Global Socio-Economic and Environmental data for PyPSA-Earth: An Open Optimisation Model of the Earth Energy System.
<p><strong>PyPSA-Earth </strong>is an open model dataset of the global power system at different network levels that cover our Earth. The African model can be built using the code provided at <a href="https://github.com/pypsa-meets-africa/pypsa-africa">https://github.com/pypsa-meets-africa/pypsa-africa</a>. Other regions follow soon under the same code base.</p> <p>Since the GitHub codebase is not suited for handling large changing files, we provide here separate <strong>data bundles and cutouts</strong> to be downloaded and extracted as noted in the <a href="https://pypsa-meets-africa.readthedocs.io/en/latest/index.html">documentation</a></p> <p>The below-provided<strong> data files </strong>contain various open data for improving energy system modelling decisions. Towards an animal economics spectrum for ecosystem research
<p>The framework of the plant economics spectrum advanced our understanding of plant ecology and proved as a unifying concept across plant taxonomy, growth forms and biomes. Similar approaches for animals mostly focus on linking life-history and metabolic theory, but not on their application in ecosystem research. To fill this gap, we propose the animal economics spectrum (AES) based on broadly available traits that describe organismal size, biological times and rates.</p> <p>To exemplify the feasibility and general usefulness of constructing the AES, we compiled data on adult and offspring body mass, life span, age at first reproduction, reproductive and metabolic rate of 98 terrestrial taxa from seven selected animal classes and mapped these taxa into an exemplary quantitative trait space.</p> <p>The AES consists of two principal axes related to reproductive strategies and the pace of life; both axes are linked by animal metabolism. The AES thus closely mirrors seminal ideas on fundamental life-history strategies and more recent discoveries and developments in the fields of life-history and metabolic theory. Furthermore, we find associations between the positions of animals within the AES and taxonomy, thermoregulation and body plan.</p> <p>The AES shows that key dimensions describing different ecological strategies of animals can be depicted with functional traits that are relatively easily accessible for a broad spectrum of animal taxa. We suggest future steps towards an application of the AES in ecosystem research aiming at the understanding of ecological processes and ecosystem functions. Additionally, we urge for databases that compile comparable functional traits for a large proportion of animals but also for further groups of organisms with the ultimate goal to map the economics spectrum of life.</p> <p>The framework of the AES will be relevant for understanding ecological processes across animal taxa at species, community and ecosystem level. We further discuss how it can facilitate predictions on how the functional composition and diversity of animal communities can be affected by global change.</p>

Interspecific differences in root foraging precision cannot be directly inferred from species' mycorrhizal status or fine root economics
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Nutrient acquisition in plants can be represented by a suite of intercorrelated root traits such as root diameter, nitrogen content, root tissue density, and specific root length. However, it is unclear how a plant's ability to precisely forage for nutrients in a heterogeneous soil environment (i.e., the precision of placing roots into nutrient-rich areas) relates to these traits. Mycorrhizal symbiosis also affects the relationship between the fine root traits and root foraging precision because fungal hyphae may be used for foraging instead of roots. Hypotheses matching high root foraging precision with low mycorrhizal colonization or "fast" acquisitive strategies of plants have been raised based either on data from tree species or a limited number of herbaceous species. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>To test these hypotheses, we compiled data quantifying the experimentally measured degree to which root biomass responded to patchy substrate nutrient concentrations (i.e., root foraging precision) for 123 herbaceous grassland species using a partial meta-analysis. We tested root foraging precision relationship with root traits involved in nutrient acquisition and mycorrhizal symbiosis (root diameter, specific root length, root tissue density, root tissue nitrogen content, and mycorrhizal colonization). The root foraging precision data came from four different pot experiments, and the trait data were extracted from publicly available trait databases. We used a phylogenetically informed approach in order to detect the degree of conservation of the relationships. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>We found that root foraging precision was not significantly correlated with other fine root traits and mycorrhizal colonization. Thus, it appears unrelated to the main dimensions of the nutrient acquisition space of herbaceous species, namely acquisitive-conservative strategy and outsourcing of acquisition to the fungi. Also, we found only a very weak phylogenetic signal in root foraging precision of 123 species. Our results suggest that root foraging precision constitutes another distinct, evolutionarily independent dimension in herbaceous species' trait space.</span></p>
Intraspecific variation in plant economic traits predicts trembling aspen resistance to a generalist insect herbivore
<p>Patterns of trait expression within some plant species have recently been shown to follow patterns described by the leaf economics spectrum paradigm. Resistance to herbivores is also expected to covary with leaf economics traits. We selected multiple mature <em>Populus tremuloides</em> genotypes from a common garden to assess whether aspen leaf economics patterns follow those observed among species globally. We also evaluated leaf economics strategies in the context of insect resistance by conducting bioassays to determine the effects of plant traits on preference and performance of <em>Lymantria dispar. </em>We found that: 1) intraspecific trait patterns of <em>P. tremuloides</em> parallel those exhibited by the interspecific leaf economics spectrum, 2) herbivores preferred leaves from genotypes with resource-acquisitive strategies, and 3) herbivores also performed best on genotypes<em> </em>with resource-acquisitive strategies. We conclude that a leaf economics spectrum that incorporates defense traits is a useful tool for explaining intraspecific patterns of variation in plant strategies, including resistance to herbivores.</p>
Data from: Variations in bark structural properties affect both water loss and carbon economics in neotropical savanna trees in the Cerrado region of Brazil
<p><span>Even after complete stomatal closure, plants lose water through the leaf cuticles and bark. This residual water conductance of leaves (g<sub>leaf-res</sub>) and stems (g<sub>bark</sub>) can negatively impact plant water balance and affect plant survival in seasonally dry environments. However, little is known about the costs and benefits associated with such water leaks, especially on stem level. </span></p> <p><span>Here, we characterized the structural and functional determinants of the variability in g<sub>bark</sub> across tropical savanna species to elucidate how variations in this trait are related to contrasting growth strategies. </span></p> <p><span>The high variability in g<sub>bark</sub> across species was associated with morphoantomical properties of the outer bark (thickness, density, and lenticel investment), and such characteristics influenced both stem transpiration and respiration, suggesting the existence of a trade-off between water conservation and oxygen permeability, which reflected contrasting growth and dehydration tolerance strategies</span><span>. For instance, species with higher g<sub>bark</sub> and g<sub>leaf-res</sub> presented a fast resource acquisition strategy but were more prone to drought-induced mortality by hydraulic failure. However, model simulations revealed that the relative contribution of g<sub>leaf-res</sub> and g<sub>bark</sub> to overall water balance depended on whether leaves were less or more resistant to cavitation than the stems. </span></p> <p><span>Synthesis. By combining correlative studies, experimental results, and a modeling exercise, we provide a new understanding of the costs and benefits associated with the variability in g<sub>bark</sub> across tropical savanna species, and a new perspective for studies of water relations and carbon economics in species from a hyperdiverse savanna. </span></p>
All Hands on Deck' or Separate Lifeboats? Public support for European Economic Solidarity during the Covid-19 pandemic
<p>What are the sources of public support for international aid in times of crises? This paper<br> investigates the determinants of public support for the EU Covid-19 aid package (’NextGenera-<br> tionEU’, NGEU), the largest aid package in EU history. We show that although public support<br> for within-EU redistribution is influenced by long-standing factors such as ideology and citizen<br> identities, endorsement or opposition cues taken from elite actors are important determinants<br> of public support for aid in times of crises. Conversely, the effects of policy details about the<br> aid package are more mixed. Using what is to the best of our knowledge the first EU-wide<br> study on public opinion on the Covid-19 rescue package, our vignette experiment shows that<br> short-term shifts in support for the rescue package are driven mostly by elite endorsement<br> cues rather than information about the precise terms of aid or amount. We also find that the<br> role of elite endorsement cues varies across different subsets of the population depending on<br> their level of political sophistication, national level attachment and country context. Thus, in<br> the face of multidimensional decision-making in times of crises, national institutions are key<br> catalyst of moving short-term support for policies of international solidarity. We discuss how<br> our findings have implications for democratic governance and accountability in the EU.</p>

Data set for: Leaf trait association in relation to herbivore defense, drought resistance, and economics in a tropical invasive plant
<p><strong><span>Premsie</span></strong><span>: </span><span>Exploring how functional traits vary and covary is important to understand plant responses to environmental change. However, we have limited understanding of the ways multiple functional traits vary and covary within invasive species.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Methods</span></strong><span>:</span> <span>We measured 12 leaf traits of an invasive plant <em>Chromolaena odorata</em>, associated with plant or leaf economics, herbivore defense, and drought resistance on 10 introduced populations from Asia and 12 native populations from America, selected across a broad range of climatic conditions, and grown in a common garden</span><span>.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Results</span></strong><span>: </span><span>Species'</span> <span>range and climatic conditions influenced leaf traits, but trait variation across climate space differed between the introduced and native ranges. Traits that confer defense against herbivores and drought resistance were associated with economic strategy, but the patterns differed by range. Plants from introduced populations that were at the fast-return end of the spectrum (high photosynthetic capacity) had high physical defense traits (high trichome density), whereas plants from native populations that were at the fast-return end of the spectrum had high drought escape traits (early leaf senescence and high percentage of withered shoots).</span></p> <p><strong> <span>Conclusions</span></strong><span>:</span> <span>Our results indicate that invasive plants can rapidly adapt to novel environmental conditions. <em>C. odorata</em> showed multiple different functional trait covariation patterns and clines in the native and introduced ranges. Our results emphasize that interaction between multiple traits or functions should be considered when investigating the adaptive evolution of invasive plants.</span></p>
Phenotypic plasticity and the leaf economics spectrum: plasticity is positively associated with specific leaf area
<p>Phenotypic plasticity is a key mechanism by which plants respond to changing or heterogeneous conditions. Efforts to predict phenotypic plasticity across plant species have mainly focused on environmental variability or abiotic conditions, i.e., site characteristics. However, the considerable variation in phenotypic plasticity within sites calls for alternative approaches. Different functional groups are thought to differ in their plasticity levels. Further, traits such as leaf specific area (SLA), leaf area (LA) and maximum photosynthetic rate (Amax) reflect central aspects of plant strategies. Lower values of SLA, LA and Amax are indicative of a resource-conservative strategy, which is thought to be associated with lower phenotypic plasticity. We used meta-analytical data to test whether plant functional group (herbs, woody deciduous and woody evergreens) and SLA, LA and Amax are associated with phenotypic plasticity in four trait types: biomass allocation, plant size, leaf morphology and physiology. We obtained data from 168 plant species and accounted for phylogenetic relationships in all analyses. We found a positive relationship between SLA and phenotypic plasticity in biomass allocation, leaf morphology and physiology, with differences across functional groups. In contrast, there was no evidence of greater plasticity in plant size in species with higher SLA; rather the opposite was true for woody evergreens. Amax and LA showed similar, but less consistent associations with phenotypic plasticity. Our results show the potential of building predictive frameworks for phenotypic plasticity based on easily measured plant functional characteristics. Results also provide insights into plant strategies and suggest the existence of potential compromises: resource-conservative, low-SLA species tend to be more stress-tolerant but may be less able to cope with variable conditions due to their generally lower phenotypic plasticity. Further studies are needed to explore the mechanisms and the potential implications of this association.</p>
Intraspecific variation and economics spectrum of Phragmites australis in lakeshore wetland of (semi-) arid regions
<p><em>Phragmites australis</em>, as a widely distributed species, has a high degree of intraspecific variation in functional traits and is able to respond to external climatic and environmental changes and adjust its adaptation strategies on time. The plant economic spectrum can reflect the adaptation strategies of resource acquisition and storage of plants in different climatic regions, and provide a scientific basis for understanding the ecological differentiation of plants in different habitats and their adaptation mechanisms. In this study, the morphological traits, nutrient contents and stoichiometric ratios of <em>P. australis</em> in lakes and lakeshore wetlands of semi-arid and arid climatic regions from east to west in Inner Mongolia Plateau were investigated to reveal the variability of plant functional traits at different regional scales and the influencing factors, and to reveal the ecological adaptation strategies of <em>P. australis</em> in different regions through plant economic spectrum. The results showed that soil moisture gradient, geographic location and regional scale effected the intraspecific variation of functional traits of <em>P. australis</em>. At the local scale, soil moisture gradients had opposite effects on the response to functional traits of <em>P. australis</em> in the arid and semi-arid regions. At the regional scale, climatic factors dominated the variation of reed functional traits across the latitudinal gradient, while the correlation with soil properties was not significant (<em>P</em> > 0.05). Plant economic spectrum theory is also applicable to the functional traits of various organs and whole plants of <em>P. australis</em> populations at different regional scales, and the acquisition and assimilation of resources is conservative in arid regions, while in semi-arid regions it is an acquisition strategy. This study provides a new understanding of the ecological niche differentiation and drivers of plant populations and ecological adaptation strategies of species at the regional scale, and provides a theoretical basis for the restoration and reconstruction of degraded wetland ecosystems.</p>
