Data from: Contemporary distribution of non-native Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) in South America

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>The dataset incorporates information on Chinook salmon occurrences by basin in South America, which was obtained from the literature and from unpublished information obtained from research monitoring efforts conducted in Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay. The information was divided into two periods: historical (prior to 2006) and contemporary information (2006 onwards). Year or range of years in which the observation was taken was also included. This dataset was used to construct Fig. 1 of the manuscript "<span class="fontstyle0">Contemporary distribution of non-native Chinook salmon (</span><em><span class="fontstyle2">Oncorhynchus tshawytscha</span></em><span class="fontstyle0">) in South America</span>".</span></p>

The timid invasion: Behavioural adjustments and range expansion in a non-native rodent

<p><span>Animal behaviour can moderate</span> <span>or favour biological invasion processes, and the native fauna's ability to adapt. The importance of behavioural traits for colonization success remains debated, as well as the nature of behavioural traits that facilitate colonization. We investigated behavioural responses associated with risk-taking and exploration, in both non-native bank voles (<em>Myodes</em> <em>glareolus</em>, N = 225) accidentally introduced to Ireland a century ago, and in native wood mice (<em>Apodemus</em> <em>sylvaticus</em>, N = 189), that decline in numbers with vole expansion. </span></p> <p><span>We repeatedly sampled behavioural responses in three colonization zones: source (2 sites), expansion edge (4) and pre-arrival(2).  Only source and edge zones are occupied by bank voles, for more than 80 years and 1-4 years, respectively. </span></p> <p><span>Individuals of both species varied consistently in risk-taking and exploration, and mice had not adjusted their behaviour to the presence of non-native voles, as their behaviour did not differ between the zones. Voles at the expansion edge were initially more risk-averse but habituated to the repeated testing situation, compared to voles that were consistently less risk-averse in the source population, indicating spatial sorting for risk-taking propensity along the expansion front We suggest that in non-native species under high predation pressure, the ability to develop timid phenotypes may thus represent a fundamental component for range expansions.</span></p>

<p>Data from&nbsp;Preliminary estimates of genetic parameters and familial selection for non-native poplars show good potential for genetic gains on growth, cold hardiness, trunk quality and <em>Sphaerulina musiva</em> susceptibility</p> <p><br> Abstract<br> Genetic parameters for growth, trunk quality and susceptibility to frost and <em>Sphaerulina musiva</em> attack was estimated from 34 half-sib families of hybrid poplar from the crossing of non-native parents, <em>Populus maximowiczii</em> A. Henry and <em>Populus trichocarpa</em> Torr. &amp; Gray, 3 and 6 years after planting. The use of spatial analysis proved to be the best method for quantitative growth data. The proportion of the among-family variance to the total (phenotypic) variance as well as the high heritabilities of growth and susceptibility to frost and <em>Spaherulina musiva</em> showed a high potential for selection for these traits while the quality traits were under low genetic control. Some families showed gains for several traits, suggesting the possibility of developing a selection index to obtain superior families that show gain for not only growth but quality and adaptive traits as well. Type B correlations were high, suggesting that families responded in the same way regardless of the site. High type A correlation between growth traits at 3 and 6 years showed early selection potential, although these relationships should be confirmed with future measurements to evaluate this effect at maturity. These results can be integrated into the strategy for improving hybrid poplar parental populations and, in the longer term, will make it possible to optimize the selection of individuals with traits of interest for the operational deployment of hybrid poplar clones.</p>

Data from: Non-native mammals are weak candidates to substitute ecological function of native avian seed-dispersers in an island ecosystem

<p>Although prominent examples exist of non-native species causing substantial ecological harm, many have neutral or positive effects, including filling surrogate roles once performed by extinct native organisms. We tested the ecological roles of two non-native mammals as seed dispersers or seed predators in Guåhan, which, due to invasive brown treesnakes (<em>Boiga</em> <em>irregularis</em>), is devoid of native seed dispersers – birds and bats. We conducted feeding trials with captive rats (<em>Rattus</em> spp.), which are present but uncommon due to predation by snakes, and pigs (<em>Sus</em> <em>scrofa</em>), which are abundant. We examined if and how they interacted with common forest fruits. We then compared how any gut-passed or handled seeds germinated compared to seeds left in whole fruit or depulped seeds.</p> <p>Rats and pigs interacted with most of the fruits and seeds (&gt;80%) that they were fed. Of those, most seeds were destroyed – 78% for rats and 90% for pigs, across both native and non-native plant species. Compared to seeds germinating within whole fruits, rats improved germination of the seeds that they handled without ingesting, while pigs diminished the germination of seeds that they handled. The small percentage of seeds (approximately 1.5% for rats and 5% for pigs) that survived gut passage germinated in higher proportions than those in whole fruits. Percentages of seed survival to germination are lower than those found in similar studies with native avian frugivores. Our results indicate that pigs and rats have mixed effects on seeds, but are not suitable surrogates for native seed dispersers.</p>

Analysing spatio-temporal patterns of non-native fish in a biodiversity hotspot across decades

<p><strong>Aim</strong>: Analysing the spatio-temporal patterns and dynamics of non-native species is essential to understanding the mechanisms underlying successful invasions and developing effective management strategies. Yet, such analyses generally neglect the influence of receiving ecosystem types and non-native species sources (i.e. alien species, non-natives originating outside the concerned region; translocated species, nonnatives introduced to locations outside their historical range within the concerned region). </p> <p><strong>Location</strong>: Yunnan, China.</p> <p><strong>Methods</strong>: We analysed long-term (1950–2022) spatio-temporal patterns and potential underlying dynamics of non-native fishes in a biodiversity hotspot (Yunnan, China), paying special attention to waterbody types receiving non-native species and comparing alien and translocated species. We did this through compiling a highly comprehensive occurrence dataset of native and non-native fishes.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong>: We recorded 783 native species and 94 non-native species (49 alien species and 45 translocated species), which mainly belonged to the order Cypriniformes (52 species) and were introduced via purposes for advancing aquaculture. Most frequently encountered non-native species were either intentionally introduced aquaculture species or small-bodied fish unintentionally introduced via aquaculture activities. The richness and spatial ranges of non-native fishes increased consistently since the 1950s and demonstrated a pronounced change after the 2000s, with densely populated areas and the middle to lower reaches of large rivers being more profoundly affected. The number of records of translocated species exceeded the number of records of alien species after the 2000s. Lakes and reservoirs are hotspots for both alien and translocated species introductions, and watersheds with large areas in Yunnan (e.g. the Jinsha-Yangtze and Lancang-Mekong basins) contained more non-native fish.</p> <p><strong>Main Conclusions</strong>: Our study highlights the need to consider invasion sensitivities of receiving ecosystems and pay special attention to intra-regional species translocations when developing prevention and management strategies against invasions of alien species, particularly in important biodiversity hotspots around the world.</p>
