Data from: Estimations of evapotranspiration in an age sequence of Eucalyptus plantations in subtropical China

Eucalyptus species are widely planted for reforestation in subtropical China. However, the effects of Eucalyptus plantations on the regional water use remain poorly understood. In an age sequence of 2-, 4- and 6-year-old Eucalyptus plantations, the tree water use and soil evaporation were examined by linking model estimations and field observations. Results showed that annual evapotranspiration of each age sequence Eucalyptus plantations was 876.7, 944.1 and 1000.7 mm, respectively, accounting for 49.81%, 53.64% and 56.86% of the annual rainfall. In addition, annual soil evaporations of 2-, 4- and 6-year-old were 318.6, 336.1, and 248.7 mm of the respective Eucalyptus plantations. Our results demonstrated that Eucalyptus plantations would potentially reduce water availability due to high evapotranspiration in subtropical regions. Sustainable management strategies should be implemented to reduce water consumption in Eucalyptus plantations in the context of future climate change scenarios such as drought and warming.

Data from: Differences in the soil microbial community and carbon use efficiency following development of Vochysia guatemalensis tree plantations in unproductive pastures in Costa Rica

This study shows that Vochysia guatemalensis tree plantations were associated with enhanced soil biotic and abiotic characteristics in previously cleared forests in the Northern Zone of Costa Rica, suggesting the possible use of this practice as a restoration strategy for local land owners. Soil samples from a primary forest (PF), secondary forest (SF), and a 13-year-old (OV) plantation of V. guatemalensis had greater relative abundances of DNA sequences of microbial genera critical for C-use efficiency (i.e., the saprobe, complex C and wood rot/lignin decomposer fungi, and bacterial lignin and other complex C degraders), and greater levels of total organic C, C-biomass, and Microbial Quotients as indicators of enhanced C-use efficiency, than found in soils of adjacent 5-year-old (NV) V. guatemalensis plantations and abandoned non-productive pasture/grasslands (GR). The major research conclusions were that: 1) conversion of forested land into abandoned pasture/grasslands decreased the C-use efficiency in the soils and the microbial groups associated with C-use efficiency; 2) soils in plantations of V. guatemalensis were associated with increased abundances of the DNA of these same microbial groups and enhanced C-use efficiency; 3) DNA-based taxonomic analysis of microbes and analysis of the Microbial Quotient values can be used to monitor soil ecosystems for assessment of the efficacy of restoration activities. Thus, planting V. guatemalensis on damaged lands in the Maquenque National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) should be encouraged to provide a sustainable forestry crop that can be harvested rotationally, while improving soil ecosystem health and reducing the pressure to harvest other forest sites.

Noise Intensity and Its Impact on The Perception and Concentration Level Among Forest Harvesting Workers in Industrial Forest Plantation, North Sumatera, Indonesia

<p>Abstract</p> <p><strong>Background:</strong> Noise has the potential to affect the comfort and health of workers. The objective of this research was to find out the effect of noise caused by timber harvesting process using chainsaw on the concentration of workers in an industrial forest plantation.</p> <p>Methods: This cross-sectional study included 20 respondents which consisted of 10 chainsaw operators/helpers and 10 non-chainsaw operators. All respondents were exposed to the sound of chainsaw in three different conditions (idle, half gas and racing conditions) with and without personal protective equipments (PPE). The sound intensity produced by the chainsaw and the noise received by the respondents were measured using sound level meter. Respondents&rsquo; perception toward noise was recorded using Likert scale. Respondents&rsquo; concentration level was assessed by giving 25 math-questions that must be answered within 10 minutes. Wilcoxon sign rank test was used to analysed paired data.</p> <p>Results: the average sound intensity received by respondents&rsquo; left and right ear were lower than the average of sound intensity produced by the chainsaw. The average sound intensity produced by the chainsaw in idle condition was 101.3 dB, while that received by the right ear was 81.36 dB and the left ear was 82.86 dB. When the chainsaw was in half gas condition,&nbsp; the average sound intensity produced was 111 dB while that received by the right ear was 95.83 dB and the left ear was 97.11 dB. In racing condition, the average sound intensity produced by the chainsaw was 124.7 dB while that received by the right ear was 106.2 dB and the left ear was 107.7 dB, respectively. The use of earmuff leads to better perception towards noise when compared with the use of earplug and the absent of any personal protective equipment (PPE). Wilcoxon test result showed that noise did not have significant impact on the concentration level of chainsaw operators, whilst the contratry result is true for non-chainsaw operators.</p> <p>Conclusion: The research indicated that although the noise produced by the chainsaw machine was considered as noisy for both chainsaw operators and non-chainsaw operator, it did not give significant effect on the concentration level of chainsaw operators and only affects the non-chainsaw operators. Therefore, given that the non-chainsaw operators were still affected by the noise, noise control measures are still needed to ensure occupational safety and health for the workers.</p> <p>Keywords: Chainsaw; forest harvesting; industrial forest plantation; noise</p>
