Data from: Health impact assessment of air pollution in Valladolid, Spain
Objective: to estimate the attributable and targeted avoidable deaths of outdoor air pollution by ambient PM10, PM2.5 and O3 according to specific WHO methodology. Design: health impact assessment. Setting:City of Valladolid, Spain (around 300.000 residents). Data sources: demographics; mortality; pollutant concentrations collected 1999-2008. Main outcome measures: attributable fractions (AFs); attributable and targeted avoidable deaths (ADs; TADs) per year for 1999 – 2008. Results: Higher TADs estimates (shown here) were obtained when assuming as "target" concentrations WHO Air Quality Guidelines instead of Directive 2008/50/EC. ADs are considered relative to pollutant background levels. All-causemortality associated to PM10 (all ages): 52 ADs (95% CI: 39-64); 31 TADs (95% CI: 24 – 39). All-causemortality associated to PM10 (<5 years): 0 ADs (95% CI: 0-1); 0 TADs (95% CI: 0 –1). All-causemortality associated to PM2.5 (> 30 years): 326 ADs (95% CI: 217-422); 231 TADs (95% CI: 153 - 301). Cardiopulmonary and lung cancer mortality associated to PM2.5 (>30 years): o Cardiopulmonary: 186 ADs (95% CI: 74-280) ; 94 TADs (95% CI: 36 – 148). o Lung cancer : 51 ADs (95% CI: 21-73); 27 TADs (95% CI: 10 – 41). All-cause, respiratory and cardiovascular mortality associated to O3(all ages): o All-cause: 52ADs (95% CI: 25-77) ; 31 TADs (95% CI: 15 – 45). o Respiratory : 5 ADs (95% CI : -2 – 13) ; 3 TADs (95%% CI : -1 – 8). o Cardiovascular: 30 ADs (95% CI: 8-51) ; 17 TADs (95% CI: 5 – 30). Negative estimates which should be read as zero were obtained when pollutant concentrations were below counterfactuals or assumed risk coefficients were below 1. Conclusions: Our estimates suggest a not negligible negative impact on mortality of outdoor air pollution. The implementation of WHO methodology provides critical information to distinguish an improvement range in air pollution control.

Uncertainty in health impact assessments of smoke from a wildfire event
<p>Manuscript abstract: Wildfires cause elevated air pollution that can be detrimental to human health. However, health impact assessments associated with emissions from wildfire events are subject to uncertainty arising from different sources. Here, we quantify and compare major uncertainties in mortality and morbidity outcomes of exposure to fine particulate matter (PM<sub>2.5</sub>) pollution estimated for a series of wildfires in the Southeastern U.S. We present an approach to compare uncertainty in estimated health impacts specifically due to two driving factors, wildfire-related smoke PM<sub>2.5 </sub>fields and variability in concentration-response parameters from epidemiologic studies of ambient and smoke PM<sub>2.5</sub>. This analysis focused on the 2016 Southeastern United States wildfires suggests that emissions from these wildfires had public health consequences in North Carolina. Using multiple methods based on publicly available monitor data and atmospheric models to represent wildfire-attributable PM<sub>2.5</sub>, we estimate impacts on several health outcomes and quantify associated uncertainty. Multiple concentration-response parameters derived from studies of ambient and wildfire-specific PM<sub>2.5</sub> are used to assess health-related uncertainty. Results show large variability and uncertainty in wildfire impact estimates, with comparable uncertainties due to the smoke pollution fields and health response parameters for some outcomes, but substantially larger health-related uncertainty for several outcomes. Consideration of these uncertainties can support efforts to improve estimates of wildfire impacts and inform fire-related decision-making.</p>
Dataset: Impact Events for Structural Health Monitoring of a Plastic Thin Plate
<p>This repository contains a novel time-series dataset for impact detection and localization on a plastic thin-plate, towards Structural Health Monitoring applications, using ceramic piezoelectric transducers (PZTs) connected to an Internet of Things (IoT) device. The dataset was collected from an experimental procedure of low-velocity, low-energy impact events that includes at least 3 repetitions for each unique experiment, while the input measurements come from 4 PZT sensors placed at the corners of the plate. For each repetition and sensor, 5000 values are stored with 100 KHz sampling rate. The system is excited with a steel ball, and the height from which it is released varies from 10 cm to 20 cm.</p> <p>To the best of our knowledge, we are the first, to publish a public dataset that contains PZT sensors measurements concerning low-velocity, low-energy impact events in a thin plastic plate. In addition, we also contribute with our methodology on data collection using an SHM IoT system with resource constraints (based on Arduino NANO 33 MCU), as opposed to the majority of the literature that uses Oscilloscopes for data acquisition. This concept of an MCU-based system for data collection in SHM is especially important nowadays, due to the fast rise of extreme-edge and embedded machine learning practices solutions that enable a variety of real-time data-driven SHM applications. Finally, we wish to highlight that by using this specific Microcontroller Unit (MCU) and sensors, the proposed implementation aims for an overall low-cost data collection solution.</p> <p>The dataset has been published as a dataset paper in 20th ACM Conference on Embedded Networked Sensor Systems (SenSys 2022), in the following workshop: The Fifth International Workshop on Data: Acquisition To Analysis (DATA '22).</p> <p>The dataset is also available at https://github.com/Smart-Objects/Impact-Events-Dataset.</p>

Data from: The impact of autotrophic versus heterotrophic nutritional pathways on colony health and wound recovery in corals
For animals that harbor photosynthetic symbionts within their tissues, such as corals, the different relative contributions of autotrophy versus heterotrophy to organismal energetic requirements have direct impacts on fitness. This is especially true for facultatively symbiotic corals, where the balance between host-caught and symbiont-produced energy can be altered substantially to meet the variable demands of a shifting environment. In this study, we utilized a temperate coral-algal system (the northern star coral, Astrangia poculata, and its photosynthetic endosymiont, Symbiodinium psygmophilum) to explore the impacts of nutritional sourcing on the host's health and ability to regenerate experimentally excised polyps. For fed and starved colonies, wound healing and total colony tissue cover were differentially impacted by heterotrophy versus autotrophy. There was an additive impact of positive nutritional and symbiotic states on a coral's ability to initiate healing, but a greater influence of symbiont state on the recovery of lost tissue at the lesion site and complete polyp regeneration. On the other hand, regardless of symbiont state, fed corals maintained a higher overall colony tissue cover, which also enabled more active host behavior (polyp extension) and endosymbiont behavior (photosynthetic ability of Symbiondinium). Overall, we determined that the impact of nutritional state and symbiotic state varied between biological functions, suggesting a diversity in energetic sourcing for each of these processes.
Health health impact assessment relevant output calculated from scenarios involving different levels of Near Term Climate Forcer mitigation
<p>This dataset contains output data from the health impact assessment using air pollutant concentrations from AerChemMIP model experiments in different Future Scenarios that involve the mitigation of Near-Term Climate Forcers, Climate and Land-use. The model experiments were conducted by UKESM1, a model contributing to CMIP6, and was run over the period 2015 to 2100 to investigate the effect of anthropogenic emissions on near-term climate forcers. The atmosphere only CMIP6 configuration of UKESM1 was used to run this set of experiments. Model simulations were conducted at a global resolution of 1.875° x 1.25°. These concentrations were then used to assess the impact of different mitigation pathways on the air pollution health burden. In addition, output is also provided from sensitivty scenarios that explore the impact that the total population count, age structure of the population and baseline mortality rates have on the calculated air pollution health burden.</p> <p>Outputs provided in the dataset include 10 year means of the global and regional total population count data, population weighted pollutant concentrations (both annual mean PM<sub>2.5</sub> and seasonal maximum ozone concentrations), total adult human health mortality (including the upper and lower 95% confidence intervals) in response to exposure to PM<sub>2.5</sub> and O<sub>3</sub> for different sensitivity scenarios.</p> <p>The second file (GEMM-5COD) represents the same set of calculations and data but using a different set of mortality outcomes (5 specific causes of disease) for PM2.5 exposure instead of non-accidential mortality (non-communicable disease) and all lower respiratory infections (GEMM NCD+LRI) in the original set of calculations.Further details can be found in the accompanying publication that uses the data.</p>
