Characteristics of households that were interviewed in a study that investigated factors driving tree species in cocoa farms in Cote d'Ivoire
<p>1. Intensive cocoa production in Côte d'Ivoire, the World's leading cocoa producer, has grown at the expense of forest cover. To reverse this trend, the country has adopted a 'zero deforestation' agricultural policy and committed to rehabilitate its forest cover through the planting of high-value tree species in cocoa landscapes using a participatory approach. However, less is known on the factors influencing farmers' introduction of high-value tree species in cocoa landscapes.</p> <p>2. We tested the hypothesis that ten factors previously reported to influence agroforestry systems adoption predict the number and choice of tree species that farmers introduce in cocoa farms. We interviewed 683 households in the cocoa-producing zone of Côte d'Ivoire and counted tree species in their cocoa farms.</p> <p>3. On average two tree species were recorded per surveyed farm. Generalized Poisson regression models revealed that cocoa production area, experience in tree planting and expected benefits influence tree species introduction through planting or 'retention' when clearing land for cocoa establishment. Age of farmer also influenced (P = 0.017) farmers' tree species planting in cocoa farms. Few tree species were introduced in current intensive cocoa-production areas than in 'old cocoa-loop' and forested areas. The number of tree species introduced in cocoa farms increased with expected benefits and experience in tree planting. The number of planted tree species also increased with farmers' age. Tree species were mostly selected for provision of shade to cocoa, production of useful tree products (38%) and income from the sale of these products (7%). Fruit tree species were the most planted while timber tree species were mostly spared when clearing land for cocoa production.</p> <p>Synthesis and applications. Agroforestry is gaining momentum in Côte d'Ivoire, as public and private institutions including the World Agroforestry Centre are developing and deploying multi-strata cocoa-based agroforestry systems. The results of the present study can guide the design and implementation of biodiverse cocoa-based agroforestry in the cocoa-producing zones of the country</p>

Data from: Assessing changes in distribution of the endangered snow leopard Panthera uncia and its wild prey over 2 decades in the Indian Himalaya through interview-based occupancy surveys
Understanding species distributions, patterns of change and threats can form the basis for assessing the conservation status of elusive species that are difficult to survey. The snow leopard Panthera uncia is the top predator of the Central and South Asian mountains. Knowledge of the distribution and status of this elusive felid and its wild prey is limited. Using recall-based key-informant interviews we estimated site use by snow leopards and their primary wild prey, blue sheep Pseudois nayaur and Asiatic ibex Capra sibirica, across two time periods (past: 1985–1992; recent: 2008–2012) in the state of Himachal Pradesh, India. We also conducted a threat assessment for the recent period. Probability of site use was similar across the two time periods for snow leopards, blue sheep and ibex, whereas for wild prey (blue sheep and ibex combined) overall there was an 8% contraction. Although our surveys were conducted in areas within the presumed distribution range of the snow leopard, we found snow leopards were using only 75% of the area (14,616 km2). Blue sheep and ibex had distinct distribution ranges. Snow leopards and their wild prey were not restricted to protected areas, which encompassed only 17% of their distribution within the study area. Migratory livestock grazing was pervasive across ibex distribution range and was the most widespread and serious conservation threat. Depredation by free-ranging dogs, and illegal hunting and wildlife trade were the other severe threats. Our results underscore the importance of community-based, landscape-scale conservation approaches and caution against reliance on geophysical and opinion-based distribution maps that have been used to estimate national and global snow leopard ranges.
Behavioural Weight Loss Treatment Plus Motivational Interviewing versus Attention Control: A Randomized Controlled Trial
<p>Studies evaluating the benefit of adding motivational interviewing (MI) to behavioural weight loss programs (BWLPs) have yielded mixed findings. The aims of this randomized controlled trial were to: (1) assess the efficacy of adding MI to a BWLP on weight loss and adherence among 135 overweight and obese individuals (77.8% female; mean BMI = 33.6 kg/m<sup>2</sup>) enrolled in a 12-week BWLP, and (2) explore levels of importance, confidence, and readiness for change ratings. Participants, who were randomized to receive 2 MI sessions or 2 attention control sessions, were assessed at baseline, end of BWLP, and 6 months post-BWLP. Both groups decreased their weight from baseline to end of the BWLP; however, there was no weight change from baseline to 6 months post-BWLP in either group. We observed no group differences in importance, confidence, and readiness for change after each session. Participants may not have benefited from MI because they were already highly motivated to change. These findings suggest that pre-treatment assessment and treatment monitoring may help enhance MI+BWLP efficacy by guiding a stepped-care approach that identifies individuals for whom additional MI sessions are needed, and when. A focus on refining elements of treatment remains an important direction for effective obesity treatment.</p>

His research focuses on the relationships between theatre and visual art, and on the concept of genre in the visual arts. He is the author and editor of books and studies on Francois Boucher, Jean-Baptiste Greuze and Jacques-Louis David, and his current projects focus on innovation transfer across artistic communities in eighteenth-century France, and on the practice of History painting. He is currently one of a multi-disciplinary team responsible for a new digital critical edition of <a href="https://choixdechansons.cdhr.anu.edu.au/">Jean-Benjamin de Laborde’s 1773 <em>Choix de Chansons </em></a> . Interview Corpora for the Study of Multilingual Repertoires in South-South Migration Dynamics I: Haitians in Chapecó (SC, Brazil)
<p>Corpus of 19 multilingual interviews with Haitian migrants in Chapecó (Santa Catarina, Brazil), conducted in various languages: in order from the most to the least documented in the interviews, Portuguese, French, Spanish, and Haitian Creole. This corpus is part of broader research on the evolution of multilingual repertoires in South-South migration dynamics. The interviews were conducted in March 2023 by the author in collaboration with Leonie Ette (University of Augsburg) and the two coordinators of the research group <em>Atlas das Línguas em Contato na Fronteira</em>, Professors Cristiane Horst and Marcelo Krug (UFFS, Campus Chapecó).</p>
