Pleiotropy of UK Biobank metabolites
<p>Pleiotropy and genetic correlation are widespread features in GWAS, but they are often difficult to interpret at the molecular level. Here, we perform GWAS of 16 metabolites clustered at the intersection of amino acid catabolism, glycolysis, and ketone body metabolism in a subset of UK Biobank. We utilize the well-documented biochemistry jointly impacting these metabolites to analyze pleiotropic effects in the context of their pathways. Among the 213 lead GWAS hits, we find a strong enrichment for genes encoding pathway-relevant enzymes and transporters. We demonstrate that the effect directions of variants acting on biology between metabolite pairs often contrast with those of upstream or downstream variants as well as the polygenic background. Thus, we find that these outlier variants often reflect biology local to the traits. Finally, we explore the implications for interpreting disease GWAS, underscoring the potential of unifying biochemistry with dense metabolomics data to understand the molecular basis of pleiotropy in complex traits and diseases.</p>

This is the Anglian high cross in the churchyard of All Saints, Bakewell. It's 8th or 9th century, carved sandstone. The photogrammetric model here gives a fair idea of the difficulty in interpreting the carvings; there are various explanations -- I'll add some further comments below. At the top of the surviving part there is a crucifixion -- Jesus's bare legs are dangling down. Survey responses from stakeholders managing, growing, advising or assessing UK populations of Juniperus communis
<p>Increased imports of plants and timber through global trade networks provide frequent opportunities for introduction of novel plant pathogens that can cross-over from commercial to natural environments, threatening native species and ecosystem functioning. Prevention or management of such outbreaks relies on a diversity of cross-sectoral stakeholders acting along the invasion pathway. Yet guidelines are often only produced for a small number of stakeholders, missing opportunities to consider ways to control outbreaks in other parts of the pathway. We used the infection of common juniper with the invasive pathogen <em>Phytophthora austrocedri</em> as a case study to explore the utility of decision tools for managing outbreaks of plant pathogens in the wider environment. We invited stakeholders who manage or monitor juniper populations or supply plants or management advice to participate in a survey exploring their awareness of, and ability to use, an existing decision tree produced by a coalition of statutory agencies augmented with new distribution maps designed by the authors. Awareness of the decision tree was low across all stakeholder groups including those planting juniper for restoration purposes. Stakeholders requested that decision tools contain greater detail about environmental conditions that increase host vulnerability to the pathogen, and clearer examples of when management practices implicated in pathogen introduction or spread should not be adopted. The results demonstrate the need to set clear objectives for the purpose of decision tools and to frame and co-produce them with many different stakeholders, including overlooked groups such as growers and advisory agents, to improve management of pathogens in the wider environment.</p>
Data from: Palaeoscolecids from the Ludlow Series of Leintwardine, Herefordshire (UK) – the latest occurrence of palaeoscolecids in the fossil record.
<p>The documentation of cuticular micro-ornament is vital for the taxonomic assignment of palaeoscolecids – vermiform lower Palaeozoic ecdysozoans interpreted as stem-group priapulans or early diverging panarthropods. This is due to the absence of the character-rich proboscis and tail hooks in palaeoscolecid material not from Burgess Shale-type Konservat-Lagerstätten. Here, the cuticular micro-ornamentation of palaeoscolecids from the upper Silurian (Ludlow) fauna of Leintwardine (Herefordshire, England), is described using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI). This material is taxonomically unstable as it was included in an effective wastebasket genus (Protoscolex) long before these imaging techniques were developed. This reveals the Leintwardine material is most closely comparable to a palaeoscolecid from the Darriwilian (Middle Ordovician) of the Builth-Llandrindod inlier, Powys, Wales and is transferred accordingly to Radnorscolex Botting et al. as Radnorscolex latus Bather. The Leintwardine fauna represents the uppermost stratigraphic occurrence of palaeoscolecids, constrained to the Saetograptus leintwardinensis Zone (lower Ludfordian), and the comparatively sparse Silurian palaeoscolecid record is subsequently discussed. It is hypothesised palaeoscolecids may have become extinct during the mid-Ludfordian Lau Event, the onset of which is recorded in the biozone immediately above the Leintwardine fauna (Bohemograptus Zone). Finally, the British palaeoscolecid fauna is summarised, including a new record from the Dapingian (Middle Ordovician) of Carmarthenshire, South Wales. --</p>

Establishing barriers and needs for increased uptake of alternative weed control across Europe: Survey results from the UK, Latvia, France, Italy, Greece, Sweden and Spain.
<p><span>Reduced use of chemical herbicides and increased uptake of alternative weed control methods will only occur if there is improved understanding of the current barriers and needs of key stakeholders. An online survey about stakeholders’ perspectives and use of alternative weed control methods was carried out with Farmers, Agronomists, Researchers, Policy makers/advisors in 2023. Key barriers and needs were identified to encourage farmers to adopt sustainable weed control approaches which should guide future work addressing the implementation of Integrated Weed Management. Data consists of returned responses of participants across seven countries involved in the OPER8 project. </span></p> <p><span>The OPER8 Project has received funding from The European Union Horizon 2021 Food, Bioeconomy Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment Programme under grant agreement 101060591</span></p>

<p>This dataset is from an experiment aimed to understand the changes in water level and soil moisture dynamics after rewetting of formerly afforested blanket bog areas. Specifically, it was aiming to test whether the water table and soil moisture dynamics in these areas return to those of control areas that had never been drained or afforested. The data span the period of summer 2017- summer 2022/2023, with gaps in individual time series marked with -9999 entries.</p>

Large-scale UK Biobank Whole Body Atlases
<p>Population atlases are commonly utilised in medical imaging to facilitate the investigation of variability across populations. <br>Such atlases enable the mapping of medical images into a common coordinate system, promoting comparability and enabling the study of inter-subject differences. <br>Constructing such atlases becomes particularly challenging when working with highly heterogeneous datasets, such as whole-body images, where subjects show significant anatomical variations.<br>In this work, we propose a pipeline for generating a standardised whole-body atlas for a highly heterogeneous population by partitioning the population into anatomically meaningful subgroups. <br>Using magnetic resonance (MR) images from the UK Biobank dataset, we create six whole-body atlases representing a healthy population average. <br>We furthermore unbias them, and this way obtain a realistic representation of the population.<br>In addition to the anatomical atlases, we generate probabilistic atlases that capture the distributions of abdominal fat (visceral and subcutaneous) and five abdominal organs across the population (liver, spleen, pancreas, left and right kidneys).<br>We demonstrate a clinical application of these atlases, using the differences between subjects with medical conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases and healthy subjects from the atlas space.<br>With this work, we make the constructed anatomical and label atlases publically available and anticipate them to support medical research conducted on whole-body MR images.</p>
CATCH-EyoU: Public Authorities engaging with youth: Interviews: UK
<p>The data set includes discourse analysis and thematic content analysis of interview transcripts collected with UK and regional politicians, local government youth policy officers, public officials and representatives of youth umbrella organizations. The data set consists of a 38 page preliminary report that summarizes themes and discourses emerging from transcribed extracts derived from 14 audio-recorded interviews in the UK. Personal data has been anonymized in order to protect participants’ privacy. </p> <p> </p> <p>This dataset aims to identify discourses and themes emerging from interviews with policy makers regarding whether and to what extent European Youth policies have been implemented at national, regional and local levels in various member states. </p> <p> </p> <p>Previous research has only partially answered these questions; comparing different policy makers’ perspectives, will allow researchers to identify tensions and contradictions in policies implementation, providing new insight for improving policy implementation.</p>

<p>The dataset consists of 348 online news stories from two UK online newspapers (Daily Mail and Evening Standard) during four specific periods of time<strong> </strong>[Period 1: May 7th – May 21th 2014 / Period 2: September 16th – September 30th 2014 / Period 3: May 7th – May 21th 2015 / Period 4: September 16th – September 30th 2015].</p> <p> </p> <p>The aim of the generated dataset is to identify within the UK media products selected the presence or absence of EU values and identities, for example regarding euro-skeptical and/or pro EU arguments, and their relation to young people.</p> <p> </p> <p>The dataset builds on existing media discourse analyses of European issues and young people in the UK media by highlighting contemporary media-based conceptualizations of Europe and young people from both a news and cultural perspective, in the context of a political and social climate where European identity is deeply contested, and where the global migration effects of regional conflicts have also challenged understandings of and claims to European citizenship. </p>
