Ocean Heat Content Anomalies in the North Atlantic based on mapping Argo data using local Gaussian processes defined over space
<p>Monthly Ocean Heat Content Anomalies (OHCA) in the top 2000 dbar of the ocean are calculated (during 2005-2022, in the North Atlantic, north of 20N) subtracting the time mean over the period 2005-2021 from the monthly time series of OHC. OHC fields are mapped using a locally stationary Gaussian process (defined over space) with data-driven decorrelation scales (Kuusela and Stein, 2018). A linear time trend was included in the estimate of the mean field (along with spatial terms and harmonics for the annual cycle). In this product, mapping is done in latitude and longitude with monthly subsets of data. Mapping is done separately for different vertical sections: 15-20 dbar, 15-300 dbar, 300-700 dbar, 700-1850 dbar, 1800-1850 dbar. The 15-20 dbar (1800-1850 dbar) section is used to estimate OHCA for 0-15 dbar (1850-2000 dbar), where observations are sparser. Different vertical sections are combined to estimate global OHCA for 0-2000 dbar. Regions of the ocean that are shallower than 300 m or are not sufficiently well sampled by the Argo array are not included. </p>

<p>This data publication includes raw ensemble forecast output (forecasts.zip), as well as summary score files (scores.zip) for process-based forecasts produced with the Forecasting Lake and Reservoir Ecosystems (FLARE) framework. In addition, it includes scores for climatology (climatology_scores.csv) and random walk (RW_scores.csv) null forecasts, formatted observational data of target variables (sunp-targets-insitu.csv), and meteorological driver files required for analysis to accompany the manuscript "Skill of process-based forecasts relative to multiple null models varies across time and depth for water temperature and dissolved oxygen". Forecasts were made of water temperature and dissolved oxygen at Lake Sunapee, NH in 2021 and 2022.</p>

Related data of CG lightning attachment process
<p>More and more optical records have exhibited that multiple upward leaders (MULs) occur frequently on a structure in the flash attachment process. An interesting issue is why a structure can continue to launch an upward leader (UL) after the first one appears. This phenomenon is analyzed in the present paper. Considering the influence of the leader behaviors on the ambient electric field, an improved 3-D fine-resolution lightning attachment model with MULs is established to simulate cloud-to-ground flash events with diverse leader spatial morphologies. The simulation results show that MULs may initiate almost simultaneously or with an obvious delay and the variation range of UL length is large. From this, the flash events of lightning terminating on a structure are divided into four scenarios and each scenario is analyzed. It can be found that the spatial location of the downward leader, the length and propagation direction of the first UL and the time interval from the inception of the first UL to final jump significantly affect the electric fields at top corners of structure and further affect the inception of the second UL. Based on qualitative analysis, four factors are proposed to explain why the above four scenarios happen.</p>

Data on the soybean infiltration process utilizing LF-NMR
<div> <div> <div> <p>This paper employs low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (LF-NMR) technology to meticulously analyze and explore the intricate soybean infiltration process. The methodology involves immersing soybeans in distilled water, with periodic implementation of Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill (CPMG) pulse sequence experiments conducted at intervals of 20 to 30 minutes to determine the relaxation time T<sub>2</sub>. Currently, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is conducted every 30 minutes. The analysis uncovers the existence of three distinct water phases during the soybean infiltration process: bound water denoted as T<sub>21</sub>, sub-bound water represented by T<sub>22,</sub> and free water indicated as T<sub>23</sub>. The evolution of these phases unfolds as follows: bound water T<sub>21</sub> displays a steady oscillation within the timeframe of 0 to 400 minutes; sub-bound water T<sub>22</sub> and free water T<sub>23</sub> exhibit a progressive pattern characterized by a rise-stable-rise trajectory. Upon scrutinizing the magnetic resonance images, it is discerned that the soybean infiltration commences at a gradual pace from the seed umbilicus. The employment of LF-NMR technology contributes significantly by affording an expeditious, non-destructive, and dynamic vantage point to observe the intricate motion of water migration during soybean infiltration. This dynamic insight into the movement of water elucidates the intricate mass transfer pathway within the soybean-water system, thus furnishing a robust scientific foundation for the optimization of processing techniques.</p> </div> </div> </div>

The magnetic recording stability of vortex state irregularly shaped natural iron oxides: raw data, processing and micromagnetic modelling results
<p>Magnetic minerals, especially those existing within the vortex domain state, serve as the primary natural archives of ancient magnetic fields. In this investigation, we introduce an innovative method to examine the magnetic stability of remanence-bearing minerals. This method involves integrating <strong>Synchrotron-based Ptychographic X-ray Computed Nano-tomography (PXCT)</strong> <strong>with micromagnetic modelling</strong>. PXCT, a tomographic technique, is a non-destructive resource, which enables its application to valuable (unique) samples. When applied to a microscopic sample of weakly magnetic carbonate rock, PXCT revealed numerous nanoscopic grains of magnetite/maghemite, each exhibiting diverse morphologies, alongside various non-magnetic minerals present in the rock matrix. Subsequently, micromagnetic models were employed to predict the properties of these grains and investigate the potential impacts of irregular morphologies.</p>
Processed data for the analysis of human mobility changes from COVID-19 lockdown on bird occupancy in North Carolina, USA
<p>The COVID-19 pandemic lockdown worldwide provided a unique research opportunity for ecologists to investigate the human-wildlife relationship under abrupt changes in human mobility, also known as Anthropause. Here we chose 15 common non-migratory bird species with different levels of synanthrope and we aimed to compare how human mobility changes could influence the occupancy of fully synanthropic species such as House Sparrow (<em>Passer domesticus</em>) versus casual to tangential synanthropic species such as White-breasted Nuthatch (<em>Sitta carolinensis</em>). We extracted data from the eBird citizen science project during three study periods in the spring and summer of 2020 when human mobility changed unevenly across different counties in North Carolina. We used the COVID-19 Community Mobility reports from Google to examine how community mobility changes towards workplaces, an indicator of overall human movements at the county level, could influence bird occupancy.</p>

Data from: A qualitative analysis of an Aβ-monomer model with inflammation processes for Alzheimer's disease
<p>We introduce and study a new model for the progression of Alzheimer's disease incorporating the interactions of Aβ-monomers, oligomers, microglial cells and interleukins with neurons through different mechanisms such as protein polymerization, inflammation processes and neural stress reactions. In order to understand the complete interactions between these elements, we study a spatially-homogeneous simplified model that allows to determine the effect of key parameters such as degradation rates in the asymptotic behavior of the system and the stability of equilibriums. We observe that inflammation appears to be a crucial factor in the initiation and progression of Alzheimer's disease through a phenomenon of hysteresis, which means that there exists a critical threshold of initial concentration of interleukins that determines if the disease persists or not in the long term. These results give perspectives on possible anti-inflammatory treatments that could be applied to mitigate the progression of Alzheimer's disease. We also present numerical simulations that allow to observe the effect of initial inflammation and concentration of monomers in our model.</p>
