Trait coordination in boreal mosses reveals a bryophyte economics spectrum

<p>1. The study of plant trait spectra and their association with trade-offs in resource use strategy has greatly advanced our understanding of vascular plant function, yet trait spectra remain poorly studied in bryophytes, particularly outside of the Sphagnum genus. Here, we measured 25 traits related to carbon, nutrient, and water conservation in 60 moss canopies (each dominated by one of 15 moss species) across diverse boreal forest habitats, and used bi-variate correlations and multi-variate analyses to assess trait coordination and trait spectra.</p> <p>2. We found substantial trait coordination along a main principal components axis driven by trade-offs in carbon, nutrient, and water conservation strategies. Along this trait spectrum, traits varied from resource-acquisitive at one end (e.g., high maximum photosynthetic capacity, high tissue nitrogen content, low water holding capacity) to resource-conservative at the other end, in line with resource economics theory.</p> <p>3. Traits related to carbon turnover (photosynthesis and respiration rates, litter decomposability) were positively related to nitrogen content and to desiccation rates, in line with global trait spectra in vascular plants. However, architectural traits of the moss shoots and of the moss canopy were generally unrelated to the main axis of trait variation and formed a secondary axis of trait variation, contrary to what is observed for vascular plants.</p> <p>4. Resource-conservative trait spectra dominated in moss canopies from open and wet habitats (i.e., mires), indicating that high irradiance and possibly high moisture fluctuation induce a resource-conservative trait strategy in mosses.</p> <p>5. Synthesis. Our work suggests that trait relationships that are well established for vascular plants can be extended for bryophytes as well. Bryophyte trait spectra can be powerful tools to improve our understanding of ecosystem processes in moss-dominated ecosystems, such as boreal or arctic environments, where bryophyte communities exert strong control on nutrient and carbon cycling.</p>

Supplementary data: Exploring Remanufacturing Conveniency: An Economic and Energetic Assessment for a Closed-Loop Supply Chain of a Mechanical Component

<p>The conveniency between remanufacturing a single mechanical product and its new production is a highly investigated topic across various disciplines, including supply chain management. To this end, a comparison was made among three different configurations of the supply chain network: the traditional network for new production, the network with remanufacturing and direct interaction between customer and manufacturer, and the network with remanufacturing and indirect interaction between customer and manufacturer through a distribution center. The evaluation of scenarios for the remanufacturing conveniency of remanufacturing was conducted from both an economic and energetic perspective, generating 10'000 cases using the Sobol quasi-random low-discrepancy sequence. Data, models, and outputs for an agent-based hydro-economic modeling study in an intensively irrigated region of the U.S. High Plains

<p>In this dataset, we include all the models developed for the study "An integrated modeling approach to simulate human-crop-groundwater interactions in intensively irrigated regions", which is published in Environmental Modelling &amp; Software (<a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.envsoft.2024.106120">https://doi.org/10.1016/j.envsoft.2024.106120</a>). Additionally, we provide all the data used in this study. Below, you will find a description of the contents of each file:</p> <ul> <li>abm_modflow.zip: This file includes the agent-based hydro-economic model (ABM-MODFLOW), including model inputs and outputs,&nbsp;Python post-processing scripts, and the Windows batch script for the integration process.</li> <li>modflow.zip: This file contains the standalone MODFLOW model files. Each folder includes files for individual simulation periods, starting with a steady-state model for the predevelopment period, followed by seven transient models.</li> <li>modflow_rs.zip: This file contains the MODFLOW-RS model files. Given that remote sensing data is provided for years from 1984 onwards, only models for the post-1980 simulation periods are included. The Global and National Energy Systems Techno-Economic (GNESTE) Database: Cost and performance data for electricity generation and storage technologies

<p>Here, we present a database which collates historical, current, and future cost and performance data and assumptions for the six most prominent electricity generation technologies; coal, gas, hydroelectric, nuclear, solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind power, which together accounted for over 92% of installed generation capacity in 2022. In addition, we provide the same data for utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS), regarded as critical to the integration of variable renewables such as wind and solar PV.</p> <p>The data are global in scope but with regional and national specificity, covers the years 2015 through to 2050, and span 5510 datapoints from 56 sources. The database enables modellers to select and justify model input data and provides a benchmark for comparing assumptions and projections to other sources across the literature to validate model inputs and outputs. It is designed to be easily updated with new sources of data, ensuring its utility, comprehensiveness, and broad applicability in future.</p>

Academic Research at UNTRM: Bibliometric Analysis in Economic and Administrative Sciences

<p><span>Bibliometric analysis is crucial to assess research trends in disciplines such as economics and administrative sciences. This study aims to detail trends and developments in these areas at the Universidad Nacional Toribio Rodr&iacute;guez de Mendoza de Amazonas (UNTRM), highlighting emerging themes and influential actors. A systematic bibliometric methodology was used to understand the scientific focus of the publications of the thesis students of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences of the UNTRM. Scopus documents were thoroughly reviewed, using specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. The research followed a qualitative descriptive approach with non-experimental and longitudinal design. A total of 379 faculty theses were analyzed through December 31, 2023, using keywords such as "bibliometric analysis," "economic sciences," "management," "digital transformation," "business sustainability," and "energy efficiency." The initial search identified 786 papers, which were refined for quality assurance. Bibliometric analysis was performed with VOSviewer and Bibliometrix R, facilitating the creation of scientific maps and exploration of citation patterns. Results showed that the most researched topics include digital transformation, sustainability, energy efficiency and business innovation. Influential authors and institutions within UNTRM were identified and major research trends were mapped, highlighting emerging areas and gaps in the current literature. These findings are significant for future research as they provide a basis for exploring new directions in economics and management sciences. This bibliometric analysis not only maps research streams and scholarly collaborations at UNTRM, but also promotes a deeper understanding of the dynamics in these key areas of study.</span></p>

Techno-economics of Geothermal Power in the Contiguous United States Under Baseload and Flexible Operations (Dataset)

<p>This dataset was created as part of a project that is undergoing journal peer-review. Here is the abstract:</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>As geothermal technology continues to gain momentum, it becomes increasingly essential for stakeholders to assess the economic feasibility of geothermal power projects when integrated into electricity markets. This study aimed to evaluate the techno-economic viability of identified and undiscovered hydrothermal systems across the contiguous United States. Multiple data and methods were developed and integrated to model the lifecycle techno-economics of geothermal projects at hourly resolution. Additionally, flexible operations through wellhead throttling were evaluated to estimate the potential improvement compared to business-as-usual power plant operations. A total of 3,632 and 17,789 MWe of identified and undiscovered hydrothermal resources, respectively, were found to be economically competitive. Multiple sites were profitable under a typical 70 USD/MWh power purchase agreement, with return on investment close to 400%. However, operating in the open power market yielded non-profitable projects across the majority of sites. Opting for flexible dispatch resulted in an improved economic performance. Particularly, the most profitable site had nearly 20\% relative improvement in return on investment upon switching from baseload to flexible dispatch.</p>

<p>This repository provides data and code to reproduce the results of the publication "L. Quante, S. N. Willner, C. Otto, and A. Levermann (2024). <a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/s41893-024-01430-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Global economic impact of weather variability on the rich and the poor, <em>Nature Sustainability</em></a>".</p> <p><strong>This repository contains:</strong></p> <p>- 01_forcing_marginal_effects: marginal effects data to be combined with climate model data to generate the impacts<br>- 02_impact_data - timeseries of production disruption, generated as described in the methods "Estimation of direct production losses", using the code in 03_impact_downscaling<br>- 04_acclimate_settings: example settings for acclimate runs using the impact files. An Economical Open-Source Lagrangian Drifter Design to Measure Deep Currents in Lakes

<p>An economical, open-source Lagrangian drifter designed to collect current data on lakes&lt;200km2 was evaluated against existing designs.&nbsp;The new design was tested in deep inland lakes in the Finger Lakes region of New York,&nbsp;USA and is effective at tracking deep currents. The ease and low-cost of fabrication and launch/recovery should facilitate use of this&nbsp;design by less-advantaged communities &amp; researchers.</p> <p>This project includes data and code for preparation of graphs and charts to illustrate Lagrangian drifter experiments in Seneca Lake and Keuka Lake, New York, USA.</p>

<p>Data set used for the report, &quot;Economic Impact of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway on the States It Serves&quot;.&nbsp;&nbsp;The purpose of the&nbsp;report was to examine the economic impact of the GIWW on the five states it serves: Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida.&nbsp;This project involved several research tasks. First, researchers estimated the economic impact of the GIWW by looking specifically at the impact of the commodities using the GIWW in the relevant coastal counties in each of these five states. Once this task was completed, researchers then estimated the impact of the GIWW on other modes, modeling the possible adverse impacts that would result if the GIWW were to become permanently unavailable and shippers would instead have to use the next economically feasible transportation mode. Researchers examined the cost of shifting additional traffic to other modes of transportation.</p>
