Diagramas da análise top-down de arquitetura da informação dos websites das bibliotecas das universidades públicas federais do sul do Brasil

<p><strong>Resumo: </strong>O objetivo deste trabalho &eacute; analisar as quest&otilde;es top-down de arquitetura da informa&ccedil;&atilde;o dos websites institucionais, propostas por Rosenfeld, Morville e Arango (2015), das bibliotecas universit&aacute;rias das 11 universidades p&uacute;blicas federais da regi&atilde;o sul do Brasil. Como resultados obtidos, destaca-se que, a maioria dos sites responde satisfatoriamente aos questionamentos, com destaque positivo para os sites da UFPR, UFRGS e da UFSC. Conclui-se que esta abordagem sistematiza a an&aacute;lise da arquitetura da informa&ccedil;&atilde;o e facilita o entendimento do observador, fornecendo subs&iacute;dios para melhoria da arquitetura da informa&ccedil;&atilde;o dessas interfaces humano-computador.</p> <p><strong>Palavras-chave:</strong> Arquitetura da Informa&ccedil;&atilde;o. Functional identity of dominant species in a predator community prevails over functional diversity in shaping the top-down control of herbivores

<ol> <li><span>Decline in species richness as well as changes in community evenness or functional diversity have been hypothesized to jointly affect ecosystem functioning. However, disentangling the relative effects of these changes in community structure is hard as these different aspects often covary with species richness in real-world ecosystems. In this study, we investigated the individual and interactive effects of functional diversity and community evenness of predators on the level of control of herbivorous prey. </span></li> <li><span>Using a highly-replicated mesocosm experiment, we crossed three levels of functional diversity of arthropod predators with two levels of community evenness while controlling for the effect of species richness. Using this experimental setting, we hypothesized that the effect size of functional diversity of predators depends on community evenness. We expected a positive effect of functional diversity of predators on top-down control at a high level of community evenness while we thought that species identity and their associated traits should drive most of the effect on top-down control at a low level of community evenness. </span></li> <li><span>Our results did not provide any evidence for an interaction between functional diversity and community evenness nor any beneficial effect of increased functional diversity overall on predation rates of herbivorous prey. In addition, our results revealed that species and functional identity drives most of the effects of predator community composition on top-down control of their prey in our study system. Assemblages composed of active hunters with low handling time and no starvation ability tended to have the highest impacts on prey biomass.</span></li> <li><span>By indicating that top-down control of herbivorous prey by arthropod predators is mainly driven by species and functional identity and not by functional diversity, our study provides insights into the consequences of ongoing species loss on ecosystem functioning. Future research should now explore the predictability of trophic interactions based on functional traits of predator and herbivorous prey to anticipate the consequences of changes in species composition on ecosystem functioning.</span></li> </ol>

Top-down vs. bottom-up: Grazing and upwelling regime alter patterns of primary productivity in a warm-temperate system

<p>Community structure is driven by biological interactions and physical processes that can vary across environmental gradients and spatial scales. Early ecological models focused on the role of resource availability (i.e. bottom-up effects), predicting that the strength of top-down control varied along gradients of primary productivity and that local species interactions determined community structure. However, the role of regional scale oceanographic processes in determining species interactions and community structure is now widely recognized, with bottom-up effects such as coastal upwelling driving regional scale patterns of resource availability. Such nutrient subsidies can significantly alter primary production and drive changes in algae-herbivore interactions in rocky intertidal habitats. However, despite the potential for upwelling to alter these interactions, studies investigating the effects of upwelling and grazing pressure are scarce, particularly for warm-temperate systems, and generally cover narrow geographical ranges. Using in-situ herbivore exclusion experiments replicated across multiple upwelling regimes, we investigated the effects of both grazing pressure and upwelling, as well as their interactions, on the sessile invertebrate community and primary production of macroalgal communities in a warm-temperate system. Invertebrate cover remained consistently low at upwelling sites and was reduced at non-upwelling sites when grazers were excluded. Macroalgal cover was greater at upwelling sites when grazers were excluded and there was a strong effect of succession throughout the experimental period. Grazing pressure was greater at upwelling sites, particularly during winter months. There was a non-significant trend towards greater grazing pressure on early than later successional stages. Our results show that the positive impacts of bottom-up effects of nutrient supply on algal production do not overwhelm top-down control in this warm-temperate system. We speculate that global increases in air and sea-surface temperatures in warm-temperate systems will promote top-down effects in upwelling regions by increasing herbivore metabolic and growth rates.</p>

Warming alters the top-down effect of a common mesopredator in an aquatic food web

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Global warming is altering the composition and functioning of both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Most research has focussed on direct effects of warming on species and their population dynamics, while less is known about indirect effects through species interactions. Trophic cascades are especially likely to influence the effects of warming given that trophic levels differ in their response to warming because of differences in metabolism and vital rates such as growth and reproduction. We investigated if the top-down effect of a common mesopredator, the threespine stickleback, alters the impact of warming on a Baltic Sea food web. We manipulated both temperature and the presence of stickleback in mesocosms, and found the stickleback to alter the impact of warming on lower trophic levels. This was through increased consumption of herbivores that exceeded the rate at which the herbivore population could grow under higher temperature, which in turn increased algae biomass compared to a scenario without stickleback, but not compared to conditions under normal temperature. Thus, the mesopredator increased the transfer of biomass to higher trophic levels of the food web when temperature was increased. This stresses the importance of considering the impact of warming on multiple trophic levels and their interactions. Failing to consider differences in responses among trophic levels and the impact this has on their interactions can result in faulty conclusions about the impact of warming on ecosystems.</span></p>

Data from: Numerical top-down effects on red deer (Cervus elaphus) are mainly shaped by humans rather than large carnivores across Europe

<p>Terrestrial ecosystems are shaped by interacting top-down and bottom-up processes, with the magnitude of top-down control by large carnivores largely depending on environmental productivity. While carnivore-induced numerical effects on ungulate prey populations have been demonstrated in large, relatively undisturbed ecosystems, whether large carnivores can play a similar role in more human-dominated systems is a clear knowledge gap. As humans influence both predator and prey in a variety of ways, the ecological impacts of large carnivores can be largely modified. We quantified the interactive effects of human activities and large carnivore presence on red deer (<em>Cervus elaphus</em>) population density and how their impacts interacted and varied with environmental productivity</p> <p>Data on red deer density were collected based on a literature survey encompassing 492 study sites across 28 European countries. Variation in density across study sites was analysed using a generalised additive model in which productivity, carnivore presence (grey wolf, European lynx, Brown bear), human activities (hunting, intensity of human land-use activity), site protection status and climatic variables served as predictors. </p> <p>The results showed that a reduction in deer density only occurred when wolf, lynx and bear co-occurred within the same site. In the absence of large carnivores, red deer density varied along a productivity gradient without a clear pattern. Although a linear relationship with productivity in the presence of all three large carnivore species was found, this was not statistically significant. Moreover, hunting by humans had a stronger effect than the presence of all large carnivores in reducing red deer density and red deer density increased with increasing intensity of human land-use, with stronger large carnivore effects (all three carnivore species present) at sites with low human land-use activities. </p> <p><em>Synthesis and applications</em>: This study provides evidence for the dominant role played by humans (i.e. hunting, land-use activities) relative to large carnivores in reducing red deer density across European human-dominated landscapes. These findings suggest that when we would like large carnivores to exert numeric effects, we should focus on minimizing human impacts to allow the ecological impacts of large carnivores on ecosystem functioning.</p>

This incredible house was captured in the Mission district of San Francisco, at the intersection of York St. and 25th. This entire neighborhood is filled with Murals left and right. Some on people's garage doors, some on the entire side of the building, and in this case, the entire house. This mural was done by a group called Precita Eyes Muralists, directed by Max Marttila and Fred Alvarado in collaboration with the Urban Youth Arts Program.
