Data from: Different effects of fire age and fire recurrence on grass and woody plant chemistry in Kafue National Park, Zambia

In savannas, fire and herbivores are important drivers of natural ecosystem processes. Fire is also used intensively for management purposes. However, reported fire effects differ between studies. Reasons for these differences are still poorly understood. Here, we investigated the effects of fire on leaf chemistry of grasses and woody plants in the savanna of the Busanga Flood Plain, Zambia, in relation to the time elapsed between plant sampling and the last fire (fire age) and the frequency of fires during the last 16 years (fire recurrence). We analyzed leaves for their nitrogen, carbon and fiber concentrations, and estimated their metabolizable energy content, reflecting feed quality for browsers and grazers. Grasses and woody plants differed in all chemical components and showed different responses to fire. Grass quality was higher at sites burnt in the year of sample collection than at sites burnt only in previous years, but did not change under different fire recurrences. Leaves of woody plants did not differ in relation to fire age but their quality increased with increasing fire recurrence. In woody plants, the carbon content responded to the interaction between fire age and fire recurrence, indicating changes in carbon allocation in response to fire. Thus, burning increased feed quality for grazers and browsers but on different temporal scales. The scale effects may contribute to the differences in resource allocation described by different studies. They merit more attention in management decisions as well as in future studies on fire effects in savanna systems.

Network embedding for understanding the National Park System through the lenses of news media, scientific communication and biogeography

The United States national parks encompass a variety of biophysical and historical resources important for national cultural heritage. Yet how these resources are socially constructed often depends upon the beholder. Parks tend to be conceptualized according to their (fixed) geographic context, so our understanding of this system of systems is dominated by this geographic lens. To expose the systemic structure that exists beyond their geographic embedding, we analyze three representations of the national park system using park-park similarity networks according to their co-occurrence in: (a) ~423,000 news media articles; (b) ~11,000 research publications; and (c) ~60,000 species inhabiting parks. We quantify structural variation between network representations by leveraging similarity measures at different scales: park-level (park-park correlations) and system-level (network communities' consistency). Because parks are governed and experienced at multiple scales, cross-network comparison informs how management should account for the varying objectives and constraints that dominate at each scale. Our results identify an interesting paradox: whereas park-level correlations depend strongly on the representative lens, the network communities are remarkably robust and consistent with the underlying geographic embedding. Our data-driven methodology is generalizable to other geographically embedded socio-environmental systems and supports the holistic analysis of systems-level structure that may elude other approaches.

Prioritization – ZONATION of Šumava National Park

The final raster layer of prioritization created by using ZONATION software. It is a result of our analyses: we made habitat suitability models for fifty species and used a habitat mapping layer – a detailed description of natural habitats with its older and updated version of the layer.

These biodiversity features were inputs for ZONATION. The algorithm starts from the whole landscape and iteratively removes pixels of the raster of the lowest conservation value. We used ABF (additive benefit functions) algorithm, which emphasizes locations with many occurrences of different species and richness of the inputs.

The final file divides Šumava NP (our study area) into one hundred same pieces according to its conservation priority.

Lowry Pueblo National Historic Landmark
The Lowry Pueblo National Historic Landmark is located within Canyons of Ancients National Monument in the four corners region of the American Southwest. Containing the highest known density of archaeological sites in the United States, the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument holds evidence of cultures and traditions spanning thousands of years. Sites within the monument include cliff dwellings, single family dwellings, great kivas, multi-storey adobe structures, shrines, rock paintings, petroglyphs and towers. Today, twenty-four native tribes claim cultural affiliation with Canyons of the Ancient National Monument. The Lowry Pueblo National Historic Landmark is a Puebloan "Great House" that contains thirty-seven rooms, eight kivas, and one Great Kiva. Archaeologists have dated the construction and occupation of the site to 100 years in the 11th Century though there is evidence that people continued to use the site into the mid-1200s.
