Recognizing the importance of near-home contact with nature for mental well-being based on the COVID-19 lockdown experience

<p>Several urban landscape planning solutions have been introduced around the world to find a balance between developing urban spaces, maintaining and restoring biodiversity, and enhancing quality of human life. Our global mini-review, combined with analysis of big data collected from Google Trends at global scale, reveals the importance of enjoying day-to-day contact with nature and engaging in such activities as nature observation and identification and gardening for the mental well-being of humans during the COVID-19 pandemic. Home-based activities, such as watching birds from one's window, identifying species of plants and animals, backyard gardening, and collecting information about nature for citizen science projects, were popular during the first lockdown in spring 2020, when people could not easily venture out of their homes. In our mini-review, we found 37 articles from 28 countries with a total sample of 114,466 people. These papers suggest that home-based engagement with nature was an entertaining and pleasant distraction that helped preserve mental well-being during a challenging time. According to Google Trends, interest in such activities increased during lockdown compared to the previous five years. Millions of people worldwide are chronically or temporarily confined to their homes and neighborhoods because of illness, childcare chores, or elderly care responsibility, which makes it difficult for them to travel far to visit such places as national parks, created through land sparing, where people go to enjoy nature and relieve stress. This article posits that for such people, living in an urban landscape designed to facilitate effortless contact with small natural areas is a more effective way to receive the mental health benefits of contact with nature than visiting a sprawling nature park on rare occasions.</p>

Native American use of cetaceans in pre-contact Oregon: Biomolecular and taphonomic analyses illuminate human-cetacean relationships: MALDI-TOF data

<p><span>This study characterizes how Native Americans living on the Oregon coast used whales and small cetaceans prior to European contact. We present an original analysis of a large subsample of archaeological cetacean remains from the Palmrose (35CLT47) site and new identifications from the previously analyzed Par-Tee (35CLT20) and Tahkenitch Landing (35DO130) sites. Using zooarchaeological and biomolecular analyses we report species presence and modification patterns to characterize use. Grays (<em>Eschrichtius</em> <em>robustus</em>) and humpbacks (<em>Megaptera</em> <em>novaeangliae</em>) were the most commonly identified whale species and a preferred source of food, oil, bone for tool manufacture, and possibly ligaments for sinew. Dolphins and porpoises, especially harbor porpoise (<em>Phocoena</em> <em>phocoena</em>), were a source of food and possibly bone for tool manufacture. While opportunistic hunting may have occurred, the presence of species such as blue (<em>Balaenoptera</em> <em>musculus</em>) and Cuvier's beaked (<em>Ziphius</em> <em>cavirostris</em>) whales suggest collection of beached animals was an important acquisition strategy. Our study demonstrates the value of biomolecular analyses for improved species identifications/understanding of species richness, and the value of zooarchaeological analysis to fully understand dietary and cultural contributions of cetaceans to precontact lifeways on the Oregon coast.</span></p>

Prediction of Individual Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) scores based on neural responses during live eye-to-eye contact

<p>Social difficulties are impactful in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and links between these difficulties and underlying neural processes are active research questions. We present a multivariate classification method for neural data acquired from 36 participants during a live eye-to-eye contact task. Participants were either typically developed (TD) or diagnosed as ASD through gold-standard Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) evaluation. We hypothesized multivariate classification could discriminate TD vs. ASD based on neural responses. Support vector machine (SVM) classification was able to discriminate between groups during the eye-contact interaction. In addition, it was found that underlying neural patterns contributing to binary classification also predicted measured ADOS scores with high correlation even though ADOS scores were not used for training. The correlation between observed and predicted ADOS scores was 0.72 (p &lt; 0.002) for eye-to-eye contact. These findings suggest neural responses to live eye-to-eye contact are predictive of social symptomatology in ASD.</p>

Archaeology demonstrates sustainable Ancestral Coast Salish salmon stewardship over thousands of years pre-contact

<p><span>Salmon are an essential component of the ecosystem in Tsleil-Waututh Nation's traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory, centred on present-day Burrard Inlet, BC, Canada</span><span>, where Tsleil-Waututh people have been harvesting salmon, along with a wide variety of other fishes, for millennia. Tsleil-Waututh Nation is an ancestral Coast Salish community that has called the Inlet home since time immemorial. This research assesses the continuity and sustainability of the salmon fishery at təmtəmíxʷtən, an ancestral Tsleil-Waututh settlement in the Inlet, over thousands of years before European contact (1792 CE). We apply Zooarchaeology by Mass Spectrometry (ZooMS) analysis to 245 archaeological salmon vertebrae to identify the species that were harvested by the Tsleil-Waututh community that lived at təmtəmíxʷtən. The results demonstrate that Tsleil-Waututh communities consistently and preferentially fished for chum salmon (<em>Oncorhynchus</em> <em>keta</em>) over the period of almost 3,000 years. The consistent abundance indicates a sustainable chum salmon fishery over that time and a strong salmon-to-people relationship through generations. This research supports Tsleil-Waututh Nation's stewardship obligations under their ancestral legal principles to maintain conditions that uphold the Nation's way of life.</span></p>

Low-loss contacts on textured substrates for inverted perovskite solar cells

<p>Inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) promise enhanced operating stability compared to their normal-structure counterparts. To improve efficiency further, it is crucial to combine effective light management with low interfacial losses. Here we develop a conformal self-assembled monolayer as the hole-selective contact on light-managing textured substrates. Molecular dynamics simulations indicate cluster formation during phosphonic acid adsorption leads to incomplete SAM coverage. We devise a co-adsorbent strategy that disassembles high-order clusters, thus homogenizing the distribution of phosphonic acid molecules, thereby minimizing interfacial recombination and improving electronic structures. We report a lab-measured power-conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.3% and a certified quasi-steady-state PCE of 24.8% for inverted PSCs, with a photocurrent approaching 95% of the Shockley-Queisser maximum. An encapsulated device having a PCE of 24.6% at room temperature retains 95% of its peak performance when stressed at 65&deg;C and 50% relative humidity following &gt; 1000 hours of maximum power point tracking under 1-sun illumination.&nbsp;</p>
