) B6 regulates the expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARg) target genes, which play a key role in adipocyte gene expression and adipogenesis.40 (5) Decreased B1, B3 and B6 concentrations are significantly correlated with increased risk of insulin resistance, metabolic dysfunction and obesity.41 (6) B vitamins have a fundamental role in the lipid and lipoprotein metabolism cascade. Therefore, quantitative or qualitative defects in B vitamins will negatively impact the metabolism of lipid derivatives.35 (7) B2 plays a vital role in energy-expenditure adipocyte gene regulation at the epigenetic level.42 (8) Increased body weight leads to the reduction of vitamin B6 levels by inducing systemic oxidative stress, which leads to stimulation of adipocytokines dysregulation.

The impact of energy releasing B-vitamin intake on indices of obesity and cardiac function: a cross-sectional study

(1) B3 intake leads to decreased serum levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL), and triglycerides (TG). Also, increased levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL).20 (2) Vitamins B2, B6, B9, and B12 have a vital role in homocysteine demethylation into methionine, which leads to decreased risk of atherosclerosis. 14, 20 (3) Decreased levels of folate intake lead to decreased DNA-methylation, which has been detected in atherosclerotic lesions,43 also B6 is associated with reduced risk of metabolic syndrome.6 (4) Low levels of B1, B3, and B6 were associated with increased insulin resistance, metabolic dysfunction, and increased risk of atherosclerosis, obesity, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.11, 38
