MarTREC Data Set for Report: Large Scale Evaluation of Erosion Resistance of Biocementation against Bridge Scour and Roadway Shoulder Erosion

<p>Data set used for the report, &quot;Large Scale Evaluation of Erosion Resistance of Biocementation against Bridge Scour and Roadway Shoulder Erosion&quot;.&nbsp;&nbsp;The purpose of the&nbsp;report was to develop an alternative approach for armoring the riverbed with biocementation through MICP to mitigate soil erosion. Long-term erosion exposed to outdoor environment, rainfall induced erosion, and accelerated erosion were conducted on MICP-treated samples to prove the feasibility of the MICP technique for potential applications in prevention of bridge scour and road shoulder erosion. The experimental work and discussion about the testing results indicated that exposing to outdoor environment could result in sharp decrease on UCS for MICP-treated samples. But the MICP-treated samples had better resistance to rainfall induced erosion. The bio-surface treatment gave significant help for cement-treated samples to resist accelerated erosion and water absorption, especially the multiple bio-surface treatments method, no erosion could be measured and 5% lower water absorption was achieved after the cement-treated sample was triple treated by bio-surface treatments. The pure MICP-treated samples were also good at resisting accelerated erosion and water absorption. Furthermore, fiber addition and multiple MICP treatments could improve their resistance. The maximum erosion rate of single MICP-treated samples reduced from 0.16 mm/min to 0 mm/min after triple MICP treatment cycles applied on the samples. Extra MICP treatments on soil samples improved the resistance to water absorption significantly. The triple MICP-treated samples achieved a 6% lower absorption than single-treated samples. All these results indicated that the bio-mediated particulate material based on MICP can provide an effective solution for problematic cases of sandy soil in prevention of bridge scour and road shoulder erosion.</p>

Data from: Quaternary land bridges have not been universal conduits of gene flow

<p>Quaternary climate oscillations are a well-known driver of animal diversification, but their effects are most well studied in areas where glaciations lead to habitat fragmentation. In large areas of the planet, however, glaciations have had the opposite effect, but here their impacts are much less well understood. This is especially true in Southeast Asia, where cyclical changes in land distribution have generated enormous land expansions during glacial periods. In this study, we selected a panel of five songbird species complexes covering a range of ecological specificities to investigate the effects Quaternary land bridges have had on the connectivity of Southeast Asian forest biota. Specifically, we combined morphological and bioacoustic analysis with an arsenal of population-genomic and modelling approaches applied to thousands of genome-wide DNA markers across a total of hundreds of individuals. Our analyses show that species dependent on forest understorey exhibit deep differentiation between Borneo and western Sundaland, with no evidence of gene flow during the land bridges accompanying the last 1-2 ice ages. In contrast, dispersive canopy species and habitat generalists have experienced more recent gene flow. Our results argue that there remains much cryptic species-level diversity to be discovered in Southeast Asia even in well-known animal groups such as birds, especially in non-dispersive forest understorey inhabitants. We also demonstrate that Quaternary land bridges have not been equally suitable conduits of gene flow for all species complexes, and that life history is a major factor in predicting relative population divergence time across Quaternary climate fluctuations.</p>

Possibility of bridge inspection through drive-by vehicles

<p class="midium"><span><span><span>Based on virtual simulations of vehicle-bridge interactions, the possibility of detecting stiffness reduction damages in bridges through vehicle responses has been tested in two dimensional (2D) and three dimensional (3D) settings. Short Time Fourier Transformation (STFT) has been used to process the acceleration data of vehicles. The energy band variation was found strongly related to damage parameters. More important, initial entering conditions of vehicles are critical in obtaining vehicle responses through the vehicle bridge interaction models. Through different levels of road profile roughness, the offset distance needed before executing the vehicle-bridge interaction (VBI) modeling is obtained.</span></span></span></p>

Data from: Phylotranscriptomics resolves interspecific relationships and indicates multiple historical out-of-North America dispersals through the Bering Land Bridge for the genus Picea (Pinaceae)

A robust phylogeny is prerequisite to understand the evolution and biogeography of organisms. However, ancient and recent evolutionary radiations occurred in many plant lineages, which pose great challenges for phylogenetic analysis, especially for conifers characterized by large effective population sizes and long generation times. Picea is an important component of the dark coniferous forests in the Northern Hemisphere. Previous studies improved our understanding of its evolutionary history, but its interspecific relationships and biogeographic history remain largely unresolved. In the present study, we reconstructed a well-resolved phylogeny of Picea by comparative transcriptomic analysis based on a complete species sampling. The phylogenetic analysis, together with molecular dating and ancestral area reconstruction, further supports the North American origin hypothesis for Picea, and indicates that this genus experienced multiple out-of-North America dispersals by the Bering Land Bridge. We also found that spruces in the Japanese Archipelago have multiple origins, and P. morrisonicola from the Taiwan Island has a close relationship with species from the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and adjacent regions. Our study provides the first complete phylogeny of Picea at the genomic level, which is important for future studies of this genus.

Bridging research integrity and global health epidemiology (BRIDGE) statement: guidelines for good epidemiological practice

<p>Research integrity and research fairness have gained considerable momentum in the past decade and have direct implications for global health epidemiology. Research integrity and research fairness principles should be equally nurtured to produce high quality impactful research &ndash; but bridging the two can lead to practical and ethical dilemmas. In order to provide practical guidance to researchers and epidemiologist, we set out to develop good epidemiological practice guidelines specifically for global health epidemiology, &nbsp;&nbsp;targeted at stakeholders involved in the commissioning, conduct, appraisal and publication of global health research.</p> <p>We developed preliminary guidelines based on targeted online searches on existing best practices for epidemiological studies and sought to align these with key elements of global health research and research fairness. We validated these guidelines through a Delphi consultation study, to reach a consensus among a wide representation of stakeholders.&nbsp;</p> <p>A total of 45 experts provided input on the first round of GEP e-Delphi consultation, and 40 in the second. Respondents covered a range of organisations (including for example academia, ministries, NGOs, research funders, technical agencies) involved in epidemiological studies from countries around the world.&nbsp;A selection of eight experts were invited for a face-to-face meeting. The final guidelines consists of a set of six standards and 42 accompanying criteria including study preparation, study protocol and ethical review, data collection, data management, analysis, reporting and dissemination.</p> <p>This database only includes anonymised responses of participants who agreed to their data being shared in this depository , i.e.19 out of the 45 (Round 1) and 40 (Round 2) participants.&nbsp;</p>

A digital mapping of the literature on vehicle-bridge-wind systems

<p>This dataset is the result of a systematic search and mapping of the literature relevant to the vehicle-bridge-wind system. The search phrase used to search the databases listed below can be found in tabulated form in one of the spreadsheets. The core component to this&nbsp;search phrase is that the title, abstract or keywords should include all three of the words vehicle, bridge and wind. The citation keys used in the spreadsheet can be mapped to the referenced texts through the .bib file.
