Annual nutrient loading and yield to Plum Island Estuary, as measured at the Ipswich and Parker Dams

Nutrient concentrations for various forms of N, P, C, as well as suspended sediments, are determined from monthly grab samples taken at the Ipswich and Parker dams. These nutrient concentrations are then used in conjunction with USGS discharge data (recorded at gages in the Parker River at Byfield, MA and the Ipswich River at Ipswich, MA) to calculate annual nutrient loading to the Estuary, coming over each dam. Annual yield is also calculated for both dams.

Functional Trait Measurements of Macroalgal Communities in the Santa Barbara Channel

This dataset contains trait and elemental composition data for macroalgal samples collected across depth gradients at multiple sites in the Santa Barbara Channel, California. Each sample represents an individual specimen characterized by morphological measurements (e.g., blade thickness, stipe diameter, total height), biomass of anatomical parts (blade, stipe, holdfast, reproductive tissue), and anchoring strength. In addition, biochemical traits—including carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and hydrogen (H) content—were measured from tissue samples analyzed in the analytical laboratory. These data support a trait-based modeling approach to macroalgal community structure and distribution, contributing to our understanding of functional diversity and ecosystem dynamics in temperate marine systems. Accompanying metadata include collection site, date, time, depth, location coordinates, and substrate type, providing context for environmental variation across samples.

Point-Quarter Distance and Dimension Measurements to Calculate Shrub Density and Estimate Shrub ANPP in a Chihuahuan Desert Creosote Shrubland at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico

In an effort to better quantify NPP of Creosotebush in the Five-Points region, it was decided to test the Point-Quarter method against the standard 1-m2 quadrat method that has been in use since 1998. Transects were laid out across the 5 mammal trapping webs as well as across burned and unburned plots of the Mixed Shrub site (MS). Repeated measures of the same bushes are performed seasonally. Whole shrubs of various size classes are collected, sorted, and weighed to develop regressions for biomass. Purpose: Data was collected initially to determine density and dimensions of creosote bush in the Five points area on core rodent webs and on burned and unburned plots following the 2003 prescribed burn. It was decided to expand the project by continuing measurements through time to quantify the change in shrub size and with simultaneous harvest of shrubs to measure NPP.

AIRBORNE SPECTROMETER MEASUREMENTS FMOM BOREAL SNOW-COVERED LANDSCAPE

The dataset contains 10 meter resolution reflectance data from boreal snow-covered landscape. The purpose of the airborne measurements was to investigate the effect of forest canopy on optical remote sensing signals for snow-covered surfaces. The hyperspectral airborne data was acquired with an AisaDUAL imaging spectrometer on March 18 and on March 21, 2010 in Sodankylä, Finland. The image swath was 240 meters and flight lines were several kilometers long. The original spatial resolution of the data is 80 cm x 80 cm, but it was resampled to pixel size of 10 m x 10 m. All measurements were carried out in non-cloudy conditions (0/8 to 2/8 cloud cover). On 18 March, the tree canopy was snow-free and snow on the ground was several days old, while on 21 March, the tree canopy was snow-covered and snow on ground was fresh. The data contains mosaics of the flight lines for the bands 555 nm, 645 nm, 858.5 nm and 1640 nm for both days 18 March 2010 and 21 March 2010.

AIRBORNE SPECTROMETER MEASUREMENTS FROM BOREAL AND TUNDRA SITE DURING SPRING SNOW MELT

The dataset contains 10 meter resolution reflectance data from boreal and tundra sites during spring snow melt. The purpose of the airborne measurements was to investigate the effect of forest canopy and snow melting on optical remote sensing signals at the very end of melting period. The hyperspectral airborne data was acquired with an AisaDUAL imaging spectrometer on 5 May 2011 in Sodankylä and in Saariselkä, Finland. Saariselkä is a fell region and partly represents open tundra. The image swath was 240 meters and flight lines were several kilometers long. The original spatial resolution of the data is 80 cm x 80 cm, but it was resampled to pixel size of 10 m x 10 m. Snow depth was between 0 cm and 30 cm at the Sodankylä site and between 0 cm and 60 cm at the Saariselkä site implying that the spring melt was clearly more advanced in Sodankylä. Additionally, more snow-free pixels were found at Sodankylä than Saariselkä. During the measurements the sky was cloudless in Sodankylä (cloud cover 0/8) and cloudy (cloud cover 7/8) in Saariselkä. The data contains mosaics of the flight lines for the bands 555 nm, 645 nm, 858.5 nm and 1640 nm for both study sites.

Raw spectra measurements of scattered sunlight collected using a MAX-DOAS (Multi-Axis Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy) instrument in the austral summer of 2016/17 during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE).

Dataset abstract

To achieve the objectives of the project, we installed a MAX-DOAS (Multi-AXis Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy) instrument on the vessel “Akademik Tryoshnikov”. This instrument is based on the DOAS technique, which is used to measure trace gas concentrations in the atmosphere. The method consists of the analysis of the spectral absorption lines that each trace gas produces in the solar spectra. The DOAS technique uses the narrowband features that every trace gas has in their spectral absorption coefficients. This differential cross section is unique and acts like a fingerprint for the trace gases, allowing to differentiate between them and to estimate their concentrations (for further details see Platt and Stutz, 2008).

In the past decades, atmospheric chemists have come to realize that halogen species (like Cl, Br or I and their oxides ClO, BrO and IO) exert a powerful influence on the chemical composition of the troposphere and through that influence affect the evolution of pollutants, hence having a significant impact on climate. These reactive halogen species are potent oxidizers for organic and inorganic compounds throughout the troposphere. In particular, halogen cycles can act on several compounds (such as methane, ozone, particles…), all of which are climate forcing agents through direct and indirect radiative effects. Dynamic exchange of halogens between the ocean, sea ice, snowpack and atmosphere is the main driver for the frequent occurrence of Ozone Depletion Events (ODEs) and Atmospheric Mercury Depletion Events (AMDEs) (Saiz-Lopez and von Glasow, 2012).

In this dataset we present the raw spectra measurements of scattered sunlight recorded by the MAX-DOAS onboard a research vessel in the Southern Ocean and Atlantic Ocean.
