Spatiotemporal brain hierarchies of auditory memory recognition and predictive coding - Nature Communications

<p>The full analysis pipeline used in this study is available at the following link:&nbsp;</p> <p>https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.11072410</p> <p>Additional in-house-built code and functions used in this study are part of the LBPD repository which is available at the following link:&nbsp;</p> <p>https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10701724</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Abstract</p> <p>Our brain is constantly extracting, predicting, and recognising key spatiotemporal features of the physical world in order to survive. While neural processing of visuospatial patterns has been extensively studied, the hierarchical brain mechanisms underlying conscious recognition of auditory sequences and the associated prediction errors remain elusive. Using magnetoencephalography (MEG), we describe the brain functioning of 83 participants during recognition of previously memorised musical sequences and systematic variations. The results show feedforward connections originating from auditory cortices, and extending to the hippocampus, anterior cingulate gyrus, and medial cingulate gyrus. Simultaneously, we observe backward connections operating in the opposite direction. Throughout the sequences, the hippocampus and cingulate gyrus maintain the same hierarchical level, except for the final tone, where the cingulate gyrus assumes the top position within the hierarchy. The evoked responses of memorised sequences and variations engage the same hierarchical brain network but systematically differ in terms of temporal dynamics, strength, and polarity. Furthermore, induced-response analysis shows that alpha and beta power is stronger for the variations, while gamma power is enhanced for the memorised sequences. This study expands on the predictive coding theory by providing quantitative evidence of hierarchical brain mechanisms during conscious memory and predictive processing of auditory sequences.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>The data is provided after pre-processing (Maxfilter, ICA for removing eye blink and heart beat, co-registration with the individual MRI T1) and epoching.</p> <p>Source data files are provided for Supplementary Figures and Tables (referred to as Supplementary Data in the paper).</p> <p>Supplementary Figures are provided in PDF format in high resolution.</p>

Distribution, response to human disturbance, habitat preferences, and acoustic communication of tree hyraxes of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

<p><span>This data consists data from recordings done in Mt. Kilimanjaro. Hourly calls of tree hyraxes have been calculated between 19.00 until 06:00. Dataset also has variables collected by other research groups.</span></p> <p><span>We combined our data of cue count per hour with data to analyse tree hyrax density with explanatory variables to model occupancy of tree hyraxes in Kilimanjaro. Dataset was combined from several research projects conducted within the Kili-Project (Hemp et al. 2018) (Table 1). Variables included forest type, temperature (Appelhans et al. 2015) precipitation (Appelhans et al. 2016). diameter breast height (DBH), leaf density, max vegetation height, and leaf area index (LAI) (Rutten et al., 2015). We also included land use index (LUI) (Peters et al. 2019) to the dataset, which included four different variables (percentage plant biomass removal, agricultural inputs, modification of the vegetation and percentage of agricultural area in the surroundings). </span></p> <p><span>Abstract</span></p> <p><span>Limited knowledge exists of the distribution, habitat selection, behavior and response to human disturbance of many mammalian species from mountains of Africa. This is especially true for nocturnal mammals. We studied acoustically very active tree hyraxes (<em>Dendrohyrax validus validus</em>) from Mt. Kilimanjaro National Park, Tanzania mainly with bioacoustical methods. To gain understanding of the habitat preferences of tree hyraxes we combined bioacoustical data with botanical and meteorological data collected earlier by <span>KiLi Project</span>. According to GLMM analysis, disturbance caused by logging or forest fires significantly reduced tree hyrax calling activity. In Mt. Kilimanjaro, highest density of tree hyraxes was found from 2750 m a.s.l. It seems that extensive hunting in the past and selective logging below elevation 2500 m caused tree hyraxes to move up the mountain. Calls of tree hyraxes in Mt. Kilimanjaro resemble calls emitted by hyraxes in Taita Hills, Kenya; however, there are clear differences in their calling cultures. In Mt. Kilimanjaro tree hyraxes also sing songs, and their acoustic communication is very active and diverse. In most preferred habitats, groups of tree hyraxes may call 4500&ndash;5500 times during one night. Calling seem to have elements of turn taking and individual signatures. Future of tree hyraxes in large, 650 km<sup>2</sup>, Mt. Kilimanjaro National Park seems promising and perhaps in the future tree hyraxes will recolonize the whole park area again.</span></p>

Brain–muscle tissue communication prevents muscle aging by maintaining daily physiology

<p>A network of molecular clocks is crucial for coordinating daily physiology and maintaining organismal health. However, the mechanisms underlying the interactions between these clocks and the significance of intra-tissue clock networks in muscle tissue maintenance have remained elusive. To uncover this network structure, we established a minimal clock module with the central clock (suprachiasmatic nucleus/brain) and/or a peripheral clock (muscle) in arrhythmic mice with premature aging. We find that reconstituting the brain-muscle clock network alone is sufficient to preserve fundamental daily homeostatic functions and prevent premature muscle aging. However, achieving whole muscle daily physiology requires the contribution of other peripheral clocks. Mechanistically, the muscle peripheral clock acts as a gatekeeper, selectively suppressing signals from the central clock that could be detrimental to muscle function if left uncontrolled while also integrating important muscle homeostatic functions. Our findings unveil the reciprocal interactions between central and peripheral clocks crucial for daily muscle function and highlight the significant influence of eating patterns on these interactions. These insights have implications for promoting healthier aging and reversing age-related muscle pathologies.</p>

ReCANVo: A Dataset of Real-World Communicative and Affective Nonverbal Vocalizations

<p>A dataset of 7077&nbsp;labeled vocalizations made by non-speaking individuals. Each vocalization lasts approximately 0.5-4 seconds and is labeled with its affective or communicative meaning. Data were acquired in real-world settings (homes, schools, etc.) and were labeled in real-time by parents or caregivers who knew the non-speaking communicator well.&nbsp;</p> <p>dataset_file_directory.csv provides the name of each vocalization file,&nbsp;the corresponding participant ID, and the vocalization meaning or label (delighted, frustrated, request, etc.).</p> <p>If you use this dataset, please <strong>cite Johnson&nbsp;&amp; Narain&nbsp;et al.,&nbsp;&quot;ReCANVo: A Database of Real-World Communicative and Affective Nonverbal Vocalizations&quot;</strong>. Organizational cynicism, silence, gossip, "onstage communication", "offstage communication"

<p>Three datasets: Study 1, Study2, Study 3 relate to the consequences of organizational cynicism, which are negative gossip about the supervisor and employee silence. The eleven item scale of organizational cynicism developed by Brandes, Dharwadkar and Dean and presented by Kim et al. (2009) was used to measure the three aspects of organizational cynicim.&nbsp;In order to measure employee silence, the Four Forms of Employee Silence Scale (Knoll &amp; van Dick, 2013, adapted by Adamska &amp; Jurek, 2017)&nbsp;was used.&nbsp;To measure negative gossip about a supervisor a subscale of Work Gossip Scale developed by Brady et al. Autonomous Vehicle Communication Strategies Modeled in Virtual Reality

<p>We sought to better understand how autonomous vehicle (AV) communication strategies impact human road users&rsquo; perceptions and behaviors. More specifically, we explored the impact of different external human-machine interface (eHMI) designs on understanding, task load, comfort, trust, acceptance, and reaction time. To accomplish this, we created virtual reality (VR) scenarios where human participants interacted with AVs. Participants experienced biking, driving, and pedestrian simulators and were brought back after initial testing to explore acclimation and learning effects. In terms of perceptions, the presence of an eHMI was the strongest predictor of understanding, comfort, trust, and acceptance outcomes in the statistical models when controlling for all other variables. There was a clear divide between text-based eHMIs and non-text eHMIs, with text-based eHMIs reporting better perception scores and the LED Windshield reporting the worst perception scores. There were perception acclimation effects detected (most notable for task load and comfort), but they had less of an impact than the presence of an eHMI. Perception outcomes had weaker relationships with participant characteristics than with AV characteristics. While behavioral outcomes should be interpreted with caution because of low participant sample sizes, behavioral results largely mirrored perception results in that significant reductions in reaction time were observed with the presence of an eHMI (3.69 second reduction), yielding (3.16 second reduction), and acclimation (0.134 second reduction per trial). Results suggest that eHMI design, AV behavior, and acclimation are most impactful in terms of both perceptions and reaction time.</p>

Data from: Acclimation in ants: Interference of communication and waterproofing through cuticular hydrocarbons in a multifunctional trait

<p>Organismal traits may experience conflicting selection pressures if they fulfil different functions simultaneously. This can require trade-offs between functions or alternatively functional separation between elements of the trait.</p> <p>An important multifunctional trait in insects is the cuticular hydrocarbon (CHCs) layer. CHCs cover the body of nearly all insects, protect against desiccation and serve as a communication signal. In social insects like ants, they provide cues for nestmate recognition. To maintain their waterproofing function, insects have to adjust CHC composition to current temperatures. These changes might affect information content and interfere with communication, which would be especially detrimental in social insects.</p> <p>Here, we studied how acclimation affects nestmate recognition in two sister species of the ant genus <em>Lasius</em>. Colony fragments were exposed to three climate regimes. We analysed behaviour towards same and differently acclimated conspecifics, and determined which CHCs were related to acclimatory changes, colony differences, and inter-individual aggression.</p> <p>Differential acclimation led to higher aggression and chemical distances among former nestmates. We identified small CHC subsets, which only differed among colonies or among acclimation treatments. Moreover, few compounds sufficed to explain inter-individual aggression, suggesting that ants do not use the entire CHC profile for nestmate recognition and that colony identity is encoded in a redundant way.</p> <p>Across individual CHCs, their contribution to colony differences and to differences among acclimatory treatments was negatively correlated, indicating that there is some degree of functional separation. However, CHC classes could not be clearly assigned to one or another function, indicating that the role of each CHC is idiosyncratic and may differ among species. Acclimatory effects and colony differences were more independent from each other in <em>L. platythorax </em>than in <em>L. niger</em>, indicating that functional separation can differ even among sister species.</p> <p>Our results show that CHC functions are more intertwined than previously assumed, suggesting that insects cannot optimise all functions independently. The main constraint might be the need to maintain a certain phase behaviour of the CHC layer, which depends on CHC composition and affects functionality. The need to separate functions might depend on species-specific ecological and life-history parameters.</p>

Viral Communication: Trajectories of Experience through the Pandemic - A Qualitative Longitudinal Dataset

<p>Here, we present a dataset collected within a longitudinal interview study that has been conducted as part of a larger project (i.e., Viral Communication), exploring (changing) public attitudes and behaviours through the course of the pandemic in Germany. From a nationally representative survey, forty participants were purposively sampled on the basis of gender, age and socioeconomic status for the interviews. Each participant was interviewed three times within a 10 month time frame (between December 2020 and September 2021), with the exception of two dropouts from the study. The semi-structured interviews were developed to further elaborate on some of the responses in the survey instrument and to provide additional insights into topics and controversies surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic in Germany, such as information/misinformation, trust/distrust, compliance, vaccination, and conspiracy beliefs.&nbsp;</p> <ul> <li>Interviews Phase I (December 2020): 40 Interviews</li> <li>Interviews Phase II (April 2021): 38 Interviews</li> <li>Interviews Phase III (September 2021): 38 Interviews</li> </ul>
