Forty-one lines in a page.</p> <p>التفسیر النیسابوری</p> <p>A large Commentary on the Koran, properly entitled غرائب القران و رغائب الفرقان, by al-Ḥasan b. Muḥammad Kummî, commonly called NIẒÂM NÎSÂBÛRÎ (a pupil of Naṣîr al-dîn Ṭûsî; flourished at the beginning of the eighth century). See Ḥ. Kh. iv. 306 for an abridgement of the introduction and of the epilogue, in which the author mentions his authorities. His chief authority is the التفسیر الکبیر or مفاتیح الغیب of Fakhr al-dîn Râzî (see No. 65). The explanation of the single passages of the Koran usually consists of two parts, التفسیر and التأویل, preceded by two paragraphs on the reading القراءة and on the pauses الوقوف.</p> <p>Beginning: ربّ یسّر و تمّم بالخیر عونک یا کریم الی الله الکریم ارغب فی ابداء غرائب القران، و بفضله العمیم اتاهّب لابداع رغائب الفرقان، و الیه ینتهی الامل و السول، و هذا حین افتتح فاقول، الحمدلله الذی جعلنا ممّن شرح صدره للاسلام فهو علی نور من ربّه.</p> <p>The last words of the epilogue are wanting in this MS., which ends with the words و اما لاحکام فمنها.<sup>1</sup></p> <p>Well written in a small hand; with some marginal notes.</p> <p>Splendidly ornamented and gilt. Mubârak, commonly known by the poetical name of <a href="https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/nr96002485.html">FAIḌÎ</a> (born A. H. 954, at Agra, died A. H. 1004). Cf. Ḥ. Kh. iii. 629; Cat. Lugd. iv. 42; and <a href="http://worldcat.org/identities/lccn-n82043298/">Sprenger</a> <a href="http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3344757">Cat. MSS Oudh</a>, p. 127.</p> <p>A very curious composition, in which all letters with diacritical points are avoided. The author began it at the suggestion of his father Mubârak (d. A. H. 1001), and having been interrupted in is labours by a political mission in the service of Akbar,<sup>2</sup> completed it in A. H. 1002 at Lahore.</p> <p>The preface begins:</p> <p>الله لا اله الّا هو، لا اعلمه ما هو، و ما ادرکه کما هو، احامد المحامد، و محامد الاحامد، لله مصعدًا (مُصْعِدِ .r) لوامع العلم و ملهم سواطع الالهام</p> <p>It is followed by a succession of introductory remarks in two chapters. In the first, which is entitled:</p> <p>السواط الصالح (الصوالح r.) لصىر الكلام ، (الحوامل <sup>1</sup>) لاحوال محرّر سواطع الالهام</p> <p>The author gives an account of himself and his family, as well as of the origin and nature of his work. Those names and dates which contain letters with diacritical points are expressed by logogriphs. This chapter is concluded by a poem in praise of the present work. The second chapter (foll. 8-16) treats of general subjects, and is inscribed السواطع اللوامع لعلوم کلام الله العلام، و اسراره الصوالح لصدر المرام.</p> <p>An indifferent copy, written in two hands. Jum’ah ‘Arûsî Ḥawîzî, who completed it in A. H. 1065 at Shîrâz, as appears from the following conclusion (fol. 251):</p> <p>تم الجزء الاول من نور الثقلین و اتفق الفراغ منه علی ید مؤلفه العبد الفقیر...عبد علی بن جمعة العروسی الحویزی بدار العلم شیراز...فی المدرسة المبارکة عمرها الله بتعمیر بانیها ..... الخواجة المعظّم و الماجد المکرّم محمد مقیم بن المرحوم المبرود محمد امین الشهیر بالکاشی امدّه الله بالعمر السعید ... و کان ذلک یوم الجمعة السابع و العشرین من شعبان المبارک احد شهور السنة الخامسة بعد الستّین و الالف من هجرة سید الاولین و الآخرین الخ.</p> <p>In the preface, the author speaks as follows on the purpose and principles of his present composition:</p> <p>اما بعد فیقول العبد....انی لما رایت خدمة کتاب الله و المقتبسین من انوار وحی الله سلکوا مسالک مختلفة ..... احببت ان اضیف الی بعض آیات الکتاب المبین، شیا من آثار اهل الذکر المنتجبین، ما یکون مبدیاً بشموس بعض التنزیل، و کاشفًا عن اسرار بعض التاویل، و اما ما نقلت مما ظاهره مخالف لاجماع الطائفة المحقّة فلم اقصد به بیان اعتقاد ولا عمل و انما اوردته لیعلم الناظر المطلع کیف نقل و عمّن نقل لیطلب له من التوجیه ما یخرجه عن ذلک مع انی لم اخل موضعًا من تلک المواضع من نقل ما یضادّه و یکون علیه المعوّل فی الکشف و الابدآ، الخ.</p> <p>He also apologizes for inaccuracies in quoting his two chief authorities, the commentary of ‘Alî b. Ibrâhîm, <sup>1</sup> and the مجمع البیان of Ṭabarsî.<sup>2</sup></p> <p>The whole work is a mere compilation from these and from other Shî’ah books, such as اخبار الرضا, by Ibn Bâbawiah <sup>1</sup> ; تهذیب الاحکام, by Ṭûsî; Ṭabarsî’s <sup>2 </sup>کتاب الاحتجاج; کتاب الخصال; معانی الاخبار or بحر الفوائد; and اصول الکافی. The first volume ends with Sû. 12, and has the following colophon: کتبه الفقیر اقل عباد الله الشیخ جمال الدین حافظ ابن الشیخ عبد الملک الحنفی مذهبا السنی عقیدة القادری طریقا الهندی مولدا البغدادی موطنا عفی عنهما. Cf. Ḥ. Kh. iii. 192, and Bibl. Sprenger. 444.</p> <p>This commentary consists entirely of traditions. The author relates in his preface that he abridged it from another work of his called ترجمان القران <sup>1</sup>, by omitting the Isnâds, with the sole exception of his own immediate authorities and of the author of each tradition. Accordingly, the explanation of Sû. 1 begins: سورة فاتحة الکتاب و اخرج عبد بن حمید فی تفسیره عن ابرهیم قال سالت الاسود عن فاتحة الکتاب امن القران هی قال نعم. Only the first words of the passages to be explained are given.</p> <p>The present MS. ends with Sû. 5. It is well written and ornamented. Foll. 77-80 and 81-84 should be transposed. Nunataryuk Session "Indigenous Peoples, science and climate change in the Arctic: lessons learned and a way forward" at ICASS X
<p>Permafrost coasts in the whole Arctic represent 34% of the world's coasts (Lantuit et al., 2012) and a key interface for human-environmental interactions. These coasts provide essential ecosystem services, exhibit high biodiversity and productivity, and support indigenous lifestyles. At the same time, this coastal zone is a dynamic and vulnerable zone of expanding infrastructure investment and growing health concerns. Climate change is affecting this fragile environment by triggering coastal landscape instability and increased hazard exposure (Forbes et al., 2011). Permafrost thaw in combination with increasing sea level and changing sea-ice cover expose the Arctic coastal and nearshore areas to rapid changes (Fritz et al. 2017). Since 2017, scientists from the Nunataryuk Project are working in cooperation with local communities in order to identify the impacts of thawing land, coast and subsea permafrost on the global climate and on humans in the Arctic and to develop targeted and co-designed adaptation and mitigation strategies.</p>
Community science validates climate suitability projections from ecological niche modeling
<p><span>Climate change poses an intensifying threat to many bird species, and projections of future climate suitability provide insight into how species may shift their distributions in response. Climate suitability is characterized using ecological niche models (ENMs), which correlate species occurrence data with current environmental covariates and project future distributions using the modeled relationships together with climate predictions. Despite their widespread adoption, ENMs rely on several assumptions that are rarely validated <i>in situ </i>and can be highly sensitive to modeling decisions, precluding their reliability in conservation decision-making. Using data from a novel, large-scale community science program, we developed dynamic occupancy models to validate near-term climate suitability projections for bluebirds and nuthatches in summer and winter. We estimated occupancy, colonization, and extinction dynamics across species' ranges in the United States in relation to projected climate suitability in the 2020s, and used a Gibbs variable selection approach to quantify evidence of species-climate relationships. We also included a Bird Conservation Region strata-level random effect to examine among-strata variation in occupancy that may be attributable to land-use and ecoregional differences. Across species and seasons, we found strong evidence that initial occupancy and colonization were positively related to 2020 climate suitability, illustrating an independent validation of projections from ENMs across a large geographic area. </span><span>Random strata effects revealed that occupancy probabilities were generally higher than average in core areas and lower than average in peripheral areas of species' ranges, and served as a first step in identifying spatial patterns of occupancy from these community science data. </span><span>Our findings lend much-needed support to the use of ENM projections for addressing questions about potential climate-induced changes in species' occupancy dynamics. More broadly, </span>our work highlights the value of community scientist observations for ground-truthing projections from statistical models and for refining our understanding of the processes shaping species' distributions under a changing climate.</p>
