Cryptogam plant community stability: warming weakens influences of species richness but enhances effects of evenness

<p>Community stability is a fundamental factor sustaining ecosystem functioning and is affected by species richness and species evenness. The Arctic is warming more rapidly than other biomes, and cryptogam plant species (specifically lichens and bryophytes in this study) are major contributors to tundra biodiversity and productivity. However, to our knowledge, the impacts of warming on cryptogam community stability and the underlying mechanisms have not been investigated. We conducted a 13-year summer warming experiment in mesic birch hummock tundra vegetation near Daring Lake in the continental interior of low Arctic Canada, and recorded patterns of cryptogam species abundance in several different growing seasons. Warming decreased the stability of total community abundance, had no effects on species richness, but increased species evenness and species synchrony. Structural equation model analyses indicated that higher species richness was the principal factor associated with the stronger community abundance stability in the control plots, and that this effect was driven primarily by a negative correlation with species synchrony. By contrast, higher species evenness was the principal factor associated with the weakened community abundance stability in the warming plots, and this effect was driven primarily by a positive correlation with species synchrony. Our study suggests that climate warming could reduce cryptogam plant community stability in low Arctic tundra, and therefore decrease important ecosystem services including carbon storage and food availability to caribou in northern regions.</p>

Core-shell structured chitosan-polyethylenimine nanoparticles for gene delivery: Improved stability, cellular uptake, and transfection efficiency

<p>Gene therapy has emerged as a promising treatment option for various acquired and inherited diseases. The delivery of nucleic acids relies on so-called vectors that condense and encapsulate their cargo, generating stable nano-sized particles. Especially non-viral gene delivery systems are of increasing interest. However, accomplishing therapeutic levels of transgene expression and limited tolerability of these systems remain a challenge. Therefore, we investigate in the present study the improvement of nucleic acid delivery using depolymerized chitosan &ndash; polyethylenimine DNA core complexes (dCS-PEI/DNA). These core complexes are further entrapped into a variety of dCS-based shells, functionalized with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) spacers conjugated to ionic moieties (amino or carboxylate groups) and cell penetrating peptides. This modular approach allowed to evaluate the effect of the shell functional components on the physico-chemical particle characteristics and biological effects <em>in vitro</em>. The optimized ternary complex combines a core-dCS-LPEI/DNA complex with a shell consisting of dCS-PEG-COOH, which resulted in improved encapsulation of nucleic acid, accelerated cellular uptake, enhanced transfection efficiency, and superior transfection potency in human hepatoma HuH-7 cells and mouse primary hepatocytes. Effects on transgene expression are confirmed <em>in vivo</em> in wild-type mice following retrograde intrabiliary infusion. After administration to mice of only 100 ng complexed nanovector DNA, ternary complexes induce a high reporter gene signal for three days. We conclude that ternary core-shell structured particles comprising functionalized chitosan are a promising gene delivery technology for both <em>in vitro</em> as well as <em>in vivo </em>applications. The modular design will facilitate the development of chemically modified derivatives.</p>

Emerging stability of forest productivity by mixing two species buffers temperature destabilizing effect

<p><span>The increasing disturbances in monocultures around the world </span><span>are</span><span> testimony to their instability under global change. Many studies have claimed that temporal stability of productivity increase with species richness, although the ecological fundaments have mainly been investigated through diversity experiments. To adequately manage forest ecosystems, it is necessary to have a comprehensive understanding of the effect of mixing species on the temporal stability of productivity and the way in which this it is influenced by climate conditions across large geographical areas. </span></p> <p><span>Here, we </span><span>used a unique dataset of 261 stands combining pure and two-species mixtures of four relevant tree species over a wide range of climate conditions in Europe to examine the effect of species mixing on the level and temporal stability of productivity. </span><span>Structural equation modelling was employed to further explore the direct and</span> <span>indirect influence of</span><span> climate</span><span>, overyielding, species asynchrony and additive effect (i.e. temporal stability expected from the species growth in monospecific stands) on temporal stability in mixed forests. </span></p> <p><span>We showed that by adding only one tree species to monocultures</span><span>,</span><span> the level (overyielding: +6%) </span><span>and </span><span>stability (temporal stability: +12%) of stand growth increased significantly. We </span><span>identified </span><span>the key effect of temperature on destabilizing stand growth, which may be mitigated by mixing species. We further </span><span>confirmed</span><span> asynchrony as </span><span>the </span><span>main driver of temporal stability in mixed stands, through both the additive effect and species interactions, which modify between-species asynchrony in mixtures in comparison to monocultures. </span></p> <p><span>Synthesis and applications</span><span>.</span> <span>This study highlights the emergent properties associated with mixing two-species, which result in resource efficient and temporally stable production systems. We reveal the negative impact of mean temperature on temporal stability of forest productivity and how the stabilizing effect of mixing two species can counterbalance this impact. </span><span>The overyielding and temporal stability of growth addressed in this paper are essential for ecosystem services closely linked with the level and rhythm of forest growth. </span><span>Our results underline that mixing two species can be a realistic and effective nature-based climate solution, which could contribute towards meeting EU climate target policies. </span></p>

Weight stability in adults with obesity initiating medical marijuana treatment

<p>Few studies have evaluated weight change in patients who initiate medical marijuana treatment to address diagnosed health concerns. The objective of this study was to examine whether patients initiating medical marijuana use for a qualifying health condition experienced changes in health and biopsychosocial functioning over time, including weight gain or loss. Specifically, this observational, longitudinal study evaluated changes in the Body Mass Index (BMI) of adults with co-morbid obesity (Body Mass Index [BMI] ≥ 30 kg/m2) and severe obesity (BMI ≥ 40 kg/m2) who were starting medical marijuana treatment for any of the 23 qualifying medical conditions at one of three dispensaries in Pennsylvania. Height and weight measurements were collected at baseline (prior to medical marijuana use) and then 90 days (± 14 days) later. Participants included in analyses (n = 52, M = 55.0 ± 13.6 years, 59.6% female) had a mean baseline BMI of 36.2 ± 5.4 kg/m2 and the majority sought medical marijuana for chronic pain (73.1%). No significant change in BMI was observed from baseline to month three (p &gt; 0.05) in the sample. Additionally, no significant change in BMI was observed in the subset of patients with severe obesity (n = 12, p &gt; 0.05). Our findings are limited by low follow-up rates and convenience sampling methodology but may help to mitigate weight gain concerns in the context of medical marijuana use.</p>

Data underpinning "Local integrals of motion and the stability of many-body localisation in disorder-free systems"

<p>Many-body localisation in disordered systems in one spatial dimension is typically understood in terms of the existence of an extensive number of (quasi)-local integrals of motion (LIOMs) which are thought to decay exponentially with distance and interact only weakly with one another. By contrast, little is known about the form of the integrals of motion in disorder-free systems which exhibit localisation. Here, we explicitly compute the LIOMs for disorder-free localised systems, focusing on the case of a linearly increasing potential. We show that while in the absence of interactions, the LIOMs decay faster than exponentially, the addition of interactions leads to the formation of a spatially extended plateau. We study how varying the linear slope affects the localisation properties of the LIOMs, finding that there is a significant finite-size dependence, and present evidence that adding a weak harmonic potential does not result in typical many-body localisation phenomenology. By contrast, the addition of disorder has a qualitatively different effect, dramatically modifying the properties of the LIOMs. Based on this, we speculate that disorder-free localisation is unlikely to be stable at long times and for large systems.</p>

Data from: Nitrogen enrichment alters multiple dimensions of grassland functional stability via changing compositional stability

<p>Anthropogenic nutrient enrichment is known to alter the composition and functioning of plant communities. However, how nutrient enrichment influences multiple dimensions of community- and ecosystem-level stability remains poorly understood. Using data from a nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) addition experiment in a temperate semi-arid grassland that experienced a natural drought, we show that N enrichment, not P enrichment, decreased grassland functional and compositional temporal stability, resistance, and recovery, but increased functional and compositional resilience. Compositional stability and species asynchrony, rather than species diversity, were identified as key determinants of all dimensions of grassland functional stability, except for recovery. Whereas grassland functional recovery was decoupled from compositional recovery, N enrichment altered other dimensions of functional stability primarily through changing their corresponding compositional stability dimensions. Our findings highlight the need to examine ecological stability at the community level for a more mechanistic understanding of ecosystem dynamics in the face of environmental change.</p>

Data from: Linking environmental stability with genetic diversity and population structure in two Atlantic Forest palm trees

<p><span>Spatial patterns of biodiversity in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil are well characterized. However, there is no consensus on the biological processes underlying these patterns, and multiple competing hypotheses have been proposed, several of which center on climatic stability. Here, we ask if Late Quaternary climatic stability predicts contemporary population structure and genomic-level diversity in two palm species: </span><span>Syagrus botryophora </span><span>and S. pseudococos (Arecaceae)</span></p> <p><span>We first use species occurrence data to model the distribution of suitable environments in 62 time-slice climate projections over the last 120 thousand years, and summarize stability over that period. We then use &gt;25,000 RADseq-generated SNPs to i) describe the spatial patterns of genomic variation in both species, ii) test how well genomic variation is explained by isolation by distance and by the environmental resistance imposed by historical instability (isolation by resistance) and iii) test for a correlation between genetic diversity and historical stability.</span></p> <p><span>The contemporary range of S. botryophora has been relatively stable over the last 30 thousand years and there are two isolated regions of high stability for S. pseudococos. The genomic data recovers a clear pattern of isolation by distance in S. botryophora and two structured populations in S. pseudococos. Consequently, the contribution of isolation by resistance to overall genetic structure is much higher in S. pseudococos. Genetic diversity is not significantly correlated with historical stability in either species.</span></p> <p><span>Based on the concordance between historical stability and genetic structure, Late Quaternary climate stability may have maintained population connectivity within S. botryophora and promoted intraspecific divergence in S. pseudococos. Conversely, historical stability does not seem to be driving spatial patterns of genetic diversity. This study supports the primary role of climatic stability in determining spatial population structure, but not genetic diversity, in the Atlantic Forest.</span></p>

Temporal stability of polymorphic Arctic charr parasite communities reflect sustained divergent trophic niches

<p>Polymorphic Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus populations frequently display distinct differences in habitat use, diet and parasite communities. Changes to the relative species densities and composition of the wider fish community have the potential to alter the habitat-niche of sympatric Arctic charr populations. This study evaluated the temporal stability of the parasite community, diet and stable isotopes (δ13C, δ15N) of three sympatric Arctic charr morphs (piscivore, benthivore and planktivore) from Loch Rannoch, Scotland, in relation to changes to the fish community. All Arctic charr morphs displayed distinct differences parasite communities, diet and stable isotope signatures over time, despite the establishment of four new trophically transmitted parasite taxa, and increased fish and zooplankton consumption by the piscivorous and planktivore morphs respectively. Native parasite prevalence also increased in all Arctic charr morphs. Overall, Loch Rannoch polymorphic Arctic charr morph populations have maintained their distinct trophic niches and parasite communities through time despite changes in the fish community. This result indicates that restocking of a native fish species has the potential to induce shifts in the parasite community and diet of Arctic charr morphs.</p>

Data from: Associations between developmental stability, canalization and phenotypic plasticity in plants with temporally heterogeneous environmental experience

<p>We subjected eight plant species to a first round of alternating inundation and drought vs. constantly moderate water treatments and a second round of water conditions. Fluctuating asymmetry (FA), intra- and inter-individual variations (CV<sub>intra</sub> and CV<sub>inter</sub>), and plasticity in traits were measured and correlations between variables were calculated for each species. Early temporally heterogeneous experience decreased the leaf size of half of the species, but had complex effects on leaf fluctuating asymmetry (FA) and inter-individual variation (CV<sub>inter</sub>) in traits immediately or in late conditions, with little effects on intra-individual variation (CV<sub>intra</sub>). There were several positive correlations between FA and CV<sub>inter</sub>, while there were correlations between CV<sub>inter</sub> and plasticity in early treatments, but negative ones in late treatments.</p>
