Prospective UK undergraduate attitudes towards Theology and Religious Studies
<p>The survey instrument was designed by Paul Ashby and Jeremy Kidwell at the University of Birmingham, with input from Amy Daughton, Jagbir Jhutti-Johal, Carissa Sharp, Rachael Shillitoe, and Karen Wenell. Survey data was collected via online survey by TSR Insight delivered to members of the online platform "The Student Room" which was open from 21st June and 4th July 2021. The resulting dataset is a random sample of 933 complete survey results from UK students (aged 16-18) in years 11, 12 and 13.</p>

Validation of the UK'37 paleotemperature proxy in the South Brazilian Bight from core-top sediments
<p>Alkenone unsaturation index, water depth temperature, and nutrient concentration from the South Brazilian Bight (SBB). Temperature and nutrient content were retrieved from the World Ocean Atlas 2018. Residual analyses were performed using six paleoequations against observed temperature from WOA18. The PCA analysis was performed using alkenone unsaturation index, temperature, and nutrient data from each data point.</p>
UK climate hazard and climate change adaptation resources for heritage
<p><span>This dataset (.xlsx) is a compendium of climate change hazard data and adaptation resources for cultural heritage. It was created by JBA Consulting for Historic England and is accompanied by a <a href="https://historicengland.org.uk/research/results/reports/16-2024">research report</a> which provides the background, methodology, and results of the project. One aim of the project was to identify and compile climate hazard resources (data and tools) that could assist those managing the UK historic environment, with specific attention paid to data availability, spatial resolution, and format. </span></p> <p><span> </span><span>The project identified 73 datasets and 38 tools. The datasets were linked to relevant climate hazards from a standardised hazard vocabulary (<a href="../records/10868587">Thomas, 2024</a>). The attached pdf file provides further details on how to use the dataset. Four organic sea surface temperature proxies (UK'37, TEXH86, RI-OH' and LDI) in the westernmost Mediterranean for the last 35 kyr
<p>We present a high-resolution paleotemperature reconstruction from a marine sediment core (GP04PC) recovered in the westernmost Mediterranean, the Alboran Sea basin, over the last 35 kyr using for the first time in pararell four independent organic sea surface temperature (SST) proxies (U<sup>K'</sup><sub>37</sub>,<sup> </sup>TEX<sup>H</sup><sub>86</sub>,RI-OH' and LDI). We also present the δ<sup>18</sup>O of planktonic foraminifera <em>G. bulloides</em> record together with records of bulk parameters (total organic carbon content, δ<sup>13</sup>C<sub>org</sub>) and the accumulation rates of different biomarkers, providing insights in terrestrial input and primary productivity variations. </p> <p>We have also examined the Bayesian calibrations BAYSPLINE for U<sup>K'</sup><sub>37 </sub>and BAYSPAR for TEX<sub>86</sub>, although the non-Bayesian calibrations are used in this study.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p>

The dataset is chronologically split in training (20k, 1975--2002), development (8.5k, 2002--2008), test (8.5k, 2008--2018) subsets. Dataset for Report: "The Increasing Prominence of Prejudice and Social Justice Rhetoric in UK News Media"
<p>This data set contains frequency counts of target words in 16 million news and opinion articles from 10 popular news media outlets in the United Kingdom. The target words are listed in the associated report and are mostly words that denote prejudice or are often associated with social justice discourse. A few additional words not denoting prejudice are also available since they are used in the report for illustration purposes of the method.</p> <p>The textual content of news and opinion articles from the outlets is available in the outlet's online domains and/or public cache repositories such as Google cache (https://webcache.googleusercontent.com), The Internet Wayback Machine (https://archive.org/web/web.php), and Common Crawl (https://commoncrawl.org). We used derived word frequency counts from these sources. Textual content included in our analysis is circumscribed to articles headlines and main body of text of the articles and does not include other article elements such as figure captions.</p> <p>Targeted textual content was located in HTML raw data using outlet specific xpath expressions. Tokens were lowercased prior to estimating frequency counts. To prevent outlets with sparse text content for a year from distorting aggregate frequency counts, we only include outlet frequency counts from years for which there is at least 1 million words of article content from an outlet. This threshold was chosen to maximize inclusion in our analysis of outlets with sparse amounts of articles text per year. </p> <p>Yearly frequency usage of a target word in an outlet in any given year was estimated by dividing the total number of occurrences of the target word in all articles of a given year by the number of all words in all articles of that year. This method of estimating frequency accounts for variable volume of total article output over time.</p> <p>In a small percentage of articles, outlet specific XPath expressions might fail to properly capture the content of the article due to the heterogeneity of HTML elements and CSS styling combinations with which articles text content is arranged in outlets online domains. As a result, the total and target word counts metrics for a small subset of articles are not precise. In a random sample of articles and outlets, manual estimation of target words counts overlapped with the automatically derived counts for over 90% of the articles.</p> <p>Most of the incorrect frequency counts are often minor deviations from the actual counts such as for instance counting the word "Facebook" in an article footnote encouraging article readers to follow the journalist’s Facebook profile and that the XPath expression mistakenly included as the content of the article main text.To conclude, in a data analysis of over 16 million articles, we cannot manually check the correctness of frequency counts for every single article and hundred percent accuracy at capturing articles’ content is elusive due to the small number of difficult to detect boundary cases such as incorrect HTML markup syntax in online domains. Overall however, we are confident that our frequency metrics are representative of word prevalence in print news media content (see Figure 2 of main manuscript for supporting evidence of the temporal precision of the method).</p>

<p>This data set contains sequences of orthorectified images of the free surface of two rivers: </p> <ul> <li>River Sheaf, Sheffield, United Kingdom (Latitude: 53.373056° Longitude: -1.463913° (WGS 84)), recorded between January 2019 and February 2020;</li> <li>River Calder, Todmorden, United Kingdom (Latitude: 53.716198° Longitude: -2.097028°), recorded between 6 and 13 October 2020.</li> </ul> <p>The images are extracted from videos of the water surface also included in the data set. They are complemented by Matlab files containing the corresponding average space-time Fourier spectra. Huntable UK waterbird data
<p>Life history characteristics, harvest data, population trends and conservation statuses of huntable waterbirds in the UK.</p> <p>Wintering bird populations for the UK were obtained from the latest published estimates (Frost et al. 2019). The estimate for mallard was increased by 2.6 million birds to account for the annual release of captive-raised birds for shooting purposes (Madden 2021). We estimated a standard deviation for the population estimates by averaging the Wetland Bird Survey (WeBS; Frost et al. 2021) index for each species for the winters 2012/13 – 2016/17, which corresponded to the period used to estimate duck populations. We treated this mean index as equal to the estimate from Frost et al. (2019) and then calculated population estimates for each year based on their WeBS indices and calculated the standard deviation of these estimates. Population estimates for greylag goose, pink-footed goose, golden plover, snipe and woodcock were based on single years, but the same time frame was applied to standard deviation estimates in order to account for any interannual differences. The latest (2016) harvest estimates and 95% confidence intervals were taken from Aebischer (2019). Species specific body mass was taken from Robinson (2005). Where sex-specific body mass was reported we averaged male and female masses.</p>

<p><strong><em>Non-exhaustive record (~10,000) of locations of Shap granite (Sg) boulders and Shap microgranite (Sa) clasts. Search area was limited from: in the NE, the eastern margin of Gaythorn Plain; in the NW, Shap Pink Quarry; in the SE, Farleton Fell and; in the SW, the locale of Kendal (approximate coordinates of the study area: NE: 54.499850° -2.519770°; NW: 54.468401° -2.685596°; SE: 54.226849° -2.519770°; SW: 54.227170° -2.770000°)</em></strong></p> <p>The northern limit to the study area was selected to exclude the northern plume, which disrupted the earlier eastern plume over Crosby Ravensworth Fell. The western limit was selected to enclose the known western limit of the Mint plume. The eastern limit was selected to enclose the known eastern limit of the Lune plume. The southern limit was selected to enclose the broadening of the Mint plume in the vicinity of Kendal. </p> <p>A comprehensive field survey was made of lower Borrowdale and northwards. The western Sg plume down the Mint valley south to Kendal, and the area of Lune Gorge, south of Dillicar, were surveyed cursorily, mainly checking published locations and adding additional locations encountered during this exercise. Prior reports for the Mint valley show a well-defined narrow plume, so to reduce the workload, a more complete record of locations has yet to be compiled. Similarly, from prior reports, boulder locations are few in the region around Kendal and east to the southern portion of the Lune valley and the overall distribution, before clearances, was recorded adequately in the 19<sup>th</sup> C.</p>
