Plant functional traits and corresponding satellite multispectral data for two sites in the Czech Republic
<p>This data set contains measurements of plant functional traits and corresponding satellite multispectral data for two sites in the Czech Republic – Lanžhot and Štítná throughout multiple campaigns. Plant functional traits were collected from representative trees selected at both study sites. At the Lanžhot site, a total of 16 trees of the following species were sampled: Quercus robur (4 trees), Quercus cerris L. (2 trees), Carpinus betulus (4 trees), Fraxinus angustifolia (4 trees), Tilia cordata (2 trees). At Štítná, a total of 10 Fagus sylvatica trees were sampled. Field campaigns were timed to cover different phenological stages of deciduous tree leaf development, from fresh leaf emergence, through full leaf development at the peak of the growing season, to autumn leaf senescence. In total, six field campaigns at Lanžhot during 2019 and 2020 and five field campaigns at Štítná during 2020 and 2021 were conducted.</p>
Data from: Landscape variation in defense traits along gradients of multiple resources in a tropical savanna plant
<p><span>Many plant species are widely distributed and consequently are exposed to multiple abiotic factors and diverse herbivores, each of which may distinctly affect the magnitude of different defense traits.</span><span> </span><span>Alternative theories for optimal allocation to plant defense traits predict both positive and negative associations between magnitude of defense and resource availability. These predictions may apply even within species. </span><span>This </span><span>suggests potential for a single species' patterns of association of defense traits and resources to vary with both the type of defense and identity of resource, but relatively few studies have explored intraspecific variation in multiple defense traits along several resource gradients simultaneously. </span><span>In order to address this gap, especially in an ecosystem dominated by large mammalian herbivores, we assessed relationships between multiple resources (rainfall, soil N, and soil P) and plant defense traits (prickle density, phenolics, and lignin content) using a widely distributed tropical savanna herb, <em>Solanum</em> <em>incanum</em>, growing in naturally occurring resource gradients within the Serengeti National Park. </span>We found substantial intraspecific variation in all three defense traits across sites (n =43). Variation in prickle density was positively associated with rainfall and soil P, but not soil N. In contrast to prickle density, phenolics and lignin were uncorrelated with all three resource gradients. This independent association of soil P with a carbon-based defense, prickle density, suggests potential for resources that are not components of defenses to influence allocation to defense traits. Such influence may reflect association between resource and herbivore abundance and/or preference. These varied patterns in resource-defense associations further emphasize the tremendous variation in anti-herbivore traits which may be influenced by different plant resources and highlight the need to consider multiple resource gradients in understanding evolution of plant traits.</p>

Data for: Position in the plant size hierarchy is not heritable
<p><span>The rate of fitness evolution is largely determined by the amount of genetic variation for fitness in the population. In many plant populations, a few large individuals often occur alongside many more, smaller individuals. In annual plants, size is highly correlated with fitness. The contribution of genetic variation to position in the plant size hierarchy has not been investigated. We genotyped individuals at opposing positions in the plant size distribution in a natural population of the annual plant <em>Impatiens</em> <em>capensis</em> (Jewelweed). No significant genetic variation for position in the size hierarchy was detected when population structure was accounted for. This result suggests that the rate of evolution for increased plant fitness is constrained by low levels of standing genetic variation.</span></p>
Data from: Population divergence in heat and drought responses of a coastal plant: from metabolic phenotypes to plant morphology and growth
<p>This dataset supports the article "Population divergence in heat and drought responses of a coastal plant: from metabolic phenotypes to plant morphology and growth", which is under minor revision in Journal of Experimental Botany. The study addresses the combined effects of and plant population origin, drought and heat stress on plant growth, plant morphology and the leaf metabolome. The data were assessed in Northern and Southern European individuals of <em>Cakile maritma</em> (See Rocket). An R-script containing all statistical analyses that have been implemented with these data is also provided.</p>

<p>These datasets support the data provided directly in the scientific publication titled "Tomato Leaf Curl New Delhi Virus Spain Strain Is Not Transmitted by Trialeurodes vaporariorum and Is Inefficiently Transmitted by Bemisia tabaci Mediterranean between Zucchini and the Wild Cucurbit Ecballium elaterium", published in the <a href="https://www.mdpi.com/2075-4450/14/4/384">Insects journal</a>. </p> <p>The figure included in the datasets highlights agroinoculation experiments with tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus Spain strain using different source plant–target plant–whitefly species combinations. ToLCNDV (DNA-A and DNA-B) was detected by molecular hybridization after tissue printing on nylon membranes using specific digoxigenin-labelled DNA probes for each viral component. (<strong>A</strong>) Prints of zucchini plants inoculated using Trialeurodes vaporariorum (T. v.) or Bemisia tabaci MED (B. t.) as a vector and infected zucchini plants as the virus source. (<strong>B</strong>) Prints of Ecballium elaterium plants using B. t. as a vector and infected zucchini plants as the virus source. The Prairie State: Using Ecological Niche Modeling to Predict Distributions of Early Land Plants
<p>This data includes raw data of over 12,000 occurrences were downloaded from the<strong> Consortium of Bryophyte Herbaria (<a href="http://www.bryophyteportal.org/portal">www.bryophyteportal.org/portal</a>), </strong>that were listed to be in Illinois and included longitude and latitude data. This data set was screened and cleaned to investigate species distribution models as well as generate models of selected bryophytes investigating future changes in distribution across climate change scenarios.</p>

Effects of climate change on the distribution of plant species and plant functional strategies on the Canary Islands
<p>Occurrence data:</p> <p>We used occurrence data from the Banco de Datos de Biodiversidad de Canarias, an open-access database, for single-island endemic (SIE; n = 325), archipelago endemic (AE; n = 234) and definitely non-endemic native (NEN; n = 149) extant seed plant species (excluding subspecies), in a raster of 500 m x 500 m grid cells covering the Canary Islands (<a href="https://www.biodiversidadcanarias.es/biota/">https://www.biodiversidadcanarias.es/biota/</a>) [<em>accessed 14/03/2022</em>]. The database includes all species listed in the checklist of the Banco de Datos de Biodiversidad de Canarias, across 31,628 grid cell assemblages. Species range in occurrence from 1 to 4,466 cells. We only retrieved occurrences for which a species has been certainly observed or collected (precision level 1 of four levels). The Banco de Datos de Biodiversidad de Canarias provides presence-only information that is spatially biased by sampling effort (Hortal et al., 2007). However, the sampling bias of SIEs, AEs, and NENs is less than for species overall because studies incorporated into the database involved focus on, and extensive sampling of, endemic and non-endemic native species (<a href="https://www.biodiversidadcanarias.es/biota/documentos">https://www.biodiversidadcanarias.es/biota/documentos</a>). We considered a species (pseudo-)absent if it was not recorded at a site, although we recognise that there is debate as to whether this truly represents absences.</p>
Supplementary materials to: Nano-Strainer: a workflow for identification of single-copy nuclear loci for plant systematic studies, using target capture kits and Oxford Nanopore long reads
<p>In the paper associated with this dataset, a workflow is presented which enables the identification of single-/low-copy nuclear molecular markers for a plant group of interest, by mining data from a small representative target capture experiment done using a commercial probe kit and Oxford Nanopore long-read sequencing. The proposed pipeline first assesses sequence variability contained in the data from targeted loci and assigns reads to their respective genes, via a combined BLAST/clustering procedure. Cluster consensus sequences are then examined based on four pre-defined criteria presumably indicative for absence of paralogy. This is done by calculating four specialized indices; loci are ranked according to their performance in these indices, and top-scoring loci are considered putatively single- or low-copy. The approach can be applied to any probe set. As it relies on long reads, the contribution also provides template workflows for processing Nanopore-based target capture data. Identified loci can be used for NGS amplicon sequencing. For detection of possibly remaining paralogy in these data, which might occur in groups with rampant paralogy, the long-read assembly tool CANU is employed. The presented workflow can be useful for researchers dealing with reticulate or polyploidization phylogenetic histories in plants.</p> <p>The present dataset contains several documents supplementing the original paper. Its most important elements are a detailed description (alongside two graphical workflow figures) of all methods employed in the study, suitable for reproducing the steps of the workflow and also the wet-lab work. The workflow employs a collection of BASH, Python and R scripts which is available here, together with a detailed account on command line use in Linux. Also, reference sequences for the identified markers can be found as well as sequence alignments derived from the amplicon sequencing.</p>
Russian Arctic Vegetation Archive – a new database of plant community composition and environmental conditions
<p><span>The goal of the Russian Arctic Vegetation Archive is to unite and harmonize data of plot-based plant species and their abundance, vegetation structure and environmental variables from the Russian Arctic (including historical Soviet data). This database can be used to assess the status of the Russian Arctic vegetation and as a baseline to assess biodiversity changes in the future. The archive can be used for scientific studies as well as to inform nature protection and restoration efforts.</span></p>
