Dataset: Chinese Mobile Application WeChat Used by German-Speaking Expatriates in China (Survey 2018-19)

<p>This dataset contains the data collected in an online survey on the use of Chinese mobile messaging application WeChat by German-speaking expatriates in China. The survey was conducted in German and was online between November, 2018, and April, 2019. A total of 208 fully answered surveys were submitted through the online platform www.soscisurvey.de. The data collected was exported in the following available formats:&nbsp;Excel, GNU R, SPSS, SQL, and Stata. Manual Topic Annotation of German Novels and Parlament Protocols by multiple Annotators

Empirical investigations on quantifier scope ambiguities in German

<p>The paper presents the results of a novel experimental study on inverse scope readings in German, which are considered to be possible only under highly constrained conditions in prior literature (Frey 1993; Pafel, 2005; Bobaljik &amp; Wurmbrand, 2012). We show that inverse scope readings are in fact possible in canonical main clauses with an &exist; -subject QP preceding and c-commanding an &forall;-object QP under verum focus, with the potential of object-scrambling over the subject. The existing literature on quantifier scope in German is unanimous in claiming that inverse scope is impossible in this configuration. Our findings are line with previous experiments on German that found inverse readings to be available in other syntactic configurations (e.g. Bott &amp; Rad&oacute;, 2007; Rad&oacute; &amp; Bott 2011; Bott &amp; Schlotterbeck, 2015). Moreover, the availability of inverse readings is boosted when the context biases towards them, a finding which is compatible with previous evidence suggesting that context plays an important role in scope ambiguity resolution (Kurtzman &amp; MacDonald, 1993; Saba &amp; Corriveau, 2001; Villalta, 2003; Reinhart, 2006). Our results also suggest that inverse readings are not banned from relative clauses, a result that is incompatible with the assumptions that relative clauses are islands, and that inverse scope interpretations are obtained via the covert movement operation QR in syntax. Finally, we show that scope interpretation strategies differ drastically between speakers of the same language, in line with introspective judgments.</p>

Data from: 10 years of life in compost: temporal and spatial variation of North German C. elegans populations

The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans is a central laboratory model system in almost all biological disciplines, yet its natural life history and population biology are largely unexplored. Such information is essential for in-depth understanding of the nematode's biology because its natural ecology provides the context, in which its traits and the underlying molecular mechanisms evolved. We characterized natural phenotypic and genetic variation among North German C. elegans isolates. We used the unique opportunity to compare samples collected 10 years apart from the same compost heap and additionally included recent samples for this and a second site, collected across a 1.5-year period. Our analysis revealed significant population genetic differentiation between locations, across the 10-year time period, but for only one location a trend across the shorter time frame. Significant variation was similarly found for phenotypic traits of likely importance in nature, such as choice behavior and population growth in the presence of pathogens or naturally associated bacteria. Phenotypic variation was significantly influenced by C. elegans genotype, time of isolation, and sampling site. The here studied C. elegans isolates may provide a valuable, genetically variable resource for future dissection of naturally relevant gene functions.

Data from: Diet specialization in an extreme omnivore: nutritional regulation in glucose-averse German cockroaches

Organisms have diverse adaptations for balancing dietary nutrients, but often face trade-offs between ingesting nutrients and toxins in food. While extremely omnivorous cockroaches would seem excluded from such dietary trade-offs, German cockroaches (Blattella germanica) in multiple populations have rapidly evolved a unique dietary specialization – an aversion to glucose, the phagostimulant in toxic baits used for pest control. We used factorial feeding experiments within the geometric framework to test whether glucose-averse (GA) cockroaches with limited access to this critical metabolic fuel have compensatory behavioural and physiological strategies for meeting nutritional requirements. GA cockroaches had severely constrained intake, fat and N mass, and performance on glucose-based diets relative to wild-type (WT) cockroaches and did not appear to exhibit digestive strategies for retaining undereaten nutrients. However, a GA × WT 'hybrid' had lower glucose aversion than GA and greater access to macronutrients within glucose-based diets – while still having lower intake and survival than WT. Given these intermediate foraging constraints, hybrids may be a reservoir for this maladaptive trait in the absence of positive selection and may account for the rapid evolution of this trait following bait application.

Data from: Morphological and molecular diagnostic species characters of Staurozoa (Cnidaria) collected on the coast of Helgoland (German Bight, North Sea)

Scientific knowledge and records on staurozoans are limited probably because of their inconspicuous life habit and the small number of specialists for this taxon. To increase the awareness for Staurozoa, we identified morphological and molecular features of the three staurozoan species Haliclystus tenuis Kishinouye, 1910, Haliclystus auricula Clark, 1863, and Craterolophus convolvulus (Johnston, 1835) collected on the coast of the island Helgoland to evaluate their suitability as diagnostic characters. Useful macromorphological diagnostic features were the patterns of white spots of nematocysts and internal arm structures, whereas tentacle and gonad follicle numbers showed high intraspecific variations. Morphometric measurements on photographs of living specimens provided reliable data for interspecific comparisons. Comprehensive nematocyst analyses revealed interspecific shape differences of isorhizas and three types of rhopaloids, indicating that the staurozoan cnidome is more diverse than previously assumed. However, the taxonomic value of nematocyst analyses in Staurozoa remains unclear because comprehensive data is still lacking for most species. Comparative molecular genetic sequence analyses of mitochondrial 16S and COI and nuclear 18S ribosomal DNA identified the three species and confirmed their morphological identification. In comparison to published data, our analyses indicate similarities between H. auricula and Haliclystus antarcticus Pfeffer, 1889. Proteomic fingerprinting by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) differentiated all three species, suggesting that this technique could provide an alternative rapid identification method for staurozoans.

Data from: Effects of the early Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event on ichthyosaur body size and faunal composition in the Southwest German Basin

The Early Jurassic Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event is considered one of the most dramatic environmental perturbations of the Mesozoic. An elevated extinction rate among marine invertebrates accompanied rapid environmental changes, but effects on large vertebrates are less understood. We examined changes in ichthyosaur body size in the Posidonia Shale of the Southwest German Basin spanning the extinction interval to assess how environmental changes and biotic crisis among prey species affected large reptiles. We report no species-level extinction among the ichthyosaurs coinciding with peak invertebrate extinction. Large ichthyosaurs were absent from the fauna during the extinction interval, but became more abundant in the immediate aftermath. Stenopterygius quadriscissus, the most abundant species during the extinction interval, increased in body size after the biotic event. Rapid invasion by large taxa occurred immediately following the extinction event at the end of the first ammonite zone of the early Toarcian. Greater mobility permitting exploitation of ephemeral resources and opportunistic feeding behavior may minimize the impacts of environmental change on large vertebrates.

Cross-modal matching of audio-visual German and French fluent speech in infancy

<p>The present study examined when and how the ability to cross-modally match audio-visual fluent speech develops in 4.5-, 6- and 12-month-old German-learning infants. In Experiment 1, 4.5- and 6-month-old infants’ audio-visual matching ability of native (German) and non-native (French) fluent speech was assessed by presenting auditory and visual speech information sequentially, that is, in the absence of temporal synchrony cues. The results showed that 4.5-month-old infants were capable of matching native as well as non-native audio and visual speech stimuli, whereas 6-month-olds perceived the audio-visual correspondence of native language stimuli only. This suggests that intersensory matching narrows for fluent speech between 4.5 and 6 months of age. In Experiment 2, auditory and visual speech information was presented simultaneously, therefore, providing temporal synchrony cues. Here, 6-month-olds were found to match native as well as non-native speech indicating facilitation of temporal synchrony cues on the intersensory perception of non-native fluent speech. Intriguingly, despite the fact that audio and visual stimuli cohered temporally, 12-month-olds matched the non-native language only. Results were discussed with regard to multisensory perceptual narrowing during the first year of life.</p>

Perception of valence and arousal in German emotion terms – A comparison between 9-year-old children and adults

<p>Two major semantic features of emotion concepts have been shown to impact performance in<br> emotion perception tasks: valence and arousal. To design psycholinguistic experiments with<br> emotion terms as stimuli, norms are required which indicate valence and arousal values for<br> individual words. Although such norms are usually obtained from ratings of adults, they are<br> often also used in developmental studies. This procedure raises the question of whether<br> children and adults perceive emotional valence and arousal of words in the same way, and<br> consequently, whether adults’ ratings are adequate when constructing stimulus sets for<br> children. The present study obtained valence and arousal ratings for 48 German emotion<br> terms from three different groups: 9-year-old children and adults tested in a controlled<br> laboratory setting, and adults tested via online survey. Results demonstrate high correlations<br> for valence and arousal across settings. The comparison between children and adults also<br> revealed high correlations, suggesting that children at the age of 9 already display adult-like<br> behavior in their evaluation of emotion terms. A small difference was found for absolute<br> rating values of arousal, with children rating words less arousing than adults. Overall, using<br> adults’ norms in developmental studies on word processing seems to be a valid procedure.</p>
