DDS (Device-Degraded Speech) Dataset - VCTK portion - Part 2
<p>DDS (Device-Degraded Speech) dataset provides aligned parallel recordings of high-quality speech (recorded in professional studios) and a large number of versions of low-quality speech, producing approximately 2,000 hours speech data. </p> <p>DDS is built on top of two datasets: DAPS and VCTK. We play clean speech recordings (4 hours from DAPS and 8 hours from VCTK) and re-record waveforms in nine environments (two offices, two conference rooms, three studios, one living room, one waiting room) on three different devices (one MEMS and two condenser microphones), producing 27 different recording conditions. Habitat geometry in artificial microstructure affects bacterial and fungal growth, interactions, and substrate degradation 2nd part
<p>Microhabitat conditions determine the magnitude and speed of microbial processes but have been challenging to investigate. In this study we used microfluidic devices to determine the effect of the spatial distortion of a pore space on fungal and bacterial growth<i>,</i> interactions, and substrate degradation. The devices contained channels differing in bending angles and order. Sharper angles reduced fungal and bacterial biomass, especially when angles were repeated in the same direction. Substrate degradation was only decreased by angles when fungi and bacteria were grown together. Investigation at the cellular scale suggests that this was caused by fungal habitat modification, which branched in sharp and repeated turns, blocking the dispersal of bacteria and the substrate. Our results demonstrate how the geometry of microstructures can influence microbial activity. This can be transferable to soil pore spaces, where spatial occlusion and microbial feedback on microstructures is thought to explain organic matter stabilization.</p>
Removing climbers more than doubles tree growth and biomass in degraded tropical forests
<p>Huge areas of tropical forests are degraded, reducing their biodiversity, carbon, and timber value. The recovery of these degraded forests can be significantly inhibited by climbing plants such as lianas. Removal of super-abundant climbers thus represents a restoration action with huge potential for application across the tropics. While experimental studies largely report positive impacts of climber removal on tree growth and biomass accumulation, the efficacy of climber removal varies widely, with high uncertainty as to where and how to apply the technique. Using meta-analytic techniques, we synthesise results from 26 studies to quantify the efficacy of climber removal for promoting tree growth and biomass accumulation. We find that climber removal increases tree growth by 156% and biomass accumulation by 209% compared to untreated forest, and that efficacy remains for at least 19 years. Extrapolating from these results, climber removal could sequester an additional 32 Gigatons of CO<sub>2</sub> over 10 years, at low cost, across regrowth and production forests. Our analysis also revealed that climber removal studies are concentrated in the Neotropics (N=22), relative to Africa (N=2) and Asia (N=2), preventing our study from assessing the influence of region on removal efficacy. While we found some evidence that enhancement of tree growth and AGB accumulation varies across disturbance context and removal method, but not across climate, the number and geographical distribution of studies limits the strength of these conclusions. Climber removal could contribute significantly to reducing global carbon emissions and enhancing the timber and biomass stocks of degraded forests, ultimately protecting them from conversion. However, we urgently need to assess the efficacy of removal outside the Neotropics and consider the potential negative consequences of climber removal under drought conditions and for biodiversity.</p>
Seed dormancy and germination traits of 27 species inhabiting the degraded karst mountain from central Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau: Seed mass and moisture content correlates with germination capacity
<p>Seed dormancy and germination play an important roles in regulating germination timing and plant fitness in harsh environment, especially for fragile karst region. Broadening the knowledge regarding seed ecology of native plant species can improve local restoration management due to the increased biodiversity and success of seedling establishment, yet few studies have addressed this. We examined the dormancy types and germination responses to temperature regimes as well as light conditions of totally 27 that were dominant or common species inhabiting a degraded karst mountain from central Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and assessed the relationships between seed traits and germination index using a partial least squares regression (PLSR). Approximately 48% of the investigated species exhibited physiological dormancy, 37% exhibited nondormancy, 7% exhibited morphophysiological dormancy, 4% exhibited morphological dormancy and 4% exhibited physical dormancy. Germination behaviors occurred in 16 of 27 species. The seed germination of 13 species strongly responded to seasonal temperature regimes, whereas 12 species were substantially affected by light conditions. About 94% species germinated to the maximum percent in warm temperature regimes (20/13 and 25/18 °C), while the remaining was in cool temperature regime (10/4 °C). The PLSR analysis indicated a significant positive correlation between seed mass and T50 m (time to 50% final germination), and a negative correlation between seed moisture content and percent germination, showing that small seeds, particularly those with a low moisture content, were more likely to have a greater germination capacity (including relative less germination time and higher germination percent) than large seeds in harsh karst environments. In general, these results strengthen the understanding of seed dormancy classification of dormant species and germination requirements of nondormant ones that representative of pioneer species of early stage of positive succession in seriously degraded sites and provide suggestion for species selection in local seed-based vegetation restoration.</p>

Data from: Thermal failure of diamond tools indicated by diamond degradation: Damage evaluation and property prediction on small image datasets
<p>High temperature induced diamond degradation often leads to the failure of diamond tools. In this work, diamond samples holding different degrees of thermal damage were prepared by heating and sintering. The influence of diamond particle size and processing temperature was investigated through mechanical testing and micromorphology observation, meanwhile, a dataset containing 2870 SEM images showing diamonds with different degrees of degradation was constructed. By modification of VGG16 network, classification models and regression models were developed for thermal damage evaluation and sample property prediction. Training strategies including transfer learning and data augmentation were implemented and verified essential on the small dataset, where drop-out showed no positive effects. Two classification models (3-class and 65-class) were constructed and trained for damage evaluation. Visualized damage feature maps exported from Grad-CAM revealed the influential mechanism of thermal damage on diamonds, which proved the effectiveness of the classification models as well. Under the optimized training strategies, regression models were built for sample property prediction. The models towards toughness index, bending strength loss, relative density and Rockwell hardness were examined. Comparing the output results with real property values in test sets, the first two models matched well, and the latter two showed the opposite. It verified the validity of the regression models for property prediction as they were all established based on diamond damage image datasets. The loss in bending strength loss prediction model was smaller than that of toughness index, indicating bending strength easier to be shorten than impact toughness for diamond/metal composites suffering thermal impacts.</p>

<p>Almost half of grasslands worldwide are degraded due to overgrazing or other forms of mismanagement, causing a severe decline in carbon uptake capacity. Therefore, through restoration, degraded grasslands are expected to have a high potential for carbon uptake. However, the strength of carbon uptake rate in degraded grasslands with effective restoration measures, such as nutrient amendment, is poorly evaluated. By combining a meta-analysis of nutrient effects on carbon fluxes in degraded vs. non-degraded grasslands in China with a nutrient amendment experiment in a degraded grassland, we evaluated the carbon uptake potential in degraded grasslands. </p>

<p><span>3D templates of a long-term storable bottom collector for window or pitfall traps. The collection medium in a LEE trap barely evaporates and does not dilute because water is excluded, maximizing DNA preservation. Based on field-collected specimens and lab experiments, we confirm that the LEE significantly outperforms conventional traps in terms of DNA quality. </span></p>
The midnolin-proteasome pathway catches proteins for ubiquitination-independent degradation
<p class="MsoNormal">Cells use ubiquitin to mark proteins for proteasomal degradation. While the proteasome also eliminates proteins that are not modified by ubiquitin, how this occurs mechanistically is unclear. We show here that midnolin promotes the destruction of many nuclear proteins including transcription factors encoded by the immediate-early-genes. Diverse environmental cues induce midnolin and its overexpression is sufficient to cause the degradation of its targets by a mechanism, which, remarkably, does not require ubiquitination. Instead, midnolin associates with the proteasome via <span>an alpha</span><span>-helix</span>, employs its Catch-domain to bind a region within substrates that adopts a beta-strand conformation, and uses a ubiquitin-like-domain to promote substrate destruction. Thus, midnolin contains three regions that function in concert to target a large set of nuclear proteins to the proteasome for degradation. </p>
