Data for: Cover crop functional types differentially alter the content and composition of soil organic carbon in particulate and mineral-associated fractions
<p>Cover crops (CCs) can increase soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration by providing additional OC residues, recruiting beneficial soil microbiota, and improving soil aggregation and structure. The various CC species that belong to distinct plant functional types (PFTs) may differentially impact SOC formation and stabilization. Biogeochemical theory suggests that selection of PFTs with distinct litter quality (C:N ratio) should influence the pathways and magnitude of SOC sequestration. Yet, we lack knowledge on the effect of CCs from different PFTs on the quantity and composition of physiochemical pools of SOC. We sampled soils under monocultures of three CC PFTs (legume [crimson clover]; grass [triticale]; and brassica [canola]) and a mixture of these three species, from a long-term CC experiment in Pennsylvania, USA. We measured C content in bulk soil and C content and composition in contrasting physical fractions: particulate organic matter, POM; and mineral-associated organic matter, MAOM. The bulk SOC content was higher in all CC treatments compared to the fallow. Compared to the legume, monocultures of grass and brassica with lower litter quality (wider C:N) had higher proportion of plant-derived C in POM, indicating selective preservation of complex structural plant compounds. In contrast, soils under legumes had greater accumulation of microbial-derived C in MAOM. Our results for the first time, revealed that the mixture contributed to a higher concentration of plant-derived compounds in POM relative to the legume, and a greater accumulation of microbial-derived C in MAOM compared to monocultures of grass and brassica. Mixtures with all three PFTs can thus increase the short- and long-term SOC persistence balancing the contrasting effects on the chemistries in POM and MAOM imposed by monoculture CC PFTs. Thus, despite different cumulative C inputs in CC treatments from different PFTs, the total SOC stocks did not vary between CC PFTs, rather PFTs impacted whether C accumulated in POM or MAOM fractions. This highlights that CCs of different PFTs may shift the dominant SOC formation pathways (POM vs. MAOM), subsequently impacting short- and long-term SOC stabilization and stocks. Our work provides a strong applied field test of biogeochemical theory linking litter quality to pathways of C accrual in soil.</p>

Data for: Social assessment of miscanthus cultivation in Croatia: Assessing farmers' preferences and willingness to cultivate the crop
<p>Social aspects of miscanthus cultivation have been investigated in a limited way in the scientific literature. Adopting existing frameworks for Social Life-Cycle Assessment enables assessments to include numerous social aspects; however, the relevance of these aspects depends on the local context. This study aims to identify the most relevant social aspects from the farmers' perspective using a previously proposed framework for the assessment of the stakeholder 'farmer'. It is based on a case study of miscanthus production in Sisak Moslavina in Croatia. The existence of abandoned lands in Croatia presents an opportunity for the cultivation of miscanthus as a potential source of biomass for the production of bio-based materials and fuels. The study seeks to assess the feasibility of cultivating miscanthus in the region, taking into account potential challenges and opportunities, as well as the farmers' willingness to adopt the crop, and to understand the reasons behind land abandonment. We conducted a survey among 44 farmers in the region and used a scoring method to identify the most relevant social aspects. The aspects most valued by the farmers were: health and safety, access to water, land consolidation and rights, income and local employment, and food security. Responses to the question of whether they would adopt the crop highlight the importance of an established market, good trading conditions and profitability of cultivation. The survey also enabled an understanding of farmers' preferences with respect to the production conditions of crops. The farmers regarded the provision of subsidies as one of the main factors that render a crop attractive. Opportunities for the adoption of miscanthus cultivation include high yields and low input requirements. Barriers include land conflicts and land availability. Despite the opportunities for miscanthus development in the region, there are important challenges to consider for successful implementation of the crop.</p>
Fitness and cold tolerance of Spodoptera frugiperda fed on corn and two winter crops(Original data)
<p>Fall armyworm (FAW) <em>Spodoptera frugiperda</em> is a major migratory and polyphagous pest. Overwintering, migrating and colonizing characters of FAW are closely related to vegetation and host adaptation. In this study, oviposition preference, feeding preference, fitness and cold tolerance of FAW fed on spring & summer crop (corn) and two winter crops (cabbage, <em>Brassica campestris </em>and rape,<em> B. napus</em>). We observed that FAW could complete their life cycle by feeding cabbage and rape, although fitness was not as good as corn. FAW fed on cabbage had higher survival, pupal weight, and host suitability index than rape while larvae preferred to feed on rape leaves and females preferred to lay eggs on rape plants. In addition, FAW larvae fed on cabbage had the shortest recovery time from chill coma compared to corn and rape, indicating that cold tolerance of FAW larvae was improved by feeding on cabbage. Consequently, cabbage could be an ideal host for FAW which needed to survive and reproduction in winter. These results improve our understanding of host selection and adaption of FAW, as well as lay a foundation for the prediction of FAW overwintering.</p>

Data from: 28 years of vegetation standing crop data from the Mississippi river delta
<p>Deltaic landscapes go through cycles of birth, growth, decline, to death governed by intertwined geological, biological, and ecological processes. This study tracks deltaic lobes in the Balize Mississippi River Delta, Louisiana, USA over ~3 decades (study years 1984–2012). Hydrologic and geomorphic patterns and those which sustain patterns to wetland plant richness, diversity, and biomass are described. Plant diversity and biomass were modeled by nMDS ordination. Taxa (53) were harvested and dried (116,706g) from 965 (0.25 m<sup>2</sup>) plots and divided into three groups: I. 4 Foundation Species; 78.9% of total harvest; II. 9 Pioneer Species; 13.6% of total harvest; III. All Other taxa; 7.5% of total harvest (8 Miscellaneous Grasses, 8 Miscellaneous Sedges, 24 Miscellaneous Herbs). Autogenic/allogenic processes (sedimentation, subsidence, plant colonization, succession events) affect composition and biomass. Eleven important species were identified. Taxa's richness increased on mudflats during primary succession (15 to 25 taxa per site), then declined to fewer than 5 per site. Niche-space theory explained patterns to community change. There was similar total biomass/yr (~500 g/m<sup>2</sup>/yr) at study sites. Quantile regression analyses showed water quality and quantity of the Mississippi River influenced biomass especially spring-time waters. Stochastic events (storms, herbivory, salt-burn, flood-pulses) impacted biomass. Long-term studies like this are required in a future of climate unknowns.</p>
Surface water supply allocation, crop, and disadvantaged community data for the San Joaquin Valley, CA, 2016
<p>Societies globally are struggling to meet freshwater demands while agencies attempt to address water access inequities under a rapidly changing climate and growing population. An understanding of dynamic interactions between people and water, known as sociohydrology, regionally could provide approaches to addressing local water mismanagement and water access inequity. In semi-arid California, local water agencies, primarily agricultural irrigation districts, are at the intersection of rethinking approaches to balance freshwater demands. More than 150 years of complex water governance and management have defined San Joaquin Valley irrigation districts and the region's water access inequities and sociohydrologic instability.</p> <p>Data in this dataset supported analysis of water governance, specifically including surface water and groundwater dependence within and outside of irrigation districts. Additional data includes disadvantaged community designation, allowing for assessment of inequities between water users and the relationship to broader societal inequities.</p>
