LBA-ECO LC-15 Aerodynamic Roughness Maps of Vegetation Canopies, Amazon Basin: 2000
This data set provides physical roughness maps of vegetation canopies in the Amazon Basin. The images are estimates of aerodynamic roughness length (Z0) and zero plane displacement height (D0) at 1-km spatial resolution. The aerodynamic roughness length (Z0) is an important parameter to determine the vertical gradients of mean wind speed and the conditions for momentum transfer over a vegetated or bare rough surface.The maps were produced from a multivariate regression model algorithm developed from field-measured vegetation structure and remote-sensing data. The data input sources included Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) (Saatchi, 2013), JERS-1, MODIS, and field data from vegetation biomass plots over the Amazon basin, as well as tower-based wind profile measurements, and roughness parameters from LBA tower sites. There are two GeoTIFF (.tif) files with this data set.

Data from: Insect adhesion on rough surfaces: analysis of adhesive contact of smooth and hairy pads on transparent micro-structured substrates
Insect climbing footpads are able to adhere to rough surfaces, but the details of this capability are still unclear. To overcome experimental limitations of randomly rough, opaque surfaces, we fabricated transparent test substrates containing square arrays of 1.4 µm diameter pillars, with variable height (0.5 and 1.4 µm) and spacing (from 3 to 22 µm). Smooth pads of cockroaches (Nauphoeta cinerea) made partial contact (limited to the tops of the structures) for the two densest arrays of tall pillars, but full contact (touching the substrate in between pillars) for larger spacings. The transition from partial to full contact was accompanied by a sharp increase in shear forces. Tests on hairy pads of dock beetles (Gastrophysa viridula) showed that setae adhered between pillars for larger spacings, but pads were equally unable to make full contact on the densest arrays. The beetles' shear forces similarly decreased for denser arrays, but also for short pillars and with a more gradual transition. These observations can be explained by simple contact models derived for soft uniform materials (smooth pads) or thin flat plates (hairy-pad spatulae). Our results show that microstructured substrates are powerful tools to reveal adaptations of natural adhesives for rough surfaces.
Data from: Simple parameterization of aerodynamic roughness lengths and the turbulent heat fluxes at the top of midlatitude August‐one glacier, Qilian Mountains, China
The fluxes of sensible heat (H) and latent heat (LE), which are generally the important parts of the energy and mass balances over glacier surfaces, are widely quantified by the bulk method. However, due to the difficulty of determining the aerodynamic roughness length z0m in this method, H and LE values may still have large uncertainties with significant inaccuracy. To acquire reliable varying and intrinsic z0m values, new simpler parameterizations for z0m values at different ranges of the friction velocity u*b were fitted in this study. The method was implemented using the related meteorological data and glacial sublimation/condensation measured at the top of the August‐one glacier (4817 m a.s.l.) in the Qilian Mountains from 1 July 2016 to 15 August 2017. The parameterization shows that z0m increased sharply when u*b exceeded 0.43 m/s (the approximate threshold value) and that the effect of snowdrift was slight for the hourly z0m values in the range 0.15 ≤ u*b ≤ 0.43 m/s, which could thus be used to calculate the daily z0m. During the wet period (1 July to 24 September 2016 and 5 May to 15 August 2017), the turbulent fluxes calculated by the bulk method showed that net radiation Rnet was the primary source of surface energy (60.7 w/m2), whereas during the dry period (25 September 2016 to 4 May 2017), the main heat sink was the positive H (28.5 w/m2) rather than the negative Rnet (–10.0 w/m2).
Rough Castles 5 (July 2006)
Boulder in the Rough Castles area SW of Edlingham, Northumberland. This carved boulder is recorded as 'Rough Castles 5' on the Beckensall Archive (BA) and was added to ERA by NADRAP in 2008. Stan Beckensall records 2 cups on the upper surface whilst NADRAP add: "Two cups on top surface, possibly natural. Westernmost cup has sharp edges and easternmost is larger." Dataset for An Effective Water Depth Correction for Pressure-Based Wave Statistics on Rough Bathymetry
<p>This repositoy has the dataset for the scientific paper entitled "An Effective Water Depth Correction for Pressure-Based Wave Statistics on Rough Bathymetry", <a href="https://journals.ametsoc.org/view/journals/atot/41/11/JTECH-D-23-0118.1.xml" target="_blank" rel="noopener">published on Nov/2024 in the Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology (JTECH)</a>. This work compares surface wave measurements from co-located pressure sensors and wave buoys on a rocky shore off of the Monterey Peninsula, California, USA. Measurements at 8 locations are analyzed, and we found that errors in observations from pressure sensors are due to the rough seabed of the rocky shore. See the manuscript for additional details not covered here. The code for processing the data is archived in a separate GitHub repository (<a href="https://github.com/olavobm/Paper_EffectiveDepth/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Paper_EffectiveDepth</a>).</p> <p>This repository has 4 zipped folders with data that are relavant for the paper. All the data is saved in .mat files generated with MATLAB. For reproducibility, these 4 folders should be saved inside a directory called data, and saved alongside the content in the GitHub repository. The 4 folders with data are:</p> <ul> <li>bathymetry/ (~25 MB)</li> <li>level_1/ (~1.8 GB)</li> <li>level_2/ (~300 MB)</li> <li>level_3/ (~32 KB)</li> </ul> <p>The bathymetry folder has gridded bathymetry data in the study region, and ungridded bathymetry around instrument locations. The other folders have measurements from pressure sensors and wave buoys: level_1 has raw data (after basic quality control), level_2 has hourly wave statistics, and level_3 has results used in the paper. For reproducing figures in the paper, level_1 folder is not required.</p> <p> </p>

In each excel document, three directions of vibration, current and force sensor data is included. <br> Naming rules is as follows: In“ACF-1-2", "1-2"represents the second slot in first layler. <br> The corresponding cutting parameters for each slot are illustraed in "Ra.xlsx" document. </p>
Gitchie Manitou Shelter (Rough Draft Ruins)
At the Gitchie Manitou State Preserve in Lyon County, Iowa, stands the heavily vandalized ruins of a picnic shelter. The rugged Sioux Quartzite structure had a long flat sloping roof. The roof was supported on large timber beams. There was a large fireplace. Unfortunately, it came to be associated with a violent quadruple homicide from 1973. After that time, it was constantly vandalized and rumored to be a place of dark cult ceremonies. The surrounding park was considered to be haunted. Many visitors are unaware that the murders took place elsewhere in the park. Today the picnic shelter is extensively damaged and breaking down from both exposure to the elements and the destructive impulses of visitors. Rough Holden 03 (March 2012)
Another of the prehistoric carved rocks found on private farmland in the Rough Holden area of Rombalds Moor, West Yorkshire. First recorded in the database of Paul Bowers, this rock was added to ERA by the CSI:Rombalds Moor project as 'Rough Holden 03'. The team described: '...The visible area of stone has a longest axis of NNW-SSE, but the lower E half is currently turf covered. Motifs consist of two cups each with a groove leading out on the E side. The most northerly groove is 0.1m and southerly 0.18m. These grooves have been previously recorded as extending further to the edge of the stone, but turf coverage now prevents these being observed.' There's a possibility the carver(s) may have utilised the stones topography when placing motifs to create other elements of design. This decimated model was created from 14 stereo pairs captured by Richard Stroud (CSI Team) in March 2012. Wester Balgair - Quern Stone Rough-outs
A newly found panel that Alision Cunningham of Wester Balgair came across when walking back to her farm after visiting our site at Ballindalloch Muir. George Currie & I later uncovered the full panel, which is in an area where there has been extensive quarrying. around the top of the rockface there are four quern stone rough-outs. These are very similar to the ones seen at the Ballindallock muir quern stone quarry some 500m away. The querns are possibly Iron Age. The curved rockface beneath the querns is where millstones have been extracted, possibly in the 17th/18th centuries. This panel was recorded and 3D modelled by Nick Parish. Rough Holden 07 (March 2012)
Another of the prehistoric carvings found on private farmland in the Rough Holden area of Rombalds Moor, West Yorkshire. This stone was first noted by Michala Douglas and Paul Bennett in 2009. It was subsequently added to ERA by the CSI: Rombalds Moor project, who referenced the stone 'Rough Holden 07'. Both CSI and the original record on The Northern Antiquarian website describe the motifs as being clustered towards the northern edge of the stone. Both note a single cup and ring, a cluster of other cups and possible grooves. This model shows the features drawn in both archives.
